Gran Turismo SPORT | OT | Putting it all on the line

The Sport mode is not about winning the race, its about trying to be faster than guys immediately ahead and behind you while avoiding contact with both.

Also its probably well known by now, but hitting someone from behind, even a slight nudge will have massive impact on your SR. You could have dozen straight blue SR climbs, but one hit like that could demote you by whole grade.

Kinda confused on how the online mode works. Are there only certain events you can join? Is there lobby's or anything of that nature?
There are the three daily race events in the Sport menu. Those are the ones that repeat at the specified intervals and have fixed conditions. That's where you should start, and it's really the focus of GT Sport.

Then there are lobbies, which are player created online races. Those can be open to the public, or restricted to friends only (it's set by the creator).

Holy crap at that 1,000 wheel O_O

I hope I get to a point in my life where I can drop that kind of cash and be comfortable with it :P

I don't really play racing games much but I played some demo derby games back on ps1 back in the day and one of my family members had a wheel and it was really fun to use.

Do they really make that much of a difference in performance or is it more for enjoyment?

Finally finished golds with the beginner's driving test section. That last race was a squeaker for me.

Also re-did the first row of Challenges. Man, that Camaro does not even deserve to be in a game called GT Sport. Also, so many ovals... :O

I almost rage quit the demo trying to gold that Camaro race.

Our second family car is a 2000 Holden Commdore V6, so comparable in RWD, engine & probably weight & that’s more nimble than that GIANT POS.

I’m so happy it wasn’t just me being a shit driver.

The Ai keeps spinning me out from the rear, do they have brakes? This shit is pissing me off and making me hate the game more than I already do.

How do you access lobbies? Can't locate them in any of the menus.

Yes and yes. Did some of the missions on a controller in beta. Played them again on a wheel and was notably faster. Game with a controller is passable, but with a wheel it's difficult to stop playing.

I just ended the night with my worst race. On the "B" daily, ... I kept getting hit from behind and ending up off the track. I finished 23/24 and got a red SR rating at the end of the race. Feels bad, man.

At least I'm still in the "B" SR category.

Whatever you do, never finish a race with an active "slow down" penalty.

You could argue there are a lot of faults and issues with GTS, but the online racing is the best I've experienced since iRacing, it's the best there is.

While red isn't good, don't panic unless you're dropping ranks. The way it is setup at the moment, it's easy to cop a few hits and receive SR penalties but only minor.

Be careful on the oval though. It's either a gold mine for SR rank ups (pole position) or a pit of despair (anywhere else).

Man, this game is incredible in VR. I can't get enough of it.

I thought Driveclub VR was amazing and this blows it out of the water. Outstanding work PD. Now please add an MP mode in VR so that it will be perfect.

I've done time trials before on Brands Hatch, but I never understood how to truly take it at speed until the Circuit Experience videos and trials. Aced all the sectors individually, but tying that into a full, smooth lap is going to take me some real practice.

Its is a serious lesson in throttle control and proper turn-in and handling secondary hidden apexes, and all on a track with some nice verticality to it and destablizing kerb stones for good measure.

I'm loving this.

Driveclub VR almost made me hurl 3 laps in. Is this alot better?

For what it's worth, I feel ill when I play RE7 too ( but not badly).

It shits on DCVR to be honest and I like Driveclub. The graphics are so clean on the Pro, and from what my buddy on a regular PS4 tells me it looks awesome on a regular PS4 too.

The driving itself feels like the most authentic driving I've ever done in a game thanks to VR. I can judge distance so much better than I can in Driveclub or even Project cars VR on PC. I dunno what PD did but it's insane. I dunno if it will make you dizzy since I'm not prone to dizziness in VR but I can definitely tell you it's much better experience than Driveclub VR.

Finally got up the nerve to do my first online race, even though I'd done quite a few in the demo. Did Brands Hatch with an Alfa 4C, qualified 11th, but the actual race was a mess, people flying everywhere, and either taking corners too fast or too slow. Hard to have a good rhythm with that kind of chaos. Ended up going off the track a couple times, also got bumped quite a few times. Gave up trying to compete and just focused on clean sectors, ended up with a Blue rank. The next seven people in front of me had Red, big surprise.

edit: also it's past midnight PST and no track changes, so I'm not sure when they change...

Probably won't be too different. Racing games are pretty intense in VR.

I assumed as much. That said, I find I am most uncomfortable in VR when something is close to me while I am moving. E.g. walls in RE7, and the shrubs/trees/rocks in Driveclub.

I am secretly hoping that the wider more traditional (and bare) tracks in GTS will help out.

Finally nailed all Golds in the License/Driving School tests. Most of 'em weren't so bad really. Which one gave you the most trouble?

I tried it also

Legit the future of racing games

I actually liked playing 2d mode with the vr also nice big screen also less aliasing

But man the perception u get from vr is a game changer

Is owning cars a bit irrelevant now? Considering I can use any car in sport mode even if I don't own it?

That's not always the case. While they supply you with cars for certain events, for other events you'll need to select a car from your garage and if you don't have a car from a certain class then you won't be able to participate in that race.

What I read on a different forum:

"I played the 3 tracks available from the start in VR and I must say, it's a joke, or rather an insult. Kazunori Yamauchi apparently can't get his head out of his ass to focus on gameplay rather than the car.

Good things first, it controls beautifully, load times are decent, it runs smooth and the resolution is ok. The car details are sharper than in DC. And that's where it ends.

The render resolution might be higher than DC VR, yet the track detail is even less detailed. The lighting is completely flat, no shadows, only 2 times of day per track which both look absolutely bland. It seriously looks like a high res ps2 game outside the car.
DC VR has shadows, the sun interacts with track detail and cars, and looks quite lovely when the sun is low. While low res, it's still very convincing at night racing.
Dirt Rally has weather on top of all that and tons more track detail compared to GT Sport's rally track. They focused on what you look at while racing, not the car.

While the cars in GT Sport are in full detail, you can only move your head 1 foot in either direction before the screen blacks out. What's the point of all that detail if you can't even look at it. You can't stick your head out the window either like in DC and Dirt Rally. Oddly I did manage to reset the viewpoint in such a way I could see the helmet of the driver (me) with reflections on it, what's the point of that.

Currently you only have the option of a 2 lap race against 1 AI. Except no difficulty setting and the AI is so slow you can't call it racing. My guess is the AI is only there so you can check out the outside of your car, since the AI always picks the same car."

Do you agree with the criticisms?

Putty, are you using a wheel? Your times are consistently up there on my friends rankings in the drivers school.

Fired up the game this morning and golded the first row of driving school. Gonna take my sweet time with the SP events on this one. The meat is clearly on Sport mode and that’s fine by me.

Are we going to have a GAF lobby at some point or even a GAF Time Attack challenge?

t-gt wheel review

* Base is heavy AF, has a scary self calibration that slams the wheel to the stops left and right.
* Wheel itself is solid and buttons are good quality. Not impressed with material covering the touch points, feels rubbery. this is in no way a real leather wrapped wheel (pleather? fake leather?). But its ok.
* The gear change plates on the back are thin pieces of pressed metal. Do optional shifters fit over them? because they suck in terms of feel. they work ok albeit with a loud click.
* there are a bunch of knurled knobs that by default don't do anything in GT
* there seems to be a blue led at the top of the wheel which by default doesn't do anything in GT

In game, the wheel has a pretty strong by default force feedback that is always fighting to return the wheel to centre and while the tires have grip, transmits good feedback. What is very good is there is also a transmitted rumble/sub sonic feel that reflects the road surface, the tire grip, and a distinct change to lumpiness in this rumble feeling shortly before the tires let go.
If you spin the car, the wheel tries to spin as fast as it can to both stops, and the motor gets quite loud. But in normal use you can't hear the motor that turns the wheel.
There is a small fan noise constantly.
Heavy as hell power brick shaped like a turbo charger. Ok. Whatever. Am I paying for a designer power brick?

When you plug in the power it seems dead. No lights no twitch no sound. Only attaching USB or re-attaching it shows it is powered. That one confused me for a bit. You have to press the PS button to "switch controllers" otherwise its dead, like a DS4.

No special calibration options at all in game. Just button and function assignments. There is a force feedback level number in the driving options though.

It is immediately obvious with the wheel that you can modulate power (duh) and catch or balance a minor slide, and get better feel beyond just numbers and tire screech when the car is on the edge and also indulge in some show-boat counter steer drifting, even in the heat of a race.
With a controller it is a case of drive well, or make a huge mistake. With the wheel you can drive well also, or you can drive overly aggressively and slip a lot more but without going off, or if you do get two wheels off, it is easier to recover.
You can also place the car more finely for example those drafting exercises I often had trouble passing at the last moment with the controller whereas with the wheel you can get closer without miscalculating.

Conclusion: I haven't tried Fanatec so can't say whether this is better but the road surface and tire side-wall rumble functions add to immersion. The force feedback is pretty solid it feels like a magnet not a belt or motor, and I don't have any issue with smoothness.
The pedal base is heavy and the pedals look the part and are firm, the wheel includes some kind of optional rubber mod for the brake pedal which probably makes it resist more but it will still be position sensitive, not pressure sensitive.

Amazing writeup, thanks!
