Speaking of Earthbound tho, I noticed today that the manual available on the Nintendo side is the actualy giant book that came with the game originally. That PDF is like 10x the sizes of all the other manuals haha

Indeed, they put it up when they first put the game on VC.

When I was a kid the only RPGs I played on SNES were Final Fantasy 2/4, 3/6, and Chrono Trigger. I never played Secret of Mana, Earthbound, or Super Mario RPG.

Of those, which do you think still holds up best today for someone who has no nostalgia attached to them?

Earthbound >>>>>> Super Mario RPG >>>> Secret of Mana

Earthbound. Replaying Mario RPG and.... The gameplay is still great, but that translation is pretty awful. I should say editing more like... The editing is awful.

Shenanigans.
I'm playing through Mario RPG again now, and while it is a bit over-the-top at the beginning with the "Wow, look, it's MARIO!," it's still a great game.

So it looks like you can order a SNES Classic from shopko.com but it's $89.99 and you don't get free shipping until you spend at least $99.99.

I don't know. I feel like it's paying a scalper fee.

Again, the gameplay is still great, but the translation/editing is early ps1 tier bad. Mistranslated item and character names, lots of grammar mistakes, and character actions not matching what's being spoken.

It's worth a play definitely, but Earthbound holds up far better as a stand alone title.

Cool, Earthbound it is.

How do you all think Earthbound stacks up these days to Final Fantasy 4, 6, and Chrono Trigger?

I'd still take 6 and CT to Earthbound, but that's very unfair to Earthbound.

Back to Mario RPG... It's also super weird in characterization... Like finding Peach's vibrator, and the scene where Mario goes to punch a small child and has to be held back by one of the party members...

It depends. I think Earthbound is terrible (tedious, poor battle system/mechanics, user-unfriendly, etc.), but I think FF4/6 and CT are all some of the best rpgs ever (FF6/CT being #s 1 & 2). But, others think Earthbound is great for some reason, so i'd say it's best for you to just try it out yourself.

Personally, I think where Earthbound ranks among the SNES jrpgs comes down to personal taste. All the heavy hitters are some of the best games ever. I rank Chrono Trigger, FFVI, Super Mario RPG, and Secret of Mana all above Earthbound, but I wouldn't argue with anyone that thinks Earthbound is better. They all just kind of sit on the top shelf in the same spot.

Ah, I guess it never bothered me all that much.
Earthbound is decidedly better, of course, but nonetheless.

I'd rank Earthbound as better than any game (of any genre for any platform) other than Chrono Trigger.

I’m gonna give earthbound one last try on the SNES classic. Tried playing it twice on 3DS and ... I just don’t get it. Way too grindy and obtuse at times. Battles kinda boring. Maybe it’s just not for me.

But I love RPGs and feel like I should love it. One final try.

I love FFIV but I'd take EarthBound over it no doubt.

Chrono Trigger and FFVI are two of my all-time faves and while EarthBound is on that list, I wouldn't ever put it above those. But there is no experience like EarthBound and all things considered it has aged very well. It's an absolute must for fans of the genre, especially fans of the genre's 16-bit era.

While I think the game is great the whole way through, one sticking point - item management - gets significantly better after you get your second party member.
And the rolling HP/PP meters are more of a benefit as you gain more of them as well.

Plus the insta-win battles, of course.
With those, it never felt "grindy" to me.

Damn, the slowdown on the overhead stages in Contra is brutal in 2 player mode. Was it always this bad? I must've not been bothered about it when I was younger but wow, it's barely playable at times.

It's always been like that.

However the EU version had less slowdown as a result of the game itself running slower than the US version, due to 50hz conversion. Since European games ran at 50fps at the time, they put less strain on the processor than the games originally demanded and were less prone to slowdown. You saw it with a lot of PAL SNES games when compared to the US ones.

The US versions were hugely preferable in every other area though.

I've tried so many times and I don't like it either.

I can't wait to hear news on restock!

So I was gonna start playing one of the RPG's but considering the news we will be able to add more games in a week and not knowing what that'll do to save files I guess I'll wait.

I feel exactly the same. I'm going to play my favorites first, but I'll give it this one last shot, haha.

Did yours gets shipped Fedex Ground or Smartpost?

I consider Earthbound the best SNES RPG. It's actually the only one of the three that feels like it gets better with age (some of that comes from the player getting older). It's a wonderful game.

Oh, didn't realize that, sorry.
Not sure, but I would guess it's the more recent version then.
Mea culpa.

No worries, did a double check. The vanish+doom bug is in both versions. I think the Relm glitch was the only major bug fixed in 1.1. I've been waiting till I beat Mario RPG before I play FF3, and Relm is almost to the half way point so I can't do a quick check.

The level I tried was easy but that penguin boss was just cheap.

Edit

My hand wishes I read this yesterday.
Efficiently dashing makes the game a whole lot easier, otherwise it plays almost like OG megaman which is pretty tricky against the bosses in this game. Try it out with the controller change and if you're still having trouble with the boss go to other levels and see if you can find any power ups to help out.

I was wall jumping up to avoid him and his attacks then sliding down and hitting him but I was hardly doing any damage. Eventually he'd get me.

One thing that will help is you can dash off a wall to the other side of the room. See if that helps with staying away from him. Also make sure to have your thumb on shooting when you aren't doing it so you're always charging.

Yeah, that's my current situation as well - currently playing through Mario RPG before moving on to FF3(6). Although FF3(6) just came up on my Attract Mode demo, and then came up again right after it, making me want to play it. Darn there are so many amazing games on this thing.

There were two versions of FF3US. 1.0 had the Relm glitch, but 1.1 fixed it. I can't remember if the vanish+doom was in both versions or if it too was fixed.

Correct.

Vanish / Doom was not fixed with 1.1 because it was based on the magic evade stat being ignored.

btw: how do you rewind?
and is there a way to reset the game with the controller?

Reset the system. Go to the save state. Press X. At any point during the rewind you want to continue on from that point, press start.

No you have to reset from the console unless you have a Wii Classic Controller with a HOME button.

Or an 8bitdo /retro receiver wireless combo. Down + select.

I know I’ve been a broken record, but every time I post this someone new discovers it and says thanks. Hopefully it’s not too annoying.

Having a blast with F-Zero tonight. Tomorrow I plan to start a playthrough of a longer game... debating between replaying an old favorite or starting one that I didn't play before...

Just ordered a reproduction earthbound players guide to help me through trying to play the game / giving it one last shot to hook me.

If Vanish-Doom is fixed in FF6 then I'm in trouble, haha.

We started playing Contra for the first time today. Playing on easy after several attempts we barely managed to beat stage 1. Game is as brutal as advertised. Am I understanding correctly that you must beat the entire game in 3 continues and 7 rests (potentially getting a couple more rests along the way) with no checkpoints or saves to restart?

If so, that's insane and I will indeed have to resort to making a save state if I finish stage 1 with lots of rests left. :p I wonder how many stages there are. I had no idea Contra had the crazy awkward top-down shooter rotating section that I promptly ran into.

Also, what's the difference between 2 player A and 2 player B?

Goddamn does Secret of Mana's music get repetitive and loud.

How far did you get last time you tried? Did you get to your second party member?

I think I got to the 4th town maybe. I was making good progress and was enjoying it more....but then I stepped away and never came back.

Is there any way to practice on the fire field track in fzero? Only the knight tracks seem to be available...
