See it. Asap. And in a loud theater.the moviepass user in me wants to see mother! now
the rest of me knows i probably won't like it and is fighting to keep the other part of me down
I'm always kind of surprised that, when a movie is released that isn't similar to the marketing, the general reaction was audiences is vehement hatred. I can understand feeling like you've been "conned" of your money, but what weirds me out is most people don't even want to meet a film halfway and consider it on its own merits. The reaction to Mother! is pretty hilarious to watch.
nerd: Christ, what happened to originality in movies? All that's left these days is Marvel shit and sequel after sequel. What happened to the days when auteurs could release true pieces of cinema?
Aronofsky: Okay, here you go
nerd: jesus FUCK
Man I don't even remember how The Witch was marketed.
People say they want "new" in movies, but in reality they just want the same old crap but without the brand names or 2 in the title. I love it when artists really get to freak people out with their shit.I'm always kind of surprised that, when a movie is released that isn't similar to the marketing, the general reaction was audiences is vehement hatred. That applies to films that aren't even close to as weird as mother! The Witch was pretty hated for a similar reason too.
Oh, that's right! All I remember is the creepy goat. I never got around to seeing the film.

These people deserve The Mummy and Monster Trucks.I think it might be a consequence of who these misleading marketing campaigns are usually targeting. Most instances are tricking people who wanted a cheap horror film into seeing a art house flick. So you probably got teenagers and younger folks on dates, looking for something spooky and they get allegories and symbolism. It's just not the type of movie that they'd see under any circumstances. Once they realize they've been duped, they just shut down.
I feel like watching in a theatre would be worth it for the "da FUCK is this?!" reactions and/or walkoutsIf nothing else, mother! seems like a film I would prefer to see by myself, at home.
I don't need the grumbles and general bad aura of a dissatisfied movie theater futzing with my experience.

So you saw it? What did you think?I remember people being like "Looks like he ripped off Rosemary's Baby!"
nope
What are you doing in Gaf, Bobby?I haven't seen it, but it's absolutely not Rosemary's Baby in any way, shape, or form.
Yeah, people really want the movie they believe they've been sold and nothing else most of the time. The Witch was a fascinating example.

It's not just about misleading trailers though. Inglourious Basterds had misleading trailers (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qRYDNWXuip8), but I have never heard anyone complain about it.
It's misleading marketing combined with a film that is atypically paced and/or doesn't spell things out for the audience.

This is safe, but still adding black bars.I want to see this, buthow much gore is there? I am not a huge fan of the torture porn type movies, but some graphic stuff doesn't bother me. I read some review that said it wasn't as bad as those kinds of movies so I think I would be alright.
Witch, mother!, It comes are night are arthouse flicks, attempting to appeal to mass market with misleading marketing. Get Out did not spell out everything, but it was simply a much better script than the others. Managing to hit high culture at the same time of pop culture. A film that can be enjoyed on several levels, while the others can't be.
Well that sort of what I mean. I wasn't insinuating that audiences only like braindead/shallow films, but they do tend to want something with a straightfoward story. Get Out can be enjoyed on a surface level, even if there is more under the surface if you want to get into that. It wasn't Mulholland Drive.
I mean, The Shining and The Thing had pretty mixed receptions when they released. Like "nominate The Shining for Razzies" dislike. And also, for most people not good.
This isn't a film where someone is "wrong" if they hate it. You don't get this kind of lashback and make an objectively great film.

Not saying mother is on the same level as those films, but I think audience expectations and quality are not exactly correlated. Especially when a lot of people likely went into mother expecting a horror movie or a home invasion thriller or a Jennifer Lawrence psychological thriller or maybe something like Black Swan.
The less you know, the better. It isn't horror, it damn was I tense through almost the entire thing.ok maybe i should see mother. i've avoided as much as possible (even trailers) so the suspense of what this movie is is killing me.
Yeah, it's uneasy, disturbing, and has horrific imagery but it isn't a horror movieThe less you know, the better. It isn't horror, it damn was I tense through almost the entire thing.
It will play very, very differently knowing what is coming on a second watch.

Please post spoiler free impressions after in here. Then hit the spoiler thread.I'm sitting in the theater 30 min before showtime (Cinemark usually starts on time) and not only is the theater completely empty, the projector is also off because presumably an hour ago this screening was gonna be empty. Usually by now they're already screening ads for local places.
JLaw is really damn good in this too. Really damn good. Can't wait to watch mother! whenever I'm able. I even enjoyed Noah. Aronofsky will always be someone interesting to follow. It's just really stupid to pay J-Law $15 million for a movie like this.
I don't think the marketing for mother was that drastic. It Comes At Night was way worse; everything from the title to the poster to the trailer edits made the movie seem it was about something that it wasntAlternatively, and let me float this your way: Folks just want the goddamn thing thing they paid for. If you spend $15 and some change to go see a thriller, coming out of a satirical comedy is going to cheese you off.
