I think it depends on whether you want actual CONVERSATIONS or just a thread where everyone just agrees with each other. When I say "loosen the reigns ", I'm referring to easing up on the ban hammer. If someone says they support a border wall, that shouldn't be a perma ban for "espousing Nazi idealogy", or the like. Let the person explain why they support that idea. That's the real world, that's life.
You've got a lot of people here and on the Internet saying they've gotten bans here for ridiculous reasons. I think that's why so many people are loving NeoGAF's turmoils.

There's no 4chan screenshot and if there was I haven't seen it. But I have seen the real list and it has a slew of terrible posters that manged to bring the forum to its knees with their fanaticism and dogmatism. So yeah, that forum is gonna be exactly as I expected.

The problem with dogpiling was not a lot of people disagreeing with a poster, it was that it was used as a signal from backseat mods that someone "wasn't a good fit" and needed to be banned. I don't think you or many in this thread disagreeing with you seriously expect you to get banned for your opinions.

Look. There is a point here. A lot of these stories are lacking details or specifics about the ban and for some cases those details is what the reason for the ban was. S if people omit it you might guess they either just didn't feel like it or they're being disingenuous. And since there's a lot of trolls on this forum is pretty possible they're being disingenuous. So I can understand someone thinking that about another person here.
But then again that has to be balanced with there have been very clear instances of mod abusing their powers and some people just in general had their intentions in their posts misconstrued.

I lean left and even I felt this chilling effect others mentioned, often deciding to cancel threads/posts I had started typing up over the last couple of years here because I had seen how rabid some of the active members had become. I dared question Hillary Clinton during the election and rather than having that question answered I was treated like an enemy on a battlefield. I expressed disappointment with fellow posters when they were calling for John McCain's death in a thread that revealed he had brain cancer and somehow I was deemed the monster. I'm still here, so I fared better than others, but the Off Topic section and the forum in general became an increasingly hostile place where that kind of behavior became common and civility became a rarity.
This unfortunate event has the potential to bring some semblance of balance back to the forum, removing some of the toxicity and hopefully making it a more welcoming place, both to those who have silently lurked here for years and those looking to join a forum that plays host to civil discourse on a wide variety of topics. Just like life, NeoGAF will be what we make of it.

If the admin wants to remove all political discussion to take the forum on another route it's fair and even-handed. I disagree with it like I said at the beginning of this thread but I understand given how terrible both Gaming and Offtopc had become. If the admin wanted to ban all liberals or all rightwingers or all socialists from speaking I'd be very very pissed off. Can you understand the difference?

Come on, there were unspoken rules in the political threads. Things that were not to be said. Mention open borders is an issue for security, or Hillary is a crook and it was immediate racist! Nazi! I read so many posts from people that said if you voted third party, or didn't vote at all that you were JUST AS BAD AS A WHITE SUPREMACIST. It's total horseshit. There was no room for discussion and to the notion "well, come prepared to back up all your words" is fine if you are given a few posts to do that. Most people make a comment or thought and if it's asked about would then reply and have a discussion. In those threads, you could one-line ALL COPS ARE FUCKS all day and all you would get is posters saying, "TRUTH!" but if you said, I voted Johnson because Hillary does NOT have the country's best interests then you had better have had 1000 words and 10 links to support your claim in the same post.
Most people on this site (that remain) are not GGers, racists, homophobes or Islamophobes. Most on here believe in having the right to live the life you want if it doesn't cause harm to others. But, a lot of people disagree on the finer points. These are the areas for discussion that will hopefully be allowed to occur. Two opposite minded people need to be able to talk candidly, even if one view might not be so hot. This is how minds can be changed, how people can become aware of things they might not have considered before. Expecting people to already be "on board" with the left leaning stances shuts out those who are open to have an honest discussion about them.
Subpar Spatula was also one of those questioning Hillary Clinton though. I don't know their opinion on John McCain but they definitely argued with the Pro-Hillary Crowd back in the day. So I can say they definitely have some grasp of how those discussions went.
Although I do wonder how Spatula had a decent experience with that, I've seen Aeolist have an incredibly hard time arguing with the Pro-Hillary Crowd. (actually wasn't Aeolist banned over one such discussion?)

We have all seen the posts where someone says some heinous shit and gets rightfully called out and banned. We have also seen the poster that even after 5+ pages is still defending his or herself against people that mis-read the initial comment and can't be bothered to read the rest of the thread, because they have to get their hot take in.
The difference here is that you are quoting multiple people at once and inviting responses. That's not a dogpile it's a gangbang.

I can't understand how anyone would think this forum isn't super left-leaning. I felt it was so much in the left/liberal/progressive side that it kinda was - to use the buzzword - toxic to themselves. I felt people were constantly feeding each other with all kinds of right-wing/conservative horror stories that sometimes made people depressed and at worst people were actually encouraging others to cut ties with their families because of politics.
The air felt so damn thick and hostile in most politic and social issue threads that any sort of dialog between people holding different views was naturally weeded out and all that was left was people on the left/liberal/progressive side either collective agreeing on everything they say or then starting to raise the bar on what is acceptable and good and slowly then sometimes turning on each other because some aren't left/liberal/progressive enough.
I would've understood if it would've been about people discussing about why one is wrong about something but it was about making judgments about the morality of the opposing side. It wasn't just that one would be wrong about something. It was about one being a bigot / evil / a shitty person and whatever else.
It certainly felt that if you say something wrong you would either have people dogpiling on you or mods banning you.
That's why I would rather have both a more politically diverse mod team and more politically diverse users in general. That would require making rules a bit less strict which might then lead to more people getting their feelings hurt from time to time, but I don't think that would necessarily be a bad thing. People were hurting their feelings even in their own - again a buzzword - echo chambers anyway. There's no point in having political and social "safe spaces" like this when people can't seem to relax even there.

And good luck with the new forum, don't expect a lot of people to visit there, the only reason people tolerated the post-2012 neogaf was because it was the biggest gaming forum on the internet, not because of the toxic environment.
