It's sickening people are showing their true color

Strict moderation is good. It just needed to be more transparent, have a warning system, and have an appeals process.
It was great if your opinion was on the list of acceptable opinions. I didn't bother posting much because the slightest provocation resulted in a ban and some sarcastic message from a mod.

Gaf will once again be what it was from the start and what it should have been in the last couple of years and that is GAMING forum.

Gaf will survive this and be much better place than it was.

We will finally be able to have meaningful discussions about games and gaming.

lol

This is the new face of GAF lol

Strict moderation is a good thing (look at how out of control this place has gotten since the mod team left). What this moderation team needed was more transparency and accountability however. Stuff like the modbot account should have been eliminated a long time ago because it was basically used by mods as a way to leave one passive shitpost before locking a thread.

What's going to happen to the moderation of the site going forward is bad in every way possible

You think the place is gotten SO out of control? Some are claiming it has become some kind of alt right circle jerk bastion, but I'm just not seeing it. I'm seeing a few comments here or there (largely getting banned) and that's about it. The most "out of control" thing going on is the rash of suicide posts/topics, and metric fucktons of vitriol aimed at Evilore.

But I agree 100% with the other point... the moderation here has never had any transparency or accountability whatsoever. Making it fully anonymous is moving in entirely the wrong direction, and absolutely will not inspire trust. The ModBot account was a horrible idea from the jump, and this basically doubles down on that.

Though I guess actions speak louder than words... if these "anonymous' mods do a better job moderating (instead of the groupthink lynch mob bullshit they engaged in previously) maybe things will improve.

It just needed to be more transparent, have a warning system, and have an appeals process.

It didn't JUST need those things. But that would have been a hell of a start.

It was great if your opinion was on the list of acceptable opinions. I didn't bother posting much because the slightest provocation resulted in a ban and some sarcastic message from a mod.

With most of the mods the policy that led to a ban was "don't be an asshole"

So I'm curious what your opinions are

Though I guess actions speak louder than words... if these "anonymous' mods do a better job moderating (instead of the groupthink lynch mob bullshit they engaged in previously) maybe things will improve.

An anonymous mod team is almost certainly destined to become a group-think lynch mob, because they do not factor in any opinions other than their own because there's zero reason to. It's everything that's wrong with the modbot idea, amped

It was great if your opinion was on the list of acceptable opinions. I didn't bother posting much because the slightest provocation resulted in a ban and some sarcastic message from a mod.

98% of the people banned were banned for being jackasses, being disrespectful, or going against warnings.

What exactly do you think GAF is going to become now that a ton of people have left and the moderation team that kept everything together is gone?

It has the potential to become better if the new modding staff isnt banning everyone left and right.

That's impossible.

Games are part of culture, society, and human personality. It will intersect with social, political, religious, etc issues. You can't just discuss games because you would then be discussing just the god damn graphics.

ZeD8Xhz.png

You can make everything about politics, it doesn't mean it was meant to be specifically about politics. It's a contradiction in and of itself: you can't help to talk politics in games because you made outright political games. And it's good to send a good message or make an impactful statement, not when it's what you build the game around, because it's games.

I know it sucks. I particularly hate seeing people say "NOTHING of value" was produced or lost (like Colin Moriarty and many others have said.)

Colin could never handle how his awful arguments about subjects like an all digital gaming future and the PS4 Pro were meticulously picked part on GAF, so he retreated in to his alt-right echo chamber.

Yeah it is really good when somebody with one set of opinions can be banned thirteen times and come back, but anyone who upsets Besada gets traps laid at their feet. Maybe this place is dead in the long run, but any replacement consisting of shitheads like that is going to be terrible.

Kept everything together by banning all people that they didn't agree with ?

No warning just ban if they didn't like your post. I am sure happy they are gonna and we can finally discuss games without inserting politics in every thread and post.

Regarding your first sentence - the guy who was most notorious for that is still a moderator here

Your avatar makes your second sentence literally impossible

I do think mods banned people and moderated based on personal disagreement with no transparency or accountability.

The solution to that is not less moderation. It's more transparency and accountability

I literally just got “REEEEEEEEEEEEED” on another thread that is now deleted. People from the_donald are now posting in droves

With most of the mods the policy that led to a ban was "don't be an asshole"

So I'm curious what your opinions are

"I am capable of still enjoying a game where one VA has expressed racist opinions in the past and don't think it matters that much."

"I don't mind a game with conservative political themes and think it could have merit."

It certainly be enough to get dogpiled, and mods would be certain to ban you if things got out of hand, regardless of who actually caused problems.

Again, "don't be an asshole" meant "don't say anything we disagree with, because only assholes do that."

Strict moderation is a good thing (look at how out of control this place has gotten since the mod team left).

Strict moderation is good in theory. Banning people who make stupid posts elevates the level of discussion! The problem is in deciding what precisely counts as stupid.

Here are some things that *weren't* banned: people calling for "heads on spikes" to "teach people a lesson"; people calling for everyone to contact a person's employer or possible future employers to make sure "they never work in this industry again"; people accusing other users of being neo-nazis or white supremacists for disagreeing that they have the facts right; people accusing anyone of correcting info that was being used against someone of DEFENDING them and thus being a supporter; people foregoing the discussion topic to personally attack other gaffers who disagreed with them and cast aspersions on their character.

So the problem with the "strict moderation" is that it wasn't exactly uniformly applied.

An anonymous mod team is almost certainly destined to become a group-think lynch mob, because they do not factor in any opinions other than their own because there's zero reason to. It's everything that's wrong with the modbot idea, amped

Probably. That's why I'm not optimistic on this new moderation policy. The only reason for optimism is it's hard for it to get much worse (short of them beginning to allow this place to devolve into 4chan, which I don't see as particularly likely).

You wouldn't have been banned for saying those things.

Ignoring everyone who dislikes you leaves no room for growth. Instead of tone-policing someone's criticism for being too harsh or hateful, it's more productive to get at the root of why they feel that way and try to see things from their perspective.

The harsh reality is that not everyone who resents GAF is irrational. If you wait for others to change their tone before listening, you're only denying yourself insight.

Again, there is no insight of any kind in pure hating. If you listen to this filth then you're just spending your lifetime on something completely pointless. Trust me, I've spent this weekend reading a couple of hashtags on Twitter - I'm still surprised how low and stupid some people can get.

You wouldn't have been banned for saying those things.

I literally saw someone threaten to dox someone over a statement like those, and when the poster responded by you know, flipping out at the guy who threatened to try and dox him, he got banned instead.

I don't think you realize how awful the community and moderation team are here.

The only place I'm seeing that is on twitter.

The only place you're seeing such circle jerks? Or the only place you're seeing today's gaf described that way?

Because if you mean the latter you're sorely mistaken. Some of the more inflammatory topics created on this were swiftly deleted (my favorite one was the topic comparing today's gaf to 1939 Poland) so maybe you missed some of it; but the Evilore megathread has plenty of such claims.

Then listen to me and some others who are posting here. We don't hate gaf and yet we saw serious problems with it in how users jumped to attack people, companies and other users. I'm telling you, some of the haters *do* have a point even if they're going about making it in the most obnoxious way possible.

Colin could never handle how his awful arguments about subjects like an all digital gaming future and the PS4 Pro were meticulously picked part on GAF, so he retreated in to his alt-right echo chamber.

All of that is correct. However, he was also subjected to some really vitriolic and hyperbolic character assassination and yes, bona fide harassment on Twitter. I don't like the guy and I disagree with him on almost everything, but that's not ok.

As said by others, I also hate how they state the forum is dead and nothing of value is lost. Like what the fuck man, there are those who loved GAF and they can't see some of us care to not see it go. I just unsub these YouTube channels. The shit they say makes them no better than the worst of neogaf members.

The only place I'm seeing that is on twitter.

Welcome to 2017. Where the assholes show how ugly and uncaring they truly can be. Be proud of the apathy you hold to everything but consuming media. Assholes.

Without heavy and strict moderation, anybody that ain't white is going to feel the burn, 0% chance this place won't turn into a "SJW" hater white guy heaven. Hate isn't the opposite of love, apathy is. Certain people do not like seeing or having these discussions because the bad guys look like them and they don't like having they privilege checked. I'm high-key super interested if any of the progressives will stick around. I'm also interested in why it's okay for other art forms to not be divorced from political and social issues (and for good reason) but people cry and want video games to be.

Notice the bolded word, that's key. In other words if you aren't 100% with it, if you don't agree all the time with whatever change neogaf is championing at any given time, you're automatically alt-right. I mean, it was blatant even without this whole fiasco.

i think it's disingenuous to reduce what happened with certain users to be "banning over a disagreement"

there's always going to be a disagreement between the content of a post and the code of conduct when a ban happens... like duh

let's be honest: many users were banned for making disrespectful and flippant posts. and for some reason they can't own up to it and instead play the victim. like this user who said he was banned for "shitting on rap" when he actually said "rap music rapes my ears"

Sure, I agree with this. However I don't see how's this relevant to anything really, especially to those a-holes who were attacking GAF (including those who were exGAF then already) over the weekend with stupid tweets and gifs.

You are truly blind my good man.

The last thread I saw where someone was ranting about "SJW PC" culture got deleted before I could even reply to his nonsense. Compare that to twitter where even mainstream videogame personalities have replies full of alt-right garbage.

Can't say I've ever seen a community crumble like this ever. Gaf has definitely had its up's and down and change has been needed. It's unfortunate the circumstances are what changed it. I don't think a community like it will be built up again though. I can't quite pinpoint when it started going downhill but when the users are essentially walking on egg shells to voice an opinion you know it's bad.

People have always attacked GAF. There are people who have justifiable concerns about the latest incident but then there are others who'd rather see the entire thing fall out of spite.

There are vocal communities that exist to hate GAF. It genuinely wouldn't surprise if they're the equivalent to the types who turn up to protests and start breaking windows.

But communities of a certain size do tend to experience moments like this. Let others start their own smaller communities if they so wish. This place was clearly never for them.

Three years ago is when you had to really start watching your words.

If the same standard were applied to every argument sure, that might work. But compared to the horrible hateful and disrespectful comments people can freely make so long as the person or subject they target is considered an acceptable target by the mods, that comment is nothing.

If rules were actually enforced on everyone equally it'd be fine. But they aren't, at all. It's clear rules about civility don't apply when you are on the "correct" side.
