Football powerhouse Argentina could be out of the World Cup this Tuesday

What's the story here ?

Sweden already had quite a superior goal difference to Holland before last night's games. So a journalist asked them what would happen if Sweden beat Luxembourg 8-0 and yeah Dick Advocaat dismissed that and Sweden actually beats Luxembourgh 8-0. So now in the final game, Holland needs to beat Sweden 7-0 to get past them.

Looking at world qualifying, maybe a European can explain better. Why was romania a pot 1 team and ranked 8 in the world, ahead of England Spain Italy France etc? I know the rankings can be screwy but I never knew romania to have any success.

Anyways allowed for an easy pool for Poland to qualify from

what

haha

that's both hilarious and depressing at the same time

FIFA ranking means jackshit. Basically, having a recent string of "successes" can put you above national teams with much more history and better teams.

What's the story here ?

Dutch coach got asked about a possible result of the match between their competition for 2nd place (Sweden) and Luxembourg and what he would do if the result was something like 8-0. His response was the picture and he called it a stupid question.

That match ended in 8-0 for Sweden effectively eleminating the Netherlands for the 2nd consecutive tournament in a row.

History shouldn't matter to the ranking. It's a ranking of the best current teams, what they did a decade ago means shit.

Worth noting that if Argentina wins they'll be through since Peru and Colombia, who are both above Argentina, play each other and means at least one of them will drop points. Plus, Ecuador is already eliminated so they may lack motivation.

So has Argentina for like 95% of the qualification so far :P

Romania would curb-stomp the garbage Southgate trots out there. Don't fool yourself mate.

I'd like to have the title of "team who eliminated Argentina". Plus they play in high altitude, so that will choke the Argentinian pecho frios.

That Sanchez face is cracking me up.

Sad for Messi if it ends up happening though.

Neymar is great but you can't give him all the credit. Brazil took a chance last WC with a super young team and it eventually fucked them over hard, but now we're seeing them reap the full benefits.

That's not what happened last WC. We were simply not well coached and players crumbled from the pressure of playing at home turf.

After that we had an even worse coach who was sacked after being eliminated in pools of Copa America 1,5 years ago.

After that we got the best coach in the country and the team found its foot. We are playing collectively really well and we have a nice shot at winning in Russia next year.

LOL FIVE QUALIFICATION SPOTS
If Argenfuckingtina can't beat out the likes of Peru and others for a spot you can't claim it's some arduous region. It's hard BECAUSE OF TEAMS LIKE BRAZIL AND ARGENTINA AND URUGUAY AND CHILE.

You can't cop pleas when you have Messi and are a top FIVE side in the fucking WORLD.

The coefficient of the nations playing in the Conmebol is great compared to other qualifying groups. There is a reason why 4 get to go straight and often 3 teams out of those four end up in the round of 8 at the WC. Argentina never clicked as a team and that’s why it could miss this WC.

First of all, its 4.5. Remember that time Australia eliminated Uruguay? Because I sure do.

Secondly, its an ardous region because theres no easy win (Unless youre Brasil and you curbstomp every team). Do you think Peru, Ecuador, Paraguay and Chile are bad teams? Because all of those have played great matches against great teams.

The fact that Ecuador is now eliminated even though it was soaring high during the first round of the qualifiers shows you how chaotic and ruthless CONMEBOL is.

As a Scotsman, I am not familiar with this World Cup thing you are talking about, because we are invariably matched against like, Germany and Italy during qualifiers. It SOUNDS familiar tho.

Scotland was in maybe the weakest European qualifying group, Stinkles. You can't blame unfair draws this time, Scotland just sucks.

The problem with that team was the coach, not the players.

All my Argentine friends are going to have a tantrum to end all tantrums if it happens. My Chilean friends will be celebrating like they won the lottery.

if peru and colombia draw there's a chance chile will also be out. to be safe i believe chile has to get at least a point from brazil, who seem to be pretty tough to beat at the moment.

I mean, your team was good but nothing I said is false. You guys had the youngest players by average in the whole tournament.

7-1 wasn't all on the coach. Veteran players wouldn't have cracked like that.

Not a Barcelona fan but a world cup without one of the greatest player of all time is poorer for it.

i doubt it. argentinia wasnt that great in recent memory, in 2014 they kinda lucked themselves to the finals and while they were great at the finals they did loose fair and square, 2010 they were terribad. in particular in comparison to their neighbours uruguay. 2006 and 2002 were also rather unimpressive (2002 they didnt even make it out of the group stage)

Proving again that C. Ronaldo is the GOAT.

Have you seen the news about Portugal? They have to win too, buddy.

Edit: and don't worry. Messi and Ronaldo will be at the World Cup. They are money makers, FIFA know this. So chill.

Yikes. You sure knows how Fútbol works buddy.

As a Brazilian, I am finding all of this amazing.
You will go to the semi's and lose 7-1 again.

You're a one man team and that man got injured. That's what happened.
