Its not too early to tell.
Be ause incase you haven't noticed, the OT section is gone and that political discourse certain people apparently wanted more "fair" moderation of is not planned to return.
And the disgruntled people are HAPPY about that.
Why arent we seeing a single backlash thread from people who innocently just wanted to talk without being jumped on complaining about political /social discourse being completely nuked?
I mean, If I say that I want to be the same gym membership benefits as my co worker, I'm not going to cheer if the decision made is to remove ALL gym membership discounts am I?
So why are these people who supposedly want fair treatment feeling that they've won a victory now that NOBODY gets anything?
If we're brutally honest, the truth can only be because these were discussions they were never going to be part of anyway, but disagreed with, and now they can be happy that NOBODY is having them.
I think there's a chunk of people that are exuberant that there will be no more liberal
politic talk.
But I, and I don't think I'm alone, feel like the temporary death of OT and politics talk is a good thing. Hopefully it'll be back, but we need a better way to moderate that side of things. People were not having nuanced or meaningful conversations in every politics thread. Hot takes, stale oneliners and regurgitated half facts predominated and anyone who disagreed had to go through a gauntlet of low quality posts to have a conversation. I miss OT, I miss the great posters and interesting topics, social issues included. I learned a lot in my time here. What I don't miss is the low level of discourse that filled the majority of each page, and was repeated every thread.
GAF has been carefully moderated for years. We have a pretty solid community. There were some shitty people like in every forum, but we did alright. Most posters are pretty liberal and well intentioned in my experience. But the dogpiling that happened whenever a poster said something that disagreed with whatever reblogged tumblr post everyone else had just finished reading was absurd.
It's pretty easy to see that the level of dialogue in OT had diminished. There were people willing to have meaningful conversation and I think that's what a lot of you all are missing. But in between those meaningful posts was just a bunch of simple knee jerks. I even agree mostly with what the knee jerks are saying at the root of it. But their delivery, lack of understanding and angry troll behavior made OT a landmine for even the most progressive poster.
Maybe it was going through gamergate, or maybe its trump that sucked out everyone's patience, but OT threads were just so tense. Everyone was still looking for the wolf in sheep's clothing all the time. I guess I can't blame them. But a group of impatient, simple posters who are too frustrated to try to understand that everyone asking a question or presenting an opposing view (right or wrong) isn't an alt right trump supporter does not make for a good community.
Miss the OT Community threads, but OT needs a break while we learn how to handle trolls who happen to agree with us ideologically.
