It’s important to know what you want of, expect from, and are willing to provide to, a message board. I would say that your attitude of unwillingness to educate seemed to be manifested in some of the more active mods and community members here recently. Which is a shame for a board that skews young due to the minimum sign up age of 13 and the primary subject matter of the forum.

There's been abuse in both from what I understand. People are just focusing on the OT section a lot more it seems.

You're asking a marginalized group to educate their own oppressors about said oppression. Think on that.
 
I like how we've all been dragged into a freedom of speech argument, or acting like the closing of OT has anything to do with the left-leaning tone of GAF.

It has nothing to do with any of that. It's to cover up a backlash against the leader.

It reminds me of how anywhere on the Internet, people have to do Google searches for others and explain, to an incurious, disingenuous "debater," things that they learned themselves in a damn book or through lived experience.

It really doesn't, this was just a downaward spiral from people talking about mod abuses to everyone's "hot takes" on these people actually being deserving of all their bans with some going on to implicate there were no mod abuses at all.

I'm not trying to defend that guy/gal. But why condemn a individual for doing something that everyone has done? Can anyone on this planet say they haven't laughed at a joke that would be insensitive to another group of people?

You keep thinking you are that perfect white knight that makes things better. You certainly love that pat on your back. But if you really put some thought into it, you will see that by starting a debate, conversation, whatever with instant insults and labels, does nothing, absolutely NOTHING good. You are making things worse.

And the saddest part is -and for sure you now have that label over me so ofc you wont even believe this- that for a lot of people you put these labels up, are almost entirely in agreement with the general cause of injustice and racism and all the other things wrong with this world.

These are people who actually want to support you and yet you like to come off as so self righteous that you simply become irritating and you end up dividing us further apart.

EDIT: Not that this changes my views on these matters in general, just for people like you. Fanatics. Self righteous. My views are way clear in my head and I know what I believe firmly.

Well, I'm not condemning them. That seems like a leap.

It's more about how one responds to the critiques than the moment itself. Their defensiveness doesn't make any sense to me, especially on an anonymous forum.

Personally, I’ve found it much more meaningful and educational to engage with others differently positioned than myself rather than merely hitting the books or learning from my particular groups. Granted, one has to be open to being educated, which is one of the rubs-sincerity required. Others learn differently of course.

Strangely, I often find myself having to explain to people why capitalism is good. I'm an economics professor, and I live in a western capitalist economy, so I know very well both on a purely intellectual level and on a lived-experience level that market economies aren't perfect, but they work pretty well compared to the alternatives. I wonder if you apply that same logic to those sorts of issues.

OK, about 22-24 hours ago, there was some really sick image posted on here in this thread, and then fortunately removed by mods. I was (foolishly) trying to make out exactly what it was and whether it was real.

Please don't post the image again, but can anyone tell me if what I saw was actually:

a bent over dead woman with head crushed and with shit spewing like a volcano from her rear ,
like the aftermath of a serial killer claiming a victim. I could see no head, but only what looked like blood and gore where there should be a head
?

Definitely was the sickest image that I have ever seen. Mind-blowingly disturbing and almost a crime posting that on here for people to view without warning or censoring.

Is my description above accurate? Did anyone else see this? Are you as disturbed by this as I am? Do you know the source of the image and whether it is real?

Should have known you would completely dodge the issue in your irrational last post. In any case, a debate doesnt have to be of people on diametrically opposite side of the issue, you seem to have some childish notion that the debate would be between a person who supports negative portrayals of women, and Anita, when in reality debates are often way more nuanced than that, they where common ground is established and finer points elaborated upon. Besides that, Anita covers a lot more ground than that with more nuanced and specific points, some of which people disagree with, for example, I completely disagree with her Witcher 3 analysis. As i said, the finer points, but you obviously arent interested in that, you just want to ban people on irrational inferenses.

Yeah, I think gaf is dead at this point. It'll limp on for a while but it's done essentially. I kept wondering why he would get rid of OT. The claim about mods being harassed didn't make any sense since the only account modding OT for months was ModBot.

It's clear that two things are going on here.

One, he's was trying to shut people up by closing OT since people there are more likely to call him out. Gaming side on the other hand can't even make it through an Anita thread without turning into a graveyard. Which brings me to the second thing he's trying to do. He's basically trying to shore up support from the overly sensitive people who get so upset anytime someone talks about the other aspects of gaming such as, race, gender, diversity, harassment, sexism, and racism. Tyler Malka is essentially trying to Make Gaming side Great Again in an attempt to keep that sweet, sweet advertising money rolling in. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if he tried to make NeoGAF more alt right/gamergate friendly if he really started hemorrhaging users. You know that tried and true business strategy that successful businesses like The Escapist have used.

Well sometimes its deserved (Like Weinstein's case), and othertimes it just ruins people's lives (like Rolling Stones hit piece,) and in this case he didn't help himself with the hyperbole, but the core of their stories actually mesh, and with the relationship coming into play and them still hanging out afterwards, it just seems like it's premature to use THIS INSTANCE as something to destroy the guy over.

Now if you have an issue with his other actions? totally understandable. And good luck to you, I just prefer to not jump immediately to a conclusion on this case due to the information beyond the hyperbole and nonsense.

I also happen to think people just "making new forums" have no clue what goes into an actual forum not hosted by Vbulletin/shitvr etc. You have to pay for servers, networking stuff, all kinds of shit, and you have to manage it as most forums never REALLY take off. GAF was a rare thing which happened at just the right time, all thse other forums will have a hard time i predict, and combined won't match the activity of GAF even in its weakest moment.

I also think, people should give it a week or so, things will settle down, new faces will replace old ones, new Sales people will make new threads etc. and hopefully those who left are happy and know I personally have no hard feelings either way. I just prefer to stay here, for now.

I can't speak for all of these groups, but one specific community got singled out in the new rules (and had all of our major OTC threads locked for no reason other than a blatant powertrip) when we had absolutely fuck all to do with any of this bullshit so it's no wonder this specific community in particular keeps asking for permas
 
Can't wait for off topic to be back up. Sad no more poligaf cause I learned alot but it was a given seeing how bad it was during the election. Until then gaming side it is.
