Your entire premise is based on your feelings and not data. Immigrants are actually less likely to commit crimes than Americans. No one should give your whataboutism that paints immigrants as somehow more deserving of greater scrutiny because it doesn't line up with the facts. Following the chain of events that has happened this past week has been surreal. I’ve been habitually browsing these forums for something like 15-ish years, so I really would miss this place if it were gone. Hopefully all of this dumbass account suicide trolling is over with soon, but I imagine it will take a few weeks at least.

I agree with the sentiment that OT was generally a safe space for the extreme left, and I find it somewhat amusing that fostering that environment backfired big time. Lessons to be learned! Still, despite its obvious biases, OT was my news feed. There was a great variety of topics, breaking news was on GAF first, people from all over the world participated, etc. I’m really hoping that level of discussion will be reached again.

The only thing I don't understand in all this is the link between the accusations made against the site's owner and the banning of political topics. Why does one lead to the other, and why is all that coming to a head now?

There has always been hate against Neogaf by the usual suspects for being pro "SJW" or being liberal leaning in general. But why is that a problem exactly? There are plenty of places on the internet for right-wingers and alt-righters, some that ban at the mere mention of dissent.
I can't think of many places on the web for progressive minded people anymore. The so-called neutral grounds are overrun with alt-righters these days. Marketplace of ideas and all that, but there are far more echo chamber/bubble-y communities than GAF out there. It was nice to discuss topics in an arena whose members mostly shared the same base values I do. And there certainly aren't that many other places to discuss progressive values as they relate to gaming.

My hope btw is that at least the forum can somehow fix now its relationship with the gaming industry.

I think it had more to do with the amount of moderation time that the OT section of the site generally requires, and the fact that the majority of his moderation team left. At any given time there are many topics, several of which are political in nature, which require a great deal more scrutiny than gaming topics. This is mostly assumption as I don't venture to the gaming side often... except now... on the daily.
