NeoGAF will always respect women/racial minorities/lgbt

I really liked the political and Black/minority news and history posted here. Are there any messageboards that are similar? No hotep shit, just real history.

I wish. I learned a lot about black history in this country like Black Wall Street from this forum. If someone has somewhere I would also be interested.

I said reasonable people.

Anyone who thinks "rap music rapes my ears" is worth a 6 month ban is not reasonable and falls in the category of over-zealous and self-destructive SJW that sabotages progress for perfectionist exclusion.

It's definitely worth a ban or at least a warning.

It's offensive, unnecessary language and it's an infantile, reductionist comment. It's not a comment that leads to productive conversation. It sounds like something an edgy 13 year old would say

Isn't it weird that people want to use sjw as a negative? Fighting for social justice is bad? Lol. What do you fight for? Injustice? Or too privileged to care? It's embarrassingly pathetic

The thing about "SJW" is that, like most words that stick, it serves an unfulfilled niche. People immediately know what you mean when you use it. I realize liberals don't like it, but I'm not sure what censoring it accomplishes. Personally, I don't see what's so offensive about it. If you believe in social justice, what's wrong with being called a warrior for the cause?

It's not offensive. But people use it as an insult. Insults without real merit behind them serve no purpose regarding productive conversation.

It's using something as an insult without explaining why the insult is bad. If you are using sjw as an insult it says more about you than the person you are trying to insult.

Given that people now have free reign to post whatever the fuck they want.

If we collate all the data, it seems what people were upset they couldn't talk about, was that there were things that they couldn't talk about.

Because all I can see now that people are free to talk about what they want to talk about, is how upset they were that they couldn't talk about what they wanted to talk about.

I see no enhanced political discourse now. No deeper discussion of social and political views.

There are no posts or threads about any particular political policy they now want to talk about.

Not about any disagreement with any particular so oak or political community.

No kind of religion vs science talk.

Literally everything peoole wanted to talk about that they couldn't talk about, is that they couldn't talk about what they wanted to talk about.

So, we've lost all of the amazing and truly useful and life changing off topic OTs, so that people can now freely talk about the fact that people couldn't talk about what they want to talk about, which was simply that they couldn't talk about what they couldn't talk about.

But now they can.

It's great.

I guess?

Most people, especially on here, are on the side of social justice. The mockery comes from the "warrior" part. Because joining in Internet outrage isn't fighting for anything. And also, while the term is certainly abused by the alt-right, it's mostly reserved for people like the Hugh Munghus lady.

I know a couple good fb groups but nowhere near the member size of this forum, and are more focused on geek shit than politics/news. I can inbox you if you're interested. They're basically geek/creatives groups with a cool vibe for pocs

Its coming back I don't want to imagine what the shit posters would have done to threads we've had actual discussions in. Keeping this infestation down to gaming ends up preserving the political social justice threads.

I know that didn't answer your question but I hope you stick around its crazy but gaf did cater to minorities more than most sites. I took that for granted.

That's what it comes down to for me. Being able to talk comics without reading complaints about SJWs every time a non-white male character is seen. I definitely didn't take it for granted. I waited at least 8 months for my account to be activated and I really appreciated it.

I mean, the site's been back for less than 24 hours so maybe it's a bit too early to tell.

I think what you're seeing is pent up frustration with GAF's draconian moderation policies being vented.

It's a healthy discussion and long overdue.

Lol no it's not. Again, refer to the following gif:
wwAhkEi.gif

It's a parody that is incredibly true about the usage of the word. In fact, look at ANY channel on youtube dedicated to "calling out" people whilst simultaneously using that terminology, even those who say they're merely "skeptics" and "trying to be rational." or "moderate." Or hell, even go on twitter and look at who among the most well known people use the term. You'll see incredibly common patterns that boil down to always siding with alt right ideology. It's thinly veiled as hell. Fuck that term.

I know this is the worst time and not a great place, but I really need to talk to someone about some trans related issues right now.
If someone could PM so can talk, that would be very nice.

My plan was to ask this in whatever forum comes next for me, but I don't think I can wait any longer.

nah, you can go to the Marvel fb page right now, go to any post that primarily features a non-white male character and find multiple people ranting about SJW Marvel. Like, we get what it means and how people use it.

I had always understood it to be derogatory term favoured by alt/far right groups. Making an insult of the fight for greater social justice tells me a great deal about the person who uses it.

Exactly, people coming out of the woodwork to say "FINALLY, we can use that term. It's not really that bad guys." Yea we've had years upon years of alt right nonsense AND the "just asking questions" self proclaimed moderate brigade nonsense to say:
FearfulWavyIberiannase-small.gif

Are people really trying to rationalize use of the term SJW? This is what I feared would happen... If you're supposedly for "rational discussion" then that word should be off limits!

When off topic is back up we can have those threads back again. I didn't post much in comic threads but I lurked in them a bit. I didn't have much to add on new releases because I have to wait 6 months or so for stuff be on Marvel Unlimited.

I don't expect policies to change drastically to where the mods will allow people to shit up a thread with posts about SJW and PC when it comes to comics with minorities in it.

Because it's used as a pejorative. It's a bit muddy to use because it should be something a person can be proud of, but because of a certain element of poster that's not really possible anymore.

I think the reality is that there's a lot of people who are overzealous in their mob justice and outrage, and frankly the GAF response to EviLore's situation is another indicator of that. Given all the details that have come out from both sides: A short sighted move? Cringe worthy? Yes. Sexual assault? No. These types of reactions, at least to me, rob women who are actually assaulted of a fair look absent skepticism.

I've been around GAF since well before NeoGAF. Never been banned once in 15 years or so. There was a period of time in the early days of GAF that exposure to so many different backgrounds proved enlightening to me (in particular homosexuality and gender dysphoria), and without GAF my exposure would have been more limited to the communities around me. I'm certain I'm a better person with more nuance and insight today because of that exposure. I say all that to say in the last few years it's been a literal echo chamber. There isn't room for rational, reasoned, healthy discourse, and that's been disheartening to see this place transform into that.

If something offends YOU, you own that. Being offended by an analogy that a 13yo would say is what I find childish. A ban is even more laughable. Block the person if you're offended! Stop telling people how to think or do. That's the kind of crap I couldn't stand on this forum anymore.

Trying to make the world a better place is evil.
Only if it's for minorities, women, and LBGT specifically.

SJW isn't even an analogy. #Sorrynotsorry it's not becoming normalized.
And neither is the term pleb.

I agree, I'm never one for name calling in a discussion, but what I think is concerning is the jump to conclusion that anyone who uses the term -which can be heard from South Park and H3H3 and heaps of other sources- has some hidden alt-right agenda.

This respects no one.

Opening admitting to sexually assaulting someone(then banning anyone who called him out for it)

People have shown time and time again what SJW means and what those creators mean when they say it. It's still parroted around by the same people. It's pretty obvious a large chunk of their audience aligns with them. It's not wrong to say that those who use SJW will most likely be in the gamergate camp. If you use SJW pejoratively then it's up to you to prove to us you're not a gamergater. One way to do so is to accept it's not an insult.

But guess what? They still use it.

I want to know how many times you can post this before eating a ban.

I'm honestly shocked they haven't gotten you yet.

Its not too early to tell.

Be ause incase you haven't noticed, the OT section is gone and that political discourse certain people apparently wanted more "fair" moderation of is not planned to return.

And the disgruntled people are HAPPY about that.

Why arent we seeing a single backlash thread from people who innocently just wanted to talk without being jumped on complaining about political /social discourse being completely nuked?

I mean, If I say that I want to be the same gym membership benefits as my co worker, I'm not going to cheer if the decision made is to remove ALL gym membership discounts am I?

So why are these people who supposedly want fair treatment feeling that they've won a victory now that NOBODY gets anything?

If we're brutally honest, the truth can only be because these were discussions they were never going to be part of anyway, but disagreed with, and now they can be happy that NOBODY is having them.

so where does this line of thinking end

if someone posted a racial slur would you say the same thing?

Probably says something about the mods on right now. They know I'm speaking the truth and I've loved this forum for a decade. I'm sure many of them loved it as well.

"you're a N*GGER!"

What a disgusting prick.

Yesterday was interesting for me. I learned that a LOT of gamers are against "SJW's." I was told I was being a child for "not accepting someone else's worldview." But is it childish, if I am against people being disrespectful/violent/hateful/etc. towards other groups of people? Is it childish to be against Trump and his supporters/enablers, who are clearly ok with abusive behavior, and who lack empathy towards other groups of people?

.

Snowflakes! Echochamber! Stop talking about politics! I want a safe space for my games only discussion!

You are oppressing people by not letting them oppress people. #logic

Wait, does SJW not mean extremist? Maybe it's Tumblr thing but when SJW is used, it's usually used against those who want the extreme side of social justice. I.E. agree with me or die, which you see a lot on Tumblr. I haven't really seen it used anyway else.

Nah. It's used as a derogatory term for anyone who cares passionately about equality

It went from maybe be a tongue in cheek way to describe some of the very extreme people you might be on tumblr to an alti-right euphemism for basically anyone who speaks regularly on acceptance and tolerance

Just check the twitter comments under any women who dares speak out on issues regarding women's issues. They are immediately harassed and called SJWs. The fact that people think that being able to call people SJWs is something to be proud of now is telling of where they want this site to go.

I always thought it was used on groups like Radicals and stuff. Like I said, I mostly see it only used in Tumblr, and even then it's being used less and less, so just assumed the "warrior" part of it was used for those willing to use the same methodology as say a Nazi, just with a different ideology.

Same methodology as nazis? Like gas chamber genocide. Sorry but there is no left equivalent of nazis.

If you are looking at places complaining about leftist radicals you are already in questionable territory and company

Yeah, browsing Twitter trying to figure out wtf was going on with GAF this past weekend was a big eye-opener in that regard. Just a bunch of chuds who already had their own places to congregate celebrating that a place they had no interest in frequenting filled with the sorts of people that they openly don't want to associate with was shutting down.

Refer to the gif above. And no, don't equate people who're called sjws with nazis.

I think there's a chunk of people that are exuberant that there will be no more liberal
politic talk.
But I, and I don't think I'm alone, feel like the temporary death of OT and politics talk is a good thing. Hopefully it'll be back, but we need a better way to moderate that side of things. People were not having nuanced or meaningful conversations in every politics thread. Hot takes, stale oneliners and regurgitated half facts predominated and anyone who disagreed had to go through a gauntlet of low quality posts to have a conversation. I miss OT, I miss the great posters and interesting topics, social issues included. I learned a lot in my time here. What I don't miss is the low level of discourse that filled the majority of each page, and was repeated every thread.
GAF has been carefully moderated for years. We have a pretty solid community. There were some shitty people like in every forum, but we did alright. Most posters are pretty liberal and well intentioned in my experience. But the dogpiling that happened whenever a poster said something that disagreed with whatever reblogged tumblr post everyone else had just finished reading was absurd.
It's pretty easy to see that the level of dialogue in OT had diminished. There were people willing to have meaningful conversation and I think that's what a lot of you all are missing. But in between those meaningful posts was just a bunch of simple knee jerks. I even agree mostly with what the knee jerks are saying at the root of it. But their delivery, lack of understanding and angry troll behavior made OT a landmine for even the most progressive poster.
Maybe it was going through gamergate, or maybe its trump that sucked out everyone's patience, but OT threads were just so tense. Everyone was still looking for the wolf in sheep's clothing all the time. I guess I can't blame them. But a group of impatient, simple posters who are too frustrated to try to understand that everyone asking a question or presenting an opposing view (right or wrong) isn't an alt right trump supporter does not make for a good community.
Miss the OT Community threads, but OT needs a break while we learn how to handle trolls who happen to agree with us ideologically.

Same methodology as nazis? Like gas chamber genocide. Sorry but there is no left equivalent of nazis.

Some of these people were not object to the idea of genocide. I can't tell if they are joking but they seem serious. I should stop listening to these people, but I feel like I should be aware of all kinds of people out there. But I'm honestly scared to go near 4chan.

I said reasonable people.

Anyone who thinks "rap music rapes my ears" is worth a 6 month ban is not reasonable and falls in the category of over-zealous and self-destructive SJW that sabotages progress for perfectionist exclusion.

So what's the inflection point from reasonable poster to self destructive SJW on a 6 month upper bound?

Anything more than 1 month? 2 months? Just trying to get a feel, here.

Anyone expecting to hang around NuGAF without it turning into a garbage pile of alt-reich nazi fucks posting about SUJUBUDUS all day will most likely be sorely disappointed.

Yep and I liked to think that this place was above it all. Clearly not the case.

As a queer man from a Muslim background I stopped feeling safe in this country a year ago. GAF was kind of my last bastion of hope. There are more Trump supports coming out of the woodworks now that it's safe for their opinions to be known. They support people who literally want us dead.
2017 has been a hell of a year I tell ya

Nah. It's used as a derogatory term for anyone who cares passionately about equality

Nah, it's more when those people who care passionately about equality act like assholes engaging in heavy tone policing and paint anyone more moderate than they are as literally Hitler. At least that's the way I've typically seen it used (no I don't generally frequent 4chan or tumblr).

Getting to extremes serve no one. The forum was too hive minded and a comment like you made reinforced. Someone using n-word would have no respect from anyone anyways.
