Videogame facts that blow your mind (SuperMarioBros. SHOCKING SECRET INSIDE p #70)

I've never been able to find confirmation for this nor have I talked to anyone else that seemed to get it, but to me, this was a clear cut case of a Peter North reference in Baldur's Gate 1 with a ridiculous level of freudian symbolism.

Baldr000.png

1) he's wielding a pole-arm
2) he's raising wyverns which have a long barbed (head) tail that spews poison (spewing is something p North is famous for)
3) he's in a cave (lewl)
4) he claims to be a woodsman and talks a lot about wood and the subtleties of having subterrenean wood (wood in cave)

Probably just standard innuendos...

He's in a cave. Really?

He even had a black front tooth for a while. I figure he bleached it, since lately his teeth look white enough. Maybe he just replaced it?

Since we're in the topic of Miyamoto.

So you know Starfox. Ever wonder why the protagonist is a Fox and that you fly through rings and arches. Turns out a Shrine is Kyoto quite near to Nintendo is dedicated to a Fox that can fly. So thats where the idea of a Fox flying through arches came from.

Citation: This documentary from 1993 (about 9 minutes in that video). Miyamoto himself says it.

Not got the time to research which shrine of which god it is.

If there any more facts in the documentary (so far we've seen the NOA gameplay councilors and how they QCed games using Children, even going so far as to have 2 way mirrors so they can spy on the kids to see their faces), I'll be sure to post them.

Sorry to ruin the thread again.

Also, Miyamoto makes a front flip on a kindergarden bar at 8.25 in that video!

I watched all parts and at the end there's a doll house simulator from Maxis that looks very much like a concept for The Sims. So the idea was there 7(!) years earlier.

BTW the mushroom sound effect cuts off the end of the flag pole music. Probably just to make it a shorter sound and make the arrangement less obvious.

Other than that, it's pretty much spot on.

May be old?

According to Kotaku, in the original Super Mario Bros instruction booklet, in the story, it says that koopa, (bowser) turned all of the Mushroom People, (toads) into bricks...

One day the kingdom of the peaceful mushroom people was invaded by the Koopa, a tribe of turtles famous for their black magic. The quiet, peace-loving Mushroom People were turned into mere stones, bricks and even field horsehair plants, and the Mushroom Kingdom fell into ruin.

The only one who can undo the magic spell on the Mushroom People and return them to their normal selves is the Princess Toadstool, the daughter of the Mushroom King. Unfortunately, she is presently in the hands of the great Koopa turtle king.

Mario, the hero of the story (maybe) hears about the Mushroom People's plight and sets out on a quest to free the Mushroom Princess from the evil Koopa and restore the fallen kingdom of the Mushroom People.

You are Mario! It's up to you to save the Mushroom People from the black magic of the Koopa!

So every time you jump and break a brick, you are actually killing toads?

Well, maybe the mushroom kingdom was filled with bricks anyway. They are fairly useful. Particularly bricks that can float.

I think that the blocks with coins are toads, but you don't kill those.

What's up with that?

Why doesn't he put eggs like every other pokemon? Maybe cause he is legendary (aka a mammal)?

I remember that.
Freaked me out when I was a kid.

I think they are referring to blocks that contain mushrooms, which implies that Mario actually consumes the lives of toads to gain extra lives himself or become larger (which also gives him more life). It seems like not only the Koopa tribe knows black magic.

Maybe Mario originally is from the Koopa tribe as well? o_O

I just saw a video of an easter egg in Harvest Moon: More Friends in Mineral Town I thought may interest a few people. I have no idea if this is in the US version (probably not), but according to the video (which demonstrates it), the TV holds secret messages, especially if you check it at 4:44 AM and 4:44 PM.

Midnight Channel, is that you?

Nintendo just revealed a new one about Super Mario Bros. 3 in volume 6 of the super play videos:

Tanooki Suit + Kuribo's Shoe = Total invincibility. Turn into a statue and drop into the shoe, and you keep the statue's invincibility while moving around with the shoe. As if Kuribo's Shoe wasn't awesome enough on its own.

As seen on GameTrailers.

Oh man, I was just playing Mario 3 when I wondered what would happen if I became a statue and fell into the shoe.

It works correctly in the Japanese version, but in the English version it locks up the game with a dialog box that opens and closes in an endless loop. I wrote about it when the GBA game came out (yes, typos and all... blah)

In Japanese culture, the number 4 is concidered bad luck. Sort of how those of us in the west concider the number 7 to be unlucky. In the Japanese version of the game if you watch tv at 4:44, the channel will display nothing but "4 HOUR 44 MINUTES" over and over again. After about 10 seconds it will stop automatically and you can continue playing.

The event is there in the English version too, but it's not converted correctly. You can watch the tv at 4:44, but instead of "4:44 4:44" flashing over the screen, your game will throw itself into a loop of opening and closing the dialog box. The only way to get out of it is to turn off your Gameboy and start from where you last saved.

You can tell if it is 4:44 by checking the clock in your farmhouse. You can buy the clock off of the Tv Shopping show on Saturdays.

not sure if it's been mentioned, but

the living Skyward Sword's head resembles the "phoenix'"s head on the Hylian Shield, with her wings as cape

coincidence? I think not. That, in turn, would also mean the Royal Crest is related to the sword

Intentional or not, in the background of the Options screen of Donkey Kong Country Returns there's a patch of coral that looks similar to the old Rareware logo.

Pics or it didn't happen. (I don't have access to the game right now)

A request: does anyone know the Swan Lake song that resembles Kefka's theme? We watched Black Swan and my brother swears they used Kefka's theme in the movie. I'm trying to explain to him that the Kefka music is probably inspired by Swan Lake
