Football powerhouse Argentina could be out of the World Cup this Tuesday

I couldn't care less about Messi. He'll never have a relevant international title with Argentina.

Not having to deal with Netherlands fans during the next WC will improve the entire experience by 100%, though ;)

CAF does not have the quality of teams. Conmebol is the most difficult confederation to qualify for. Even Chile and Colombia might not make it.

They might no make it because they fucking suck not because CONMEBOL qualifiers are "hard". Maybe Chile should actually try winning some games if they actually want to to go somewhere.

Venezuela and Bolivia are trash so that means 5 out of 8 teams are competing for slots. Peru is usually trash too and Ecuador is not exactly a powerhouse that should be giving teams like Brazil and Argentina trouble.

As a Colombian, this Tuesday will gonna be a chaos in every life aspect (Work, transport, etc.). That last game with those painful errors from Ospina was a cold shower for everyone. The initial plan (if Colombia secured the match against Paraguay... :/), was helping Peru to qualify (losing the game) and take revenge from Argentina in the infamous 2001 match against Uruguay. But now that option is impossible and now is a death match for a direct ticket to the WC.

But if Argentina doesn't qualify, oh boy... The day after, watching 90' Minutos de Fútbol on Fox Sports (and by extend, TyC Sports and the other Argentinian sport channels) will be a spectacle never seen before... XD

It would have been sweet for Colombia to win in Barranquilla and then for Peru to win against them, because that would have meant that both teams could celebrate the qualification in the same field. Now its going to be an all out slaughter :/

MisterChip's updated odds.

It's going to be so weird watching a World Cup without the Netherlands and Argentina. I hear Italy is in a tough spot as well.

It is not, it can easily qualify. It is already guaranteed a play-off place, as it is and will remain one of the eight best runner-ups. So they just need to win that play-off, with possible opponents like Denmark, Northern Ireland, Sweden, Wales and Slovakia it should be feasible. If they draw Portugal, then it could be a risk.

Argentina as a team makes no sense. You have Messi, Higuain, Dybala, Aguero to name a few, so how are they even struggling? And it's not like this is a one-off deal, this has been an issue since the WC Finals where they had so many chances and couldn't convert.

They are gonna make it, They will probably tie againts Ecuador but Peru will lose to Colombia and Paraguay will lose to Venezuela because God is real.

Yeah they have Higuain, Aguero (who is injured) Dybala, Icardi, Alario, but againts Peru their starting striker was a dude who failed in the mexican league.

Why? We know our team is shit and we dont deserve a go at the WC.

Dutch people are extra awful and obnoxious during a World Cup. I'm never going to live in a border town again.

I will never understand how North America have 3.5 spots while CAF have 5 spots. There's A LOT of quality african footballers that will not play in the world cup.

CAF should have 7 spots. NA should get 1.5-2 spots at best.

This Colombia game is going to give me a heart attack. I can't help but blame Arias for putting us in this position(Ospina as well).

As long as we get a tie, I'm hoping things go well for us with the other teams result lol

North America put three teams out of four through the Round of 16 last World Cup, one through quarterfinals. Africa only got two teams out five to into the Round of 16.

If you wanna complain about a continent having too many participants in the World Cup you should be looking at Asia.

CONCACAF teams constantly beat CAF teams.

because of those players you mention, only Messi plays and actually starts..

Problem with Argentina is them playing players who have no buisness starting. Di Maria, Benedetto, Sergio Romero, Otamendi, Mascherano, etc.

Always exciting to see potential favourites struggle. Netherlands, Argentina... uh oh.

This tension and pressure makes things more fun.

Eh, when my sister lived in Aachen, Dutch or German fans would cross the border and have a party depending on which side lost a game. A bit obnoxious, yes, but also funny in a way.

Netherlands couldn't qualify to even the Euros 2016 now the world cup. They've gone to shit as well

As a Dutch person: good. We've been thinking we're hot shit for way too long. We're not and Dutch football is behind the times at every level, starting at the way we train 8 year olds. Its hilarious to hear players who moved to other competitions say they finally started to train seriously. Dutch players are mediocre at best both at a mental, a technical, a tactical and a physical level. What is needed is to burn everything down and start from the bottom, like Belgium and Germany have done in recent times.

Imagine living in Belgium on the border when your own country hasn't qualified for a large tournament since 2002 (this was in the 2002-2014 period) and there are cheering, crazy, loud Dutch people all around you. kill me

I kinda believe we don't deserve to qualify. With the team we have, if our participation in the WC depends on the outcome of the very last match then we can't really complain in case we lose. It should never have come to this in the first place.

Plus it'd probably be funny to see all the meltdowns over here.

Oh, part of me wants Messi in (I plan on being at the WC so it would be nice to watch Argentina losing live), but just to imagine the headline Olé would give if it were Brazil the one not qualifying... No, I can't not hope that Argentina doesn't qualify.

I hope Argentina qualify. They were the runners up last World Cup, don't feel right that the runners up miss out on going one better next time. And I like Messi.

But I'd confess to being mostly ignorant of their qualifications apart from knowing the results and reading up on the reports so if you've watched them and can safely say they got what they deserved then that's that I guess.

Argentina doesn't deserve to go, that's all there is to it. They didn't deserve second place last time, and they don't even deserve to be there now.

Peru deserves that fourth place, goddamnit. We've been playing pretty decently and haven't gone in nearly 4 decades unlike the other teams lol

WC camera man is going to be quite sad by their asbcense this go around.

Isn't this Messi's last WC too? how old is he again? kinda lame if they get disqualified.

He’s only 30. There’s 0 reason he wouldn’t be present for qualifying and 2022.

Looking at world qualifying, maybe a European can explain better. Why was romania a pot 1 team and ranked 8 in the world, ahead of England Spain Italy France etc? I know the rankings can be screwy but I never knew romania to have any success.

Anyways allowed for an easy pool for Poland to qualify from

For one thing, England are absolute shit at international football. France have been on a slide too.

It’s really easy to game the system when it comes to FIFA rankings. Wales have been doing it superbly recently.

Only got themselves to blame if they do miss out. Qualifying in CONMEDOL should be ridiculously easy. Especially a team the caliber of Argentina. Shows not to taken qualification for granted.

No it's an absolute gauntlet. The top 6 teams are all ranked in the top 16 of the FIFA rankings and even that's a bit of a misdirection since Uruguay is better than their rankings indicate. Brazil is just a cut above the rest of the teams this go round. Argentina are a solid team but they're not leagues better than the other teams on the continent.
