This graph is VERY alarming --- what's strange is that gun technology hasn't gotten THAT much better over the past 10-20 years..............so what has changed? Why are things ramping up almost exponentially in recent years? There hasn't been this amazing leap in gun tech, right?
I honestly think it's to do with media coverage of shootings/terrorist attacks.
Watch this video with a forensic psychiatrist who says that the way the media covers these events actually propagates more shootings to occur https://youtu.be/PezlFNTGWv4

Wow, woke up to this news with a notification from USA Today and just upset me to the max. Going to a concert and thinking nothing to either fearing for your life or even losing it is just so heartbreaking.

Does anyone think this guy got inspired by the shooting in the UK? Especially with how easy it is to target crowds of people.

Are you thinking of the attack at the Bataclan in Paris? The attacks in the UK haven't been shootings.

I’m not saying it’s impossible but it’s highly unlikely. We know there is data out there. The problem is that the way our government is set up, and the way the Bill of Rights is so highly revered, it would be next to impossible to change on a huge basis. To make an amendment that changed or nullified the 2nd amendment, it would take 2/3 states to ratify (never mind Congress passing and the President supporting it). I can name, off the top of my head, probably 30-35 states that would absolutely oppose that, with maybe, MAYBE five of those being able to be swayed to supporting it. That’s still over 50% opposed so it wouldn’t pass.

Add to that, the US SC has time and again said that the second amendment is fine and they support how it has been interpreted recently. So now not only does it have precedence, if any case were brought up to the SC any time soon, the current Justices are favoring conservatives so they’d likely just uphold it again.

What I don't understand is how this makes any difference to other western countries. If I understand it correctly, USA already has some rules around who can own what guns. You can't tell me that anyone in any state can buy whatever gun they want - you guys have rules already.

This is fundamentally the same as UK and Australia. The difference is where the boundaries are in which guns are available and who can own them. Stop any talk of changing the constitution or banning guns wholesale. Instead look at what other western nations do and consider adopting some of the less contentious laws.

For instance - if you own a gun, you have to own a locker to keep it in. A pretty low bar to ownership, but it begins to reduce some of the outliers of gun deaths. Reduces some accidental discharges, reduces some theft. Think small and work your way up.

50 now.

Something has to happen.

It won't. Or are we quickly forgetting about Sandy Hook? I mean, kids were killed. Kids. And you know what happened....? Nothing. The silence that day and the weeks after told me right then and there where the government stands on gun control. So as horrific and terrifying as this was....nothing will come of this.

Early this morning the death count was at 2 with 20+ injured and I thought that was insanely high, I don't even know how to process the current number of casualties.

This is horrible 😨

Nope. No point in shutting the gate if the horse has already bolted.

If the death of 20 young kids in Sandy Hook didnt do it, nothing will.
Sure, it would absolutely be worth to START shutting the gate - even if it will take an insanely long time to get those horses back in. Not this generation, not the next one or even the one after that ... but at some point future generations would be better off.

But yeah, the resistance by gun fanatics in the US at this point in time will not even allow for this start.

What a shocking day, terrible thing to happen, the fact that someone can, legally, have 8 assault rifles and 1000's of rounds of ammunition, I find mind boggling.

Watch politicians talk about banning open air events rather than even introducing mild gun laws. It's absolutely insane.

Doesn't sound well regulated if he can just get them on loan.

The person has to physically be there supervising and they are responsible for everything and anything to do with that regulated firearm. The NFA is very successful, and the ATF does not fuck around when it comes to enforcing it. People should look to that framework for successful gun control measures in the U.S.

I dont see why people are talking about Gun control like you expect this president and it's administration to actually do something.

Trump will probably sign and EO declaring open carry for all states or some shit.
He had that idea about gun laws and permits from other states working in any state you go to.

I have already seen one tweet with a picture of black man as the terrorist.
Yeah and another said a guy with an Afro was seen shooting.
The social media bot machinery is working overtime widened any existing cracks, by creating click bait designed for retweets. Some stupid bit of divisive garbage retweeted 400 times can hit 40,000 time-lines.

and that was during the obama administration

now we have....this. 110% nothing will be changed

The GOP answer to this will legitimately be that there should have been more good people with guns to stop this from happening.

And that kind of gun control would prevent or reduce the amount of death or injuries in these kind of cases

and that is all that matters at this stage. it isn't about a magical instant fix, it's about progress. existing owners of machine guns should be forced to hand them in to be destroyed. they're licensed so they know who does and does not own them. fine them if they don't comply. even limiting gun ownership to side arms would greatly reduce the death tolls in these sorts of attacks. then in a couple years reduce further, ban side arms too, lets see someone kill 50 people with a knife.

You took a giant leap from gun control to nullifying the second amendment. There are literally dozens of things we can do right now that don't require changing the constitution. These things would have an immediate effect on gun violence.

What I think it boils down to was the situation. The assailant was shooting far away with cover, at a very large crowd that couldn't spread out quickly, and at the time of the shooting people couldn't easily tell where the assailant was shooting from.

What I want to know is why the sicko wanted to do this. Hopefully that other suspect turns out to be his partner in crime and spills the beans.

I don't know how still gun rights folks still trust our society to have access to firearms, especially semi automatic rifles which can be modified to be fully automatic. I'm assuming that is what happened with this latest shooting. However...how many more psychos do we need to kill our people before we decide to actually pass some sane firearm regulation? "It won't happen to me" can't work when we have mass shootings nearly every day.

So on CNN the police said there is no known motive but how is terrorism already ruled out? It’s domestic terrorism at the very least.

RIP to the victims, but certainly this is the time to debate gun control. Automatic weapons should be banned, semi automatic even.

It seems like the numbers just keep going up each year.

This guy wasn't even a convicted criminal (absolute clean sheet) and he purportedly got his hands on fully automatic rifles. Then everything found it that room.

It's utterly bizarre.

If this was really an M60 then gun control would not have stopped it. This had to have been bought in the 70s and early 80s before the ban on automatic weapons.

Gun grabbing will never happen people, the logistics and potential loss of life are way too high.

I mean, am I unreasonable to want to cancel my flight to Vegas because of this?

US and mass shootings, I can't swallow the reality of that.

RIP

You know why it was ruled out

Not ONLY did nothing happen after Sandy Hook, it went double negative when people actually called it fake and a set-up. America is fucking hopeless.

You offer your warmest wishes, and your deepest condolences................man, Trump needs an editor for his tweets.....

That's like saying "I'm joyfully sorry for you" when you mean to say "I'm awfully sorry for you"..............*shaking head*.............

Just wait for the Trump tweet saying the victims should have had guns to defend themselves.

Fuck. I saw this news earlier but had no idea of the severity or scale of what went on. Heart goes out to everyone affected :(

Get rid of fucking guns, America!

Watching Fox News live stream (I know I know) and they seem to be just in awe of how "skilled" and "diabolical" this guy is. They even compare him to Islamic terrorists and how it's much harder to pull off what this guy did. In a sort of twisted way it really sounds like they're bragging about how much better white criminals are.

Anyone else get this odd feeling?

Not just have, but somehow sneak all of that up to the 32nd floor of a Las Vegas hotel.......................the fuck!!!!!

Yes, it's a significant amount of weaponry to carry about in public, there is an open carry law in Nevada?, but even so I'd imagine that amount of ordnance would raise a few eyebrows?

You know why it was ruled out

Before people jump the gun, after the Pulse nightclub shooting, I believe they initially weren't investigating it as terrorism. I haven't read that terrorism has been "ruled out" as much as it is not currently believed to be terrorism.

Yep, been like one used in a crime since the 30s. The cost of a real machine gun is for the very rich and the ATF pays a visit at any time to check the firearms. The cyclic rate was very high from the video I saw, so probably one of those slide fire stocks. They are fairly cheap and pretty much turn a semi into a full auto. I'm surprised they are still around to be honest.

I can only assume that the people who live by the second amendment believe that the British will return any day now to reclaim over 200 years of back taxes.

Please enlighten me as to why anyone needs to own 8 assault rifles and over 1000 rounds of ammunition.

Disgusting worship of mass murder tactics

un fucking believable

Our president thinks that Alex Jones, one of the primary mouthpieces for Sandy Hook truthers is a valid source of news. And Megyn Kelly thought it was worth interviewing him for and the network went along with it. That's how little Sandy Hook mattered in the grand scheme of things.
