Gran Turismo SPORT | OT | Putting it all on the line

That first racing etiquette video is like a tenth grader trying to pad his research paper.

“What is racing sportsmanship? Sportsmanship. We all know what it is. But what is it? It is three words...sports, man and ship. Put them together and you have sportsmanship. But what is sportsmanship? And why?”

I agree but I did like the second one as it actually explained how you can lose your SR rating

God I’m loving this, even though all I’ve done is license tests (half way through), mucked around making a crappy livery and had one online race on that god forsaken oval, which was a terrible experience...

Fucking loving it though. Such a nice game.

I am wondering though... does PS4 Pro render photos quicker and how much nicer are the 60fps replays and menus? Replays look nice on OG PS4 but whenever there’s a quick pan it does look kinda sluggish. Playing on pad and want a wheel and a wheel stand. (I have a PSVR already btw). I can only afford a wheel and stand or a Pro.. and the game holds up pretty well on the original PS4 so I think my money is best spent on a wheel..

What does Gaf think?

Brands Hatch was a bit rougher this evening than it was this morning.

Brands Hatch was alright I just didn't spend enough time with the car before I started and massively overshot paddock hill on the last two laps and was comfortably third all race until that point. Suzuka was worse I randomly got hit with a massive penalty so dropped to the side to get rid but that was easily the worst thing I could have done and never been that far back and it was like being back in C again.

I mean, it does the job, but there needed to be a playable element to it as well.

Ok just had my first few (arcade) races while the rest of the game downloads. I chose intermediate which turned out to be a joke.

Maybe it’s just me, but the handling feels kinda floaty? Like I’m driving a boat. It’s not terrible it just doesn’t feel real. Is that just because I’m in these slow-ass starter cars?

Looks great though!

Man, I hope they expand on the circuit challenges. I am reducing my lap times, knowing what to look for on completely foreign tracks to me. I learn them much faster this way, and I learn the car mannerism much better.

Pro works really well, didnt compare to to regular PS4 though. But yes, you gotta have the wheel. I got gimix running for the demo, took a while but G25 works great.

As to the game, just run some tests, painted car and did some online race... first of all, trials are awesome, they are trials that everyone loves... and then you get into race.

I had amazing time ending up 8th...a lot of fun, trying to race cleanly... people gonna love this when they try it, it is completely different from online in previous GTs, which I hated and never played with all the zapping around. Now I played vs competitors in Brasil and USA (ping has to be at least 0.5s to 1s from me) and it was really good.

Amazing.

Lol, yeah it was really bad. They need to force the AI to watch those damn videos. Worthless dickhead AI.

First picture from Scapes. Just pressed triangle on one of the random scenes in the main menu and ended up killing like 20+ minutes messing around in it. Haven't even driven yet. Insane amount of customization. I didn't pay $60 for a photomode, but now I'm not sure if I would actually be disappointed if I did. LOL

I was always a Forza guy so i had to ask this lame question, between GTS and Project Cars 2 which one is more gamepad friendly?

GTS, no contest. Don't get me wrong; Project Cars 2 had pretty nice pad settings straight out the box this time, and I thought they did a good job. But GTS just has a level of finesse, it just feels like it was made for the Dualshock 4.

impressions from reddit indicate that the only driving mode in VR is 1 vs 1 (AI), 2 lap race. That's it. You can't even do fucking time trials. it makes NO sense. I would have been totally satisfied with a time trials mode, I really can't believe they let that shit out the door.

Well, I don't thank Tag Hauer would approve of the time trials scores being registered in an experimental VR mode game engine; it would undermine the integrity of the records! =)

I spent way too much time in scapes during the demo. Was comparing shots with friends the entire night that we forgot to do the actual racing.

Can't wait to get into this proper!

I really love the circuit challenges. They are such a great way to learn each track. Its addicting I have to get some sleep cause im getting sick :/

I dabbled with the Photo mode in GT6, but have absolutely fallen in love with the Scapes mode in GTS. It was literally the first thing I did, completely on a whim, and I've really enjoyed making my own photos and looking at photos shared by other players. It's surprisingly deep and for some unexplainable reason just very addicting.

I don't want to beat a dead horse but I was wondering what's the DLC plan for this game? I was thinking of getting it but it's very sparse content wise.

I don't really mind the cars but the tracks count is extremely low for a 80$ (Canadian) game. They almost had 4 years to build this game I feel it's a ripoff for that price.

So is there anything coming up in Free DLC? I would reconsider it if that's the case

Zero news on that front. Just that more will be coming. More cars, more tracks, more events. No idea if it will be free or paid, no idea when.

Is there a GAF PSN Names list somewhere? I've never played GT, always a Forza and PGR guy..... But since I have a PS4 now this is it. And my friend rankings are barren :(

Feel free to add me, SmileyFM on PSN!

I really just play a lot of Destiny and NHL18 besides.

You have to quote this post with you PSN
We made it boys and girls. Quote this post if you want your PSN in the OT for GAF GT Racing

Photo Mode is ridiculous in this game, more options than I think I've seen in a game before.

And at long last, finally a GT game where I can drive my own car! It's the same make, model, and year, but a different trim. And the steering wheel's on the wrong side.. lol. But still, it's much better than I've ever had before.

There's no major single player progression at all?

I have no idea where some get it just license tests
Mission Challenges are also fairly similar to past campaign modes found in previous GT titles, and is probably the meat of the Campaign Mode overall. You are placed into a racing situation, on a set track and sometimes with a specific vehicle or vehicle requirement, and you attempt to pass the trial, earn a medal, and move onto the next challenge. Challenges range from hitting a certain top speed before crossing the finish line, to winning a full race with certain conditions enabled, and some are much more difficult than others. The leaderboards definitely play a factor in the replayability of these challenges even if you achieve gold, because... who doesn't want to be at the top of their leaderboard friend's list? Again, this mode is chock full of opportunities to earn currency, experience and vehicles, so it's a must play.

Rented via Redbox.. pretty torn on it so far. Love the racing and a good part of what I see but I have zero.. and I mean zero desire to race online. I would have loved a full on single player career mode.. gonna keep racing here to see if it clicks enough to equal a purchase.

So, am I nuts?

Just like the demo, I’m playing on a 4k HDR10 tv and I can’t switch to “quality mode” in the options. The option is grayed out and defaults on “framerate mode.”

Any thoughts on this? Anyone else experiencing this issue? Am I missing something simple?

I want the game to prioritize quality.

Quality and framerate mode are only for 1080p resolution. Quality downsamples in 1080p mode, framerate prioritizes framerate in 1080p mode.

GT Sport on 4KTVs is running in quality mode by default basically unless you've manually set your PS4 to 1080p (which then allows you to choose the options).

Switch to 1080 in system settings.

t-gt wheel review

* Base is heavy AF, has a scary self calibration that slams the wheel to the stops left and right.
* Wheel itself is solid and buttons are good quality. Not impressed with material covering the touch points, feels rubbery. this is in no way a real leather wrapped wheel (pleather? fake leather?). But its ok.
* The gear change plates on the back are thin pieces of pressed metal. Do optional shifters fit over them? because they suck in terms of feel. they work ok albeit with a loud click.
* there are a bunch of knurled knobs that by default don't do anything in GT
* there seems to be a blue led at the top of the wheel which by default doesn't do anything in GT

In game, the wheel has a pretty strong by default force feedback that is always fighting to return the wheel to centre and while the tires have grip, transmits good feedback. What is very good is there is also a transmitted rumble/sub sonic feel that reflects the road surface, the tire grip, and a distinct change to lumpiness in this rumble feeling shortly before the tires let go.
If you spin the car, the wheel tries to spin as fast as it can to both stops, and the motor gets quite loud. But in normal use you can't hear the motor that turns the wheel.
There is a small fan noise constantly.
Heavy as hell power brick shaped like a turbo charger. Ok. Whatever. Am I paying for a designer power brick?

When you plug in the power it seems dead. No lights no twitch no sound. Only attaching USB or re-attaching it shows it is powered. That one confused me for a bit. You have to press the PS button to "switch controllers" otherwise its dead, like a DS4.

No special calibration options at all in game. Just button and function assignments. There is a force feedback level number in the driving options though.

It is immediately obvious with the wheel that you can modulate power (duh) and catch or balance a minor slide, and get better feel beyond just numbers and tire screech when the car is on the edge and also indulge in some show-boat counter steer drifting, even in the heat of a race.
With a controller it is a case of drive well, or make a huge mistake. With the wheel you can drive well also, or you can drive overly aggressively and slip a lot more but without going off, or if you do get two wheels off, it is easier to recover.
You can also place the car more finely for example those drafting exercises I often had trouble passing at the last moment with the controller whereas with the wheel you can get closer without miscalculating.

Conclusion: I haven't tried Fanatec so can't say whether this is better but the road surface and tire side-wall rumble functions add to immersion. The force feedback is pretty solid it feels like a magnet not a belt or motor, and I don't have any issue with smoothness.
The pedal base is heavy and the pedals look the part and are firm, the wheel includes some kind of optional rubber mod for the brake pedal which probably makes it resist more but it will still be position sensitive, not pressure sensitive.

There is Driving School, Missions and Circuit Experience, as well as Single Race, Time Trial, Drift Trial and Custom Race in Arcade mode. All net you credits, driver XP and mileage. Driver XP levels you up and unlocks some early features as well as tracks in Arcade mode. Mileage is another type of currency that you can spend on select Cars, Driver Gear like helmets and poses and Livery options like colors and design elements. You also get random car prizes at certain level ups, and when completing game and event milestones.

That's all outside of Sport mode, the competitive multiplayer skill-ranked races. There's definitely progression to be found in the non-Sports modes.

All of that stuff still feels like a career mode to me, but laser focused on improving your skills, your understanding of racing with others, and mastering each track. I can learn more in 30 minutes of Circuit Experience than in days of effort in the career modes of other games.
