Identity Politics
Classical liberalism
Neoliberalism
Social Conservatism
Libertarianism

I can think of a list as long as my arm for the first, but none for the views center or right of centre. You have to be delusional to think that post GG and during and after the election that OT wasn't dominated by a very narrow range of political topics and views. And these bleed over time to the rest of GAF.

I'm here. Don't feel great about it. I feel kinda conflicted, to be frank.

While we were down I learned a new appreciation for gaming Reddit, but my forays into Something Awful just kind of reminded me why I left. It's so compartmentalized you miss out on a lot of things if you don't go to a bunch of different subforums. I guess the same could be said of Reddit.

You know what I did learn in all this, politics and social stuff aside? The value of a good mobile layout. GAF mobile is a beautiful thing, as is Reddit is Fun. A forum without a great mobile user experience is almost useless.


I don't know that GAF will ever be what it once was, but I also don't know if there's room in 2017 for a new successful forum in a world of Reddit and Twitter, either.

I guess we'll find out, folks.

I do know one thing for sure, wherever you post, decent people shouldn't be scared to post.

The left you're thinking of and what people are taking about when they say far left are different. Stuff like socialized healthcare is far left (by American standards) while getting angry at people for not being inclusive is... well, it's liberal but it's not related to "leftism", the way people are talking about it nowadays.

And just to add one more voice: I'm gay. I had a very strong feeling that I was gay when I was three years old. I didn't even know what "gay" was, or that it was bad. I learned that it was deemed as taboo/evil when my parents brought it up, later. You can't tell me that I made a choice to be gay at that age. That's just who I am. I tried very hard to be straight but nothing worked. Why? Because I'm gay, and nothing can change it.

I'm sure all the gay people who Mike Pence encouraged to get "therapy" (aka get shocked and abused) said the same thing: no matter how hard a gay person tries, they cannot be straight.

There's a lot of GAF dirt out there, it's fairly well known, and it goes back for quite some time. If it's news to anyone, then you haven't spent enough time outside of GAF.

I've been posting here for years with some degree of knowledge of what was going on behind the scenes, and it didn't discourage me. It's not my business. For me, GAF is an extremely useful tool and a comprehensive outlet for discussing games, no more than that. The idea that the board is suddenly, shockingly 'tainted' isn't news to me. If anything, there's a chance for improvement now that the facade has been dropped.

The moderation was all over the place, but the community (or at least some loud voices) got spun to the very far left. I remember the "Let's kill all X" posts after Charlottesville, the discussion that HIV is "just a nuisance, not a serious disease anymore" during the law change in California and finally the notion that "those moderate Democrats" are complicit with Trump, the alt-right and all Nazis out there and basically the reason for everything bad out there. Oh and of course the "Antifa are heroes!"-surge which came up as well, based on ignorant views about what Antifa is.

This is the very definition of the far-left. If it were only about being against sexism and racism, at least I wouldn't complain. I would also add some things to that, being against xenophobia, homophobia and against violence in general, for example. But suddenly everyone not pushing farther ahead to the far-left became a sexist / Nazi / racist. This also includes people who don't partake in Social Media Campaigns aimed towards destroying people's lives even before legal action was taken or even considered by the victims.

The majority of people on GAF are (moderate) progressives, which is good, and the discussions are healthy most of the times, but the moderation of far-left hatespeech (and yes, it's hatespeech if it's targeted against other living beings) and cyber bullying was pretty lax.

It's quite simple: If we behave like them (alt-righters / 4chan trolls / Nazis) for whatever reason, we lose moral standing. And this has to be considered if we are to succeed in convicing the people around us that our views are stronger than theirs. If we stop thinking and cling to whatever ideology, we will lose the support we need for the movement.

Both political ideologies engaged in identity politics. That isn't some "extreme ultra far left" thing.

Difference being one is seen as the "default" and the others were seen as some kind of aberration and attack of the status quo.
