I feel for ya. I will make it my mission to try and get you one without having to use a scalper. Anyone else willing to help? I'll pay the shipping and handling fees myself!

If I can swing by Best Buy, I'll try and get some for you guys. It's about a 30 minute drive so no promises.

Got mine this morning from Nintendo UK. Love this little baby and holding the controller just zaps you right back to the 90s.

Played a few games quickly and love it. It's a pity it can't be Fullscreen but I'm not complaining. Hours of fun to be had.

I knew I wasn't wrong to preorder at so many different locations. Amazon US hasn't shipped mine even though I preordered as soon as they went up. Customer service is being unusually unhelpful too.

Since I keep seeing this pop up..

hit down and select while in any game to return to the dashboard

Now you don't need the reset button :)

4:3/CRT should be 896x672.

Pity there's no pixel perfect with scanlines-mode.

You were right to point out my math error, but you would be looking at 960x672 (48/3 = 16 pixels of vertical overscall cropped from the original 256x240 signal, which actually is just black bars on the original full signal. Many often call this 256x224)

It is running the game windows at either 768x672 in a 720p signal with overscan cropped off (Pixel Perfect) or or 1024x672 in a 720p signal with overscan cropped off (4:3).

Most games were designed with 4:3 aspect in mind, with exceptions. Most noticeably many of the objects in Super Mario World look "correct" (squares and circles) when displaying at 1:1 Pixel Aspect Ratio.

The problem with displaying 4:3 at a 720p is that it doesn't offer enough pixels to smoothly stretch the horizontal axis resulting in uneven, noticeable artifacts. There can also be shimmer present when scrolling. Bilinear filtering can help reduce this but introduces visible blurring which is why pixel perfect exists for the most part. It is the original signal so is very sharp and artifact free.

For a 720p signal, the options presented are a good compromise. I have little doubt that the hardware they included could have easily been made to output to 1080p but it introduces a lot of options the end user would have to choose from, and overall a less obvious path towards displaying the image. For example, a pixel perfect image would occupy a much smaller portion of the screen.

Their goal here is clearly a plug and play setup without the hassle many struggle with in emulators on PC.

CRT would not be a good option for this console.
I appreciate your detailed post, but I meant the CRT filter in game.

That does nothing. It was a shortcut that hakchi can add, but the SNES Mini isn't hackable quite yet.

Ah okay - thanks for the clarification!

Touche. The CRT filter is a very valid choice!
Sorry if I wasn't clear enough ;)

On another note, I'm playing FF3 atm and every time I level up my characters' stats aren't changing. Im still at the beginning mostly with Edgar, Locke and Terra. Is this normal? Their levels are 9, 8 and 7.

It's the stats I see in under status in the menu. They remain unchanged. Only their HP increase. But in battle I can see their attacks are better. Is it possible to see these stats increases at all?

What pad is that? Because down+select is not a combination that works with the stock pads, but your pad could be sending the "Home" signal when pressing that combo, which works.

It's some Yok wireless controller. Got it for 20 bucks at GameStop since the cables on the default controllers is only like 5 feet.

Did I accidentally make a fantastic purchase?!

Edit: just tried my normal controller. Didn't work out. So, it appears to be related to the wireless controller I bought. Sorry to anyone I misled! I had no intentions to. :(

I really hope the mod community finds a way to fix the disappearing layers in Yoshi’s Island whenever you touch a fuzzy. God that shit is so annoying, I just can’t unsee it!

That has to be a record for preparing a serving of crow. Now on to the nudalities!
LOL. My only intention was to clear my name, I had no idea it was related to the controller I had rather than just a system-wide thing. My mind is boggled that there's no better default option.

Is it difficult for you to think I grew up playing games? Or that I don't play as much now due to not having time but I still buy them?

Yes I am glad they are making these systems that makes it easy to play them in good, simple configurations. I bought a framemeister and lots of cables for RGB hookups and the resulting image on TV could be great but it was also a hassle to doing the wiring, to get the right setting in the framemeister, and it was costly to get someone to mode the retro game systems to output RGB,S-video, etc. Not to even mention the framemeister and all other associated accessories/cables cost a ton as well.

So we should all be glad Nintendo is producing these classic minis. And if they make an N64 classic with Golden Eye packed in....oh man.

I just thought it is funny that you are glad that Nintendo made classic gaming accessible, and then you buy literal stacks of systems so that people can not access this thing you are happy people can access.

It's a good way to make money, just feels like quite a middle finger to people who want to play these classics. If you were just in it for cash I'd not have thought twice, but claiming you love that people can get this then clearing out the inventory of stores feels a bit... counterintuitive.

My Walmart order that is supposedly arriving on Tuesday still hasn't gotten past processing or charged my card.

Anyone still want to say that it's impossible for a tiny company like Walmart to ship to its stores and to its customers at the same time?

Do you know why the manual says to unplug it though? Specifically:

Pretty much every piece of electronic equipment ever says to unplug it when not in use in the safety manual. That's why I laughed, because I imagine that only people who grew up after elaborate instruction manuals were no longer a thing would find it worrisome.

You don't actually have to unplug it.

Anyone playing this on a large 4K TV? How good does it look? I know about the upscaling advantage of 720p to 4K vs 1080, and I'd like to read first hand impressions.

I'm playing it on a 55" 4K TV and sitting really close due to the controller cables. It looks great. I use the CRT filter.

The CRT filter is much better on this than on the NES Mini. Enabled it for Final Fantasy III and everything has a slight roundness and blending to it, no longer harsh pixels. Highly recommended.

Yeah, there's definitely a softness that's turned on with it. Very convincing, IMO.

Indianapolis is completely sold out. I got screwed yesterday morning at Best Buy in Avon,Indiana(suburb of Indy). Got there at 6:30, waited until 7:15 when they handed out tickets. Was ticket #12 of 14 in line, and they had like 47 systems. Right after they gave us the tickets, they said that we had to stay there, in line, until the store opened at 10. If we left for any reason at all, even just to wait in our cars, we'd forfeit our system. I work for the Avon school district, and there are young minds who's development depends on my being at work at 7:30, so I questioned them on it, saying it's never been like that in the past. They held firm, claiming it was corporate policy, which is clearly is not. As of such, they made me give my ticket back.

A coworker and friend at the school district also works part time at that store. I told him about it, and he went over at lunch to see what happened. They admitted to him that they lied about that, going against corporates' directions on how to do the ticketing, because they didn't want people taking the tickets to another store.

By the time I got my lunch break, Target, Wal-Mart, Meijer, and Gamestop were all sold out in the entire greater Indy area. I'm so upset about it, because I had a freaking ticket in my hand. It should've been mine, had they followed company policy and not gone rogue.

I complained to corporate, but all I got back was a, "we're sorry this happened and will use this info to assess how we can better do rollouts in the future" response, which is just a spit in the face.
