XCOM 2: War of the Chosen |OT| Mario + Rabbids + Autopsies

Anything to know in advance about the ps4 version regarding glitches and feature differences from the pc version?

Intend to start the base game on Tuesday and but WotC if it runs satisfactorily

Not too concerned about the rest of the dlc
 
I kinda lost all interest in War of the Chosen after killing all the Chosen for some reason. They were so annoying I was glad to be rid of them but I've felt no real desire to play more. I think the game has too many fuck you RNG elements now to the point where I'm save-scumming most missions because things can just snowball so badly, so quickly. I feel like there's practically no daylight between ambushing a pod and wiping it out easily or accidentally triggering one and everything going straight to hell immediately in the second half of the game, with how dangerous some enemies are. There was some talk of the pod system earlier and I agree it's just not a great system anymore. I don't know what the solution is because I'm not a game designer.
 
For XCOM 3 Firaxis needs to work on the fog of war and displaying verticality on buildings better, as well as navigating it. Had a mission in one of the new Lost zones where the entire first half of the map was a building and the LOS and everything was all kinds of messed up, and it was really impossible to navigate.

On PS4 it still runs like ass. On top of that, I've had the game crash mid-mission and it corrupt the save data so I lost my save. Had to download the save from the cloud and lost hours of progress. So yeah.

I like the idea of the pod system and ambushes but they really need to fix the LOS issues. I moved a guy into the center of a building's roof, far away from all the edges, and a pod somehow saw that guy through a bus and activated. It's very inconsistent.

The best bandaid is the Tactical Analysis faction card you can get, which makes it so pods only get one action if you discover them on your turn. It's not a fix by any means, but it does lessen the damage an accidental activation does to your party.
 
I'm a little unclear, the chosen gathering intel on you, does it lead to a base defense mission or another failure state like the avatar project?
 
Suddenly the game seems to have started crashing on me ("XCOM 2 has encountered a problem...") - it's happened on two separate missions now, each time when using the ranger's slash attack. Hopefully this doesn't become a persistent problem...
 
I've yet to experience the Chosen base defense mission due to it being so remarkably easy to stop them from even making an attempt through covert ops.

You basically have to be prioritizing other covert ops (and let's be honest - most of them aren't going to outweigh stopping the aliens from shooting down the Avenger) over defense to ever get that mission to trigger.

Maybe in my next run I'll actually see what it's like... maybe...
 
Man, I wish Firaxis would fix the controller bug when selecting certain customization options for your soldiers. It's really annoying.

Judging from their recent releases, it feels like Firaxis takes a long time between each bug fix patch.
 
i can't even work out if they implemented control functionality to check stats before sending dudes out on covert missions. I can see the button to click on but since you can't hotswap between controller/mouse without backing out to main menu that doesn't do me any good.

I should probably just install more mods.

I had a weird thing yesterday where I moved my Reaper next to a container. A Lost Brute in that container was seen for half a second as I moved next to it and saw my troops through the wall at the same time.

This revealed my troops, but not the reaper, and I wasn't in concealment anymore.

I think if you start with The Lost and Abandoned the Assassin will always have Shadowstep and be vulnerable to reapers, and the others will also have one standard set of strengths and weaknesses they will have, but the other weakness and strength will be random. If you uncheck Lost and Abandoned they will be completely random

It really is. My girlfriend adores Xcom and is having a rough time with it. Load times and the pauses at the ends of turns are getting longer as she gets further in as well. It seems no ones talking about it either so the likelihood of fixes is slim :(
 
Sitrep Horde missions are definitely my favorite kind of mission.

Just had a Guerilla Ops with the Horde Sitrep where the spawn glitched and so my entire squad all started on the same square right next to the computer we needed to hack. It made it super fun because basically all the Lost started right around the building and it turned it from "go from point A to point B and exterminate zombies" to a mini tower-defense game with zombies crawling through all the windows and me having to desperately count shots.

Sometimes XCOM bugs are bad, but sometimes they're great.

I let the Assassin get all the way to max on my first (and now defunct) Commander Ironman mission as it was my first time playing the expansion and wanted to see what would happen. Spoilered just in case people want to be surprised:
It's essentially a twist on the regular Avenger Defense where the UFO shoots you down, except you have to destroy a giant cannon that's shooting the Avenger. If the Avenger's health gets to 0 it's game over, just like if an alien gets to your ship in the alien defense. And of course whatever Chosen initiated the attack shows up to make your life miserable too.

Getting Brittle (weak to close-range attacks) + Weak to Templars on the Assassin = fun times.
 
The first chosen is always weak to your starting hero. The second chosen always weak to your second hero and same with the third. All else is random.
 
the lost becoming a complete non-factor by midgame is kinda odd.

it was said before earlier in the thread but it's kind of odd how heavily it accentuates the difficult curve issue where early-to-mid is a grindfest but once you have a few options under your belt you can basically cruise to the finish line

I think it's odd they didn't tie, say, permanent dark events to avatar progress or something. The avatar progress victory meter thing is a really weird mechanic tbh.
 
Restarted Ironman on Veteran after Chosen kept killing everyone on Commander.

Only had one death until a single robot dude killed 3 guys in 2 turns in the first Avatar Project Facility. Apparently it's a super bad idea to have two snipers at the same place on the roof of the building, because of the robot AoE and the fall damage. Didn't help that I had no time to react after accidentally triggering them with my last dude with actions trying to move into place to shoot a turret.

And very next turn same robot had to rub salt into the wound with a one hit crit. Crazy how even on normal mode things can really go bad quick if you're not careful.
 
I think I've figured out why my game keeps crashing. Whatever optimization (or lack thereof) they did on PS4, it just cannot handle having my XCOM squad, Advent, a Chosen, and Lost all on the map at the same time. The game chugs and chugs whenever I have a mission with all three enemy types, and hangs stupidly long. All my crashes have been in this scenario. Regular PS4, btw. Think I'll just avoid those types of missions as much as possible to keep my save integrity.

Speaking of broken shit, a Templar with Bladestorm is ridiculous. Send him into a crowd of Lost, have him Parry, and watch him cut down everything and block any Brutes that show up. Put a Mindshield on him and send him after the Warlock - Warlock will keep trying to Mind Control him and fail, then run away and get hacked up. Templars are definitely my favorite of the special classes by far.
 
clowning on the warlock is just... excellent.

mine has planeswalker so every time I even nick him he fucks off somewhere and between him summoning mechs, knocking out half my squad but not actually damaging them, and occasionally mind controlling someone he's actually kind of fun to fight. Even though I just completely obliterate him half the time.

i really should wrap this campaign but between injury time, fatigue time and whatnot i just keep doing trivial bullshit. I really should do this vial mission.

Good one. I think I will have to go after him soon, considering how he's come pretty close to fucking up my squad the last two encounters.

The game forces certain weapon upgrades with late-game Lost missions, as Superior Magazine becomes a necessity. The game regularly spawns eight Lost in a single pod on Commander.
 
I may have made the most basic fuckup of spending too much time getting upgrades and fighting the Chosen before even starting to deal with the Avatar project. I'm two squares from completion and I haven't even established contact with an area that has a base.

Does rescuing soldiers or attacking Chosen strongholds set back the Avatar project?

The Lost are an interesting enemy idea, but don't allow for much variable play. They become irrelevant once magazine sizes and aim stacking become central to your squads, and the Lost don't keep pace mechanically.

Only black sites, facilities, and Covert operations that specifically reduce the timer will do anything to stymie the Project.

Advancing the main path also helps. Using the skulljack on an officer or codex (or specifically, killing the avatar that spawns after using the skulljack on a codex) during the main path will reduce the progress of the Avatar Project.

The pistol is useless against the Lost unless it's fully maxed because of its low damage. The only time when my sniper was effective against them was when I took out the Hunter and used his pistol instead.

Do some of the story missions, like skullmining the officer and the blacksite facility.

Alternatively, do the Ops that delay the Avatar, or research the facility leads -- which will let you attack the facility without making contact.

Yeah, even with my pistol rebalance mod, pistols don't have enough damage output to be viable against the Lost later on without DOT ammo.
 
Expected much worse from the PS4 version, a couple of hours in. Would be nice if the load times were better of course, and the pausing after every kill is annoying, but the framerate has been okay so far. Yet to run into a progress-impeding bug too, though its very early.

Basically wiped in the first proper mission because I made a bollocks of the ambush mechanic, tried it from too far away so missed all the overwatch shots, then wasn't prepared for the reinforcements when I hacked the device before killing the enemies.

Would you guys recommend putting more time into the base game, or would it be okay to buy WotC and jump straight into it?

Also can you get around Ironman glitches by uploading your saves on PS+? Don't wanna play Ironman if I can get glitched out of an entire campaign, but would like to remove the option for me to reload after mistakes since I can't help myself sometimes.

the card absolutely trivialises the lost. One of my sniper has about 110 kills.

I wish they seperated out lost kills
 
I can't bring myself to finish the game. I maxed out everything, took out all the rulers and chosen, and I'm just running missions to see if I get any new mission types. Even Very Difficult missions are a cakewalk now.

Are there specific mission types with WotC, like the Newfoundland one from XCOM: EW?

The Expedition rescue ones, where the resistance contact has the auto-turret, the missions where you fulton the supplies, the covert action ambushes, prisoner rescues, execute high ranking officers, destroy psi transmitters, the haven sieges with the resistance soldiers that do stuff, and the Chosen lair stuff, at the very least.

Unless you're talking strictly about one-off missions, then there's just Lost and Abandoned, plus the Chosen lair missions.
 
Holy bajeezus, today's challenge is PURE EVIL!

Sure, you get 8 soldiers, but they're all low-ranking specialists with weak hack scores, Gremlin Mark IIs, and ballistic weapons up against heavy MECs and THREE bloody sectopods!

You literally have no choice but to gamble with domination haywire protocols to get through the mission at all, as in the mission is literally impossible to complete without hacking - hence why only the top 5 scores right now have a mission completion bonus! It's bonkers-insane scenario design that just reeks of sadism. If you get lucky and get those early mind controls, the mission is beatable. If not, your only hope is to complete the objective and then watch all your soldiers die after you run out of grenades and combat protocols, because those ballistics are completely useless (aside from the ONE soldier who has bluescreen rounds - just the ONE.)

I literally only managed to snake my way into the top 5 through an incredibly lucky last-round domination hack. Literally only had ONE soldier left and she was surrounded by two heavy MECs and the sectopod, and that sectopod was what let me actually finish the mission. I'll admit, it was quite the thrill when that hack went through, but all the same - I would really, truly prefer that Firaxis move away from these kinds of gambling scenarios where the only solution is to bet on something with significantly low odds of success.

Oh god, I may need to restart my current mission. I fucked up bad and aggroed two of those shadow guys at the same time (was stealth-killing one pod and the remaining shadow guy scurried to join another pod), then the sniper Chosen came in. I ended up needing to fight a mech, the chosen, and two shadow guys at the same time when the only one I had faced before was the mech.

And then one of the shadow guys made a clone of my Templar, and the Templar freeze-naded a bunch of my guys, and basically showed me what a Templar can do since this was my first mission fielding a Templar, too.

Yeah I might need to restart this mission.

It's either that, or force an evac right away, or eat the team wipe. The wipe would be nearly campaign ending because it would cost me a Reaper, a Templar, and my only Spark.

In the future, pop a flashbang when you're engaging the Spectres. It actually works on them, and prevents Shadowbound.

Also works on Codecs too.
 
So I'm in the middle of an Ironman game and it seems like there's a bug that's preventing me from contacting new regions. I have more than enough open contacts, tons of intel, and I have contacted regions connected to them. There isn't something else that can lock down every single region from being contacted, is there? Otherwise I'm kinda boned.
 
Can anybody tell me where to find the Archon King? I just want to get the "Enemy Adopted" and "Now I am the master" achievements before I move on towards ending the campaign.
