Your Top 3 Shocking Moments in Videogames

I remember working out the Revan twist after a first person cutscene happened and the character talking to me called me Revan. After playing as my own character, why now would I suddenly be involved in a cutscene from Revan's POV. Then it clicked.
Yeah, I also think that's where it began to click for me as well.

1) that time Barve misgendered someone and had to do some pushups.

2) that time mary jane blamed everything on Peter parker, even though it was all about herself.

3) that time magic girl was impressed she had magic and could do magic now.

Truly some of the best writing we've ever had and i was truly shocked by how impactful and moving these moments were.
This post was brought to you by someone so brave.

- Assassins Creed 1: I bought the game only having watched commercials showing an assassin in the ancient middle East era. When I booted up the game and started seeing Matrix stuff I was like WTF. Loved the surprise, though. Also shocking when in Assassins Creed 2 I learnt the whole alien civilization plot.

- Expedition 33:
end of the ACT 2. I thought that was the actual end of the game. Oh, boy.

- The end E of Nier Automata. Shocking/amazing.

Expedition 33 has got to be of recent shocking moments.

1 - Bioshock 1's twist
2 - Kotor 1's twist
3 - Mass Effect 1's reveal

I think those spring to my mind on games of yesterday on twists I really liked in the early 2000s. Not been much that ever topped that feeling other than E33.

Prey (2017):
In the intro, when you break the windows in your apartment and figure out that you were part of an experiment. And then towards the end of the game, when it is revealed that you are actually not a human but a Typhon.
Was that for all endings? I finished 100% the game but didn't remembered it.

It's revealed in the post-credits sequence. That sequence changes a bit depending on your choices, but I think the reveal is universal.

If you nope out using the escape pod earlier you only get a little hint towards this sequence.

Deus Ex.

When you get captured by the bad guys, and escape from your prison cell only to discover that the prison is underneath the office that you work in.
You've been working for the bad guys all along!

Mind blown.

Zero Escape: 999 - all the endings, but expecially the ending ending.

Eternal Darkness - the first (and second, and third) time my sanity meter got low.

Halo CE - the Flood reveal.

And I'll echo the KOTOR/Pokemon G/S comments above. Great stuff.

Joel in TLOU2 take this one easily considering I chose to not play the game after getting spoiled.

Not sure shocking is the right word but Braid's ending was eerie.

Inside was special too.

I reeeeally enjoyed Scorn and the mind journey they push you through there, an unforgettable playthrough for me.

Again, shocking is not the right word but getting control over John in Red Dead Redemption 2 was a wuuut moment.

- Diablo 1 ending where you get gemmed in the forehead

- MW2 (old game). Mowing down people at the airport

- COD4. Getting nuked in that mission. You stumble around and drop dead

Chrono Trigger when Lucca goes back to the past to the day her mother loses her legs, I kind of remember the screen going black and her mother's scream when you fail to save her, that shocked me.

In Breath of Fire 2 back when I played it in SNES there's a point where you are forced to choose one character to sacrifice it to continue with the story. I remember entering every room to chat with every character and having tears while trying to decide which one to part with. Now I can't remember if I choose myself or if I chose Nina, the game in the end does not sacrifice anyone but being asked to choose one break my heart since I'd spent hours grinding and evolving the characters.

And two of them are in Labyrinth of Galleria but I count them as one since they are kind of related: In the first act you play as a girl named Eureka and ends when you find that a handmaiden had hung herself because of love issues and a secret past and just when there is an explosion and your character sacrifices herself to save her friend Nachi (who she actually never acted as her friend). You are led to think you got the bad ending and only after you start a new game you move onto the second act. And in the second act you control Nachi and story kind of repeats itself because you are in a kind of time loop but when you are supposed to find that the handmaiden had hung herself instead you find that Eureka had hung herself in a tree so that the cycle could be broken. That left me dumbfounded.

The ending to Dreamweb on the Commodore Amiga

You watch a guy get hit by a train, absorb his soul, and then swiftly get gunned down by the police in an alley way, then the credits roll

For me it's
1) KOTOR reveal
2) Mass Effect when you meet Sovereign and find out the origin of the Mass Relays
3) When you meet Ravel in Planescape: Torment and learn your past.

Aerith
MGS2
TLoU2

I think everyone knows what parts so I'm skipping spoilers for those who haven't experienced them

The End of the World of Warcraft Beta when Demons destroyed Stormwind
The condition of No Man Sky at release
The kill tutorial in Manhunt

Dead space 2 - eye

Eternal darkness - had several like the cockroach's on your TV and the save deletion gag.

1. Arith - I always thought she was coming back in some way.

2. Samus - I just played as a girl, that is cool.

3. Bioshock - Would you kindly, what a great reveal.

Bonus - The permaban of M ManaByte He earned it but it was a surprise.

In no certain order:

1) First day with N64. I don't remember being blown away by graphics quite as much when other new consoles launched.

2) The 2013 E3. I was dumbfounded that MS was really coming in higher price and lower specs. I went from planning to pre-order Xbox One (or whatever the code name was before official announcement) to pre-ordering PS4 instantly.

3) The rise of streamers. Never, ever in a million years did I expect an entirely new industry of people making millions by playing games on camera.

Chris Houlian's Room in Zelda ALTTP. It was so weird that I thought I dreamt it up only to find out it was real. I didn't know how to replicate it.

Terra's transformation in Final Fantasy VI, wasn't expecting that at all.

The house of horrors in Detroit - Become Human.

I think that's the great thing about Assassin's Creed, the fact that in these current and modern times, you have the technology to experience past eras or events, and you literally take control of a character involved in that era, makes it a great experience.

X-Men game (1993) - "Reset the computer"

God of War (2018) - Blades of Chaos

Metal Gear Solid 4 (2008) - Returning to Shadow Moses and the music kicks in

3. Half-Life 2: Episode 2 - Eli Vance's death

Just when you thought everything was over after closing the portal, this happens, to one of the pivotal characters in the game. The aftermath makes it shocking and grounded. The way he asks Alyx not to look is incredibly sad.

Also, the VA for Eli Vance, Robert Guillame passed away. R.I.P.

Don't mention or invoke Half-Life: Alyx spoilers here GAF! I know what your sticky hands on your keyboards are itching to type regarding Eli!

2. MGS2 - Arsenal Gear revelation by Ocelot that the whole Plant chapter, and the introduction of Raiden, are simulation of Solid Snake and his mission at Shadow Moses, from the first game.

The whole AI going haywire, breaking the 4TH wall was just the tip of the iceberg. This entire game being The Patriots' exercise to create and manipulate soldiers on par with Snake, at will, to create context, and shape the future of warfare and history as they see fit, depriving humanity of free will, is some wild shit Kojima AI doomsday theory I did not expect, since T2: Judgement Day and The Matrix.

1. Silent Hill - Lisa Garland's death

Self-explanatory, really.

One of the most saddest scenes in video game history, for one of the most tragic charactere ever written.

All the exchanges with Lisa took on a new meaning and sadness in subsequent playthroughs of the game for me. I just felt so awful for her.

Halo CE - the Flood reveal.

Yeah I forgot how shocking the Flood reveal was first time through Halo CE. There was no coverage except for the Covenant despite it being the actual existential threat in universe. Underrated pick.

Chrono Cross -
The mid-game switch to playing in the body of Lynx. Didn't see that coming whatsoever.

SMT: Nocturne -
In hindsight, the game gives plenty of hints/warnings about taking the actions which will cause the 'True Demon' ending, but those actions also involve completing an optional dungeon - and I am a completionist. Still, I wasn't prepared for the extremity and finality of that ending.

Tales of Symphonia -
Everything starts out in typical JRPG fashion, but then goes real dark, real fast. The standout was what becoming an 'angel' really means for Colette - just seeing her deterioration and having to continue the journey despite my initial misgivings slowly turning to dread. There's other stuff too - Krato's true identity, Presea and her father, and the human ranches. I'm still playing throught it too so I'm expecting more twists and turns although I'm not sure if they'll top the ones I've already experienced.

Baten Kaitos

At around the half-way point of the game, you find out that the protagonist (Kalas) has been working with the game's villain since the very beginning. You don't actually play as the protagonist in this game, but as the Guardian Spirit who lives inside Kalas. But you are so intrinsically connected to him in the game that there might not be any distinction at all... until this point. Kalas is actually his own character with his own motivations, he's not driven by you, the player. You are just his Guardian Spirit, and that's really driven home at this point.

At this point he even removes you (the Guardian Spirit) from himself. Your party members are scattered. You switch protagonist for a while. Pretty cool!
