Football powerhouse Argentina could be out of the World Cup this Tuesday

Enjoy this because in the near future everyone and their mother will qualify for the WC.

Can't wait to watch Tanzania VS Luxemburgo

"Powerhouse"? What is this? The 70s?

Nah, everybody says this before the WC starts, but when the group stages begins it's like a different tournament and the rankings don't matter. It's always the usual suspects at the semi finals. I remember vividly from 2014 people saying how strong Belgium and Chile were and how Netherlands wouldn't even get out of the group stages. There are some upsets sure, but it feels like the "traditional teams" always get farther regardless of their ranks. God I sound just like my dad.

Colombia sadly ruined most chances of this happening losing that way to Paraguay.

But you never know. Quito is almost as hard as La Paz for visiting teams.

The salt coming from Argentina could be glorious.

Im Argentinian and I can't believe that we won't make it to the World Cup. I mean the matches that we should have won easily at home were fucking ties and now we must go to Ecuador and win or we are out.
And to the people saying that the FIFA won't allow a World Cup without Messi: shit is really tense between them and the AFA (the Argentine football association) because they're not happy AT ALL with the new president. So I really doubt they'll try to help us.

It's nice of you to admit that politics would get in the way of any potential cheating this time around. hahaha do you hear yourself.

Many people in Argentina are saying that now that Grondona is dead, Argentina doesn't get any "help", if you know what I mean.

Take it half as a joke and half as a possible truth. It doesn't mean that Argentinians are proud of it if true.

But if Argentina doesn't qualify, oh boy... The day after, watching 90' Minutos de Fútbol on Fox Sports (and by extend, TyC Sports and the other Argentinian sport channels) will be a spectacle never seen before... XD

So much this.

It's not that much a "hate" against the players cause except for Di María who is a total cunt, the rest are overall nice guys. But oh man, a lot of the fans and for sure those idiots at TV shows like 90 Minutos de Fútbol are the ones that pretty much confirm every aspect of the argentinian stereotype.

I just want to watch Pollo, Cacini, Ruggeri, Cholo & Chavo crying as many tears as possible :) :) :)

Negro Bulos & the bald dwarf I can tolerate them, they are overall ok and much more unbiased & usually shows respect for the other national teams.

COME ON ECUADOOOOOR, DO IT, DO IT FOR THE JOY OF THE REST OF SOUTHAMERICA!!!!!!

I remember watching Fox Sports Chile after they lost against Bolivia and suddenly wanting Chile to be out of the World Cup

I will never understand how North America have 3.5 spots while CAF have 5 spots. There's A LOT of quality african footballers that will not play in the world cup.

CAF should have 7 spots. NA should get 1.5-2 spots at best.
Even though CONCACAF teams perform better every world cup compared to African teams with less spots?

Messi overrated? NeoGAF just cray cray man...

Yeah, the hyperbole here in Neogaf knows no bounds.

Messi is amazing, the problem is the rest of the team. Also, people expect from him to behave like Maradona, to show the same leadership and that's pretty unfair. While Maradona always had a strong personality, Messi is in comparison extremely shy.

Personally, I have nothing against Messi, he is cool in my book and I'd choose him over CR7 all the time.

Hey Mascherano is ok too.

I hope they make it really because even though it will cause me pain to watch them play if they don't then I have to root for USA and that will be worse. Nevermind that I haven't seen a world cup without Argentina in my lifetime so them not being in it would be weird.

Ok as in "he is a nice dude"? If so, yeah, I agree, Masche looks like a cool pal. As I said, Di María is the only cunt piece of shit in that team, the rest are very humble guys. But if we are talking about performance, no, IMO Mascherano is a problem too, he is "old" and that shows during the matches. He used to be great, but time doesn't forgive anyone. So, you can blame the coaches that keep calling him to be part of his NT.

I thought he played well last time around but you are right in that it was 4 years ago and time does not forgive.

Imo the problem is Sync, Brazil had the same problem in the WC, great players but they sucked together.

Only a good coach and time can solve this

I thought Agüero and Higuaín are supposed to be good.

They are good, great if you like, in their clubs, but as soon as they put their national team shirt on, they fail miserably at showing their skills.

It's a pretty known fact that some players can't resist the pressure when defending their national teams. Both Agüero & Higuaín are good examples of that (if you read argentinian newspapers/media, both of them receive most of the insults from the fans).

I agree, while there are players that shouldn't be in the team, Argentina has enough talent to choose from. Sampaoli is a great coach, but nobody can make miracles in such a short amount of time.

Let's suppose the worst happens and Argentina doesn't go to this WC, if AFA doesn't fire Sampaoli, I'm fully confident he will manage to make the team to play great again.

I, as a Colombiano, I hope that Perú make it. They sure deserve it. Gareca is the best coach of South America right now. He knows how to make a TEAM not a fucking display of "stars".

So yeah, here in Sudamérica y of course countries that their culture turns around fútbol have a saying: "El fútbol es como la vida", "Football is like life", so I hope that life is fair and Perú can make it.

Yikes, as a mexican i see my country qualify every year fully knowing our team won't come even close to winning, but living in a world where argentina could not even qualify is surreal.

Lol in the last WC you guys wouldn’t be in it if it wasn’t for USA defeating Panama in the last minute...

I hope Colômbia qualifies. Don't want to lose Reinaldo Rueda to the Colombian National team...

You say that, but with Portugal, Fernando Santos came in and all of sudden the team started playing *something* versus the *nothing* it was playing during the 2014 WC and 1st match of the Euro Qualification ( a defeat, at HOME, versus Albania).

Dude actually called a bunch of older dudes that were deemed "too old" by the previous coach and it worked to great effect. An experienced team helped with dealing with a bad start to the Qualification and he also slowly introduced dudes from the U21 squad as time went by.

Not saying that time won't help Sampaoli however the team currently seems to play the exact same as it did before he arrived and it's been, what, 3-4 matches? For this Qualification it feels like his arrival didn't really change anything. If the Federation made this bet as a long term plan of sorts, that's fine, but I'm not sure a failure to qualify to the WC will allow him to keep the job for too long :S

Note: When I say *something" I really mean just *something*. It wasn't pretty football or anything but the team got the wins (most of them by 1-0 or 2-1 too) it needed versus just, you know, losing >.>

It seems you haven't watched Argentina for some time, cause with Sampaoli for sure there have been an improvement. With Bauza they were SHIT, unorganized as hell. Now with Sampaoli at least you see there is an idea of what he wants and the team creates much more chances to score.

Also, they are a much more dynamic team, now.

Regards :)

And? That doesn’t mean he won’t be able to play or incapable. Ronaldo is 32 and soon to be 33 early next year. I don’t see him not playing for Portugal when he’s 34 either.

He's going to be like watching Toivonen when he's 34 in 2022. Do you feel the world cup would be worst off if Toivonen wasn't in the world cup next year?

This always made it me smile xD

But tomorrow we are gonna take the L, big time
I hope I wrong

Scotland was in maybe the weakest European qualifying group, Stinkles. You can't blame unfair draws this time, Scotland just sucks.
Fucking Strachan is the problem.

Hated him when he was with us and hate him with Scotland. Waited until 75 mins to bring on a another striker for example, refuses to pick form players for god knows what reason. He also talks shite about why we lost. Played fucking Tierney right back therefore fucking one of our best players.

We lost because he's shit and our players aren't great but have been mismanaged to be even worse. Northern Ireland has a worse team but a manager that isn't a tit.

He's only still here because our options are limited to shit and more shit.

What was that shit today about him saying that Scotland are genetically inferior/challenged?

He was complaining about our average height being the 2nd smallest behind Spain. The fact he named Spain should've made him realise he was talking shite.

I mean, I watched the last game mate :P Hence why I said not much has changed, the main issue (not scoring) among other issues, remains. Dunno it it's just one those "psychological" issues where after the 1st one finally gets in then they'll score a shitload of them (it does happen sometimes, phases where teams have hard time scoring despite creating chances) or something that requires more changes (in how said chances are created and to whom they are created for or just fresh new players to shake up things).

What Argentina needed right now (or rather, as soon as Bauza got fired) was to win. 1-0. 2-1. Whatever. By any means possible. Nothing much changed IMO, I don't feel he created the impact that the team needed, not on a short term at least (who knows about long term, with more careful planning and a proper chance to do his job).

The main issue IMO, a bit like Portugal even, is the heavy dependence on what Messi does or doesn't do but without the Barça level teamplay to boost his style . If Sampaoli (or some other coach) manages to create a system where not every single attack feels dependent on what Messi does and he can finally get some proper freedom to roam around and be lethal, then Argentina will be better for it, since unlike Portugal the rest of team (well, the attacking part of it at least) is basically almost all World Class players.

I also really think Argentina has the players right now to achieve that BUT the team system isn't really set up for it, not yet at least.

I think the answer to the bold part is: both.

You can almost feel the desperation as the time passes and the goal never arrives, in the second half you clearly see the spark is gone and they look kinda confused.

To me it's pretty clear Sampaoli is in the right track but he needs more time. Anyways, when he accepted to coach Argentina, he knew he was going to be running out of time from the beginning.

We'll see tomorrow if he and the team manage to achieve the "impossible".

Yeah, he knew time was running out from day 1. Ah well. Tomorrow will tell, so all we gotta do is wait I suppose!

Should be a fun bunch of matches, at least for those like me who aren't in the risk of having their heart exploding at the end of them :P
