Wkd BO 0908-1017 - Beep beep, Reese. I- I- I- I- It floats. Oh , yes. It floats.

Was IT expecting a harsher drop friday, and less harsher drops sat and sun?

If Sat and Sun are down 50% that's still a $56m weekend which was estimated?

the moviepass user in me wants to see mother! now

the rest of me knows i probably won't like it and is fighting to keep the other part of me down

I think mother!'s wide release is going to be an absolute detriment to it.

The closest theater to me that has 7 screens and doesn't even play stuff that they advertise in the lobby (Logan Lucky...) has all day showings for whatever reason.

And this is the type of neighborhood that was selling out Suicide Squad every day.

The reaction to Mother! is pretty hilarious to watch.

nerd: Christ, what happened to originality in movies? All that's left these days is Marvel shit and sequel after sequel. What happened to the days when auteurs could release true pieces of cinema?

Aronofsky: Okay, here you go

nerd: jesus FUCK
I'm always kind of surprised that, when a movie is released that isn't similar to the marketing, the general reaction was audiences is vehement hatred. I can understand feeling like you've been "conned" of your money, but what weirds me out is most people don't even want to meet a film halfway and consider it on its own merits.

That applies to films that aren't even close to as weird as mother! The Witch was pretty hated for a similar reason too.

I’ll see anything with JLaw in it, but I almost always wait till February-March for Oscar Movies.

Man I don't even remember how The Witch was marketed. I just wish it did more for me beyond my awe of its historical authenticity.

People say they want "new" in movies, but in reality they just want the same old crap but without the brand names or 2 in the title. I love it when artists really get to freak people out with their shit.

This is why so many sports dramas get that A+ cinemascore rating. People go in expecting the beats that every sports drama has. People get the beats that every sports drama has. People leave happy.

I think it might be a consequence of who these misleading marketing campaigns are usually targeting. Most instances are tricking people who wanted a cheap horror film into seeing a art house flick. So you probably got teenagers and younger folks on dates, looking for something spooky and they get allegories and symbolism. It's just not the type of movie that they'd see under any circumstances. Once they realize they've been duped, they just shut down.

These people deserve The Mummy and Monster Trucks.

If nothing else, mother! seems like a film I would prefer to see by myself, at home.

I don't need the grumbles and general bad aura of a dissatisfied movie theater futzing with my experience.

The only Aronofsky movies I've seen so far are Pi, Requiem, and Fountain, and of those three Requiem is my favorite. I'll get around to watching Black Swan and The Wrestler one of these days.

I feel like watching in a theatre would be worth it for the "da FUCK is this?!" reactions and/or walkouts

Yeah, people really want the movie they believe they've been sold and nothing else most of the time. The Witch was a fascinating example. And I've been guilty of that in the past too. I think it's a derivative of the "oh wait this beloved movie classic that I just watched for the first time didn't change my life, wtf?" phenomenon. And we've all been there.

It's not just about misleading trailers though. Inglourious Basterds had misleading trailers (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qRYDNWXuip8), but I have never heard anyone complain about it.

It's misleading marketing combined with a film that is atypically paced and/or doesn't spell things out for the audience.

I promise you this is going to be a much different film experience at home (Unless your home literally has movie theater like levels of equipment)

A decent portion of why I loved this was because of how on edge and anxious every sound and camera movement or closeup shot on the big screen made me feel, especially as shit went south. My TV's nowhere near that big or loud

Sure. I mean it's always a case by case thing anyway.

But this also reminds me of Suicide Squad. I bet some WB execs got nervous really fast when they realized the movie Ayer was making had little to do (well, supposedly) with the Bohemian Rhapsody trailer that was so well received.

Get Out was another. Looked like a C horror film. Turned out to be nothing like it.

IB and Get Out are both crowd pleaser films at their core.

Witch, mother!, It comes are night are arthouse flicks, attempting to appeal to mass market with misleading marketing. Get Out did not spell out everything, but it was simply a much better script than the others. Managing to hit high culture at the same time of pop culture. A film that can be enjoyed on several levels, while the others can't be.

See it. Asap. And in a loud theater.

I want to see this, but
how much gore is there? I am not a huge fan of the torture porn type movies, but some graphic stuff doesn't bother me. I read some review that said it wasn't as bad as those kinds of movies so I think I would be alright.

And also, for most people not good.

This isn't a film where someone is "wrong" if they hate it. You don't get this kind of lashback and make an objectively great film.

This is safe, but still adding black bars.
There is gore, but no torture porn at all. The violence is quick and shocking, but it never lingers. You really never have time to adjust to it because when the violence occurs, the film is moving at a breakneck pace to the next wtf moment

Well that is sort of what I mean. I wasn't insinuating that audiences only like braindead/shallow films, but they do tend to want something with a straightfoward story. Get Out can be enjoyed on a surface level, even if there is more under the surface if you want to get into that. It wasn't Mulholland Drive.

Mulholland Drive is one of the few times I left the theater completely confused (it was also one of the emptiest theaters I've ever been in).

I mean, The Shining and The Thing had pretty mixed receptions when they released. Like "nominate The Shining for Razzies" dislike.

Not saying mother is on the same level as those films, but I think audience expectations and quality are not exactly correlated. Especially when a lot of people likely went into mother expecting a horror movie or a home invasion thriller or a Jennifer Lawrence psychological thriller or maybe something like Black Swan.

ok maybe i should see mother. i've avoided as much as possible (even trailers) so the suspense of what this movie is is killing me.

The less you know, the better. It isn't horror, it damn was I tense through almost the entire thing.
It will play very, very differently knowing what is coming on a second watch.

Yeah I'm not saying it's a bad movie, I haven't seen it.

But I always try to shy away from the whole "I like this and the masses don't. I must be the one who is right" mindset. I don't think you can classify mother! as an objectively good scale at large, because well a ton of people hate it. It doesn't even seem mixed it seems mostly out right disliked.

It seems he made a very strange, very niche appealing film a small group of people will like. Nothing wrong with that at all and I'm happy there's people that enjoy it. Hell I adore The Fountain and that had a mixed reception.

This just isn't a case I'm gonna blame the audience for not liking it. It doesn't seem remotely the type of film most people will enjoy.

I'm not looking at Mother! as "It's the children that are wrong." or anything. It is just one of those that will click hard with some people, and completely piss off everyone else. It's not for everyone. I don't have an issue with people hating it. I get it. For me, it hit all the right buttons.

Alternatively, and let me float this your way: Folks just want the goddamn thing thing they paid for. If you spend $15 and some change to go see a thriller, coming out of a satirical comedy is going to cheese you off.

You can swerve me on Netflix, Hulu, or Crunchyroll, since I'm paying a sub for a whole bunch of content. For $15, you better show me at least what the trailers promised.

Even IT may not be a horror movie, but folks paid to see a scary clown and the film delivers on that front.

I'm sitting in the theater 30 min before showtime (Cinemark usually starts on time) and not only is the theater completely empty, the projector is also off because presumably an hour ago this screening was gonna be empty. Usually by now they're already screening ads for local places.

Can't wait to watch mother! whenever I'm able. I even enjoyed Noah. Aronofsky will always be someone interesting to follow. It's just really stupid to pay J-Law $15 million for a movie like this.

I don't think the marketing for mother was that drastic. It Comes At Night was way worse; everything from the title to the poster to the trailer edits made the movie seem it was about something that it wasnt

Mother may not be a horror movie or a psychological thriller, but it does have horrifying imagery and is surreal and off-kilter and weird like the trailers and poster and odd name was hinting at

Like I know it happened but I find it hard to imagine someone watching the trailer for mother and then expecting a run-of-the-mill horror movie going in. They may expect a horror movie of some kind, and it's not really, but the trailer doesn't present the movie as a normal generic story

Edit: okay, maybe you're right. The Mother trailer sure is hilarious once you've seen the movie
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XpICoc65uh0

To be fair, the trailer isnt exactly lying. That aspect is still in the movie. But the trailer is like a candle illuminating a tiny corner of a painting and then seeing the movie lights up the entire canvas.

I saw mother. I don't know what I expected.

It looks like we might hit 1k posts this week. We were close last week as well. Last year, this weekend earned less than 200 posts.

I guess Jennifer Lawrence is going to disappear for a bit after X-Men. She mentioned in an interview that she doesn't have anything scheduled to film in the next two years.
