If you have an issue with someone's argument then come up with a valid argument of your own to counter with. Attacking the person based on their looks and sexuality is proving their point.

This is the sort of shit that is going to keep people away from this forum and I don't care if you quoted it from another forum it's obvious you agree with it.

Persephone definitely doesn't have a valid point worth listening to. It's just that the behavior you responded to above is also not appropriate. Some morons on kiwifarms or /v/ don't vindicate her complaints that *ERA* of all places is some kind of unprogressive hellhole that's overtly hostile to women/minorities. Her entire premise is ridiculous.

But I definitely agree that the post you quoted is a bad post, and it's also against the guidelines in the topic title/OP. A mod did come in to voice an informal warning. Should it have been harsher? Maybe maybe not.

It's hard to say honestly. The one thing Era has going for it is there aren't many good gaming forums anymore. The big site forums are poorly moderated and full of kids and fanboys. Reddit sucks for discussion, most gaming subs are just news aggregators and people fishing for karma, console-specific subs are fanboy hellholes etc. This place is still slow as hell.

The politics stuff on Era is terrible, but I think most posters just stay out of it and stay for the gaming news, great gaming OTs etc. that used to be over here. The politics and moderation were just as bad here for years and it didn't go down until the "scandal" that generated enough unrest for them to successfully get people to migrate in huge numbers. It will probably take something like that to cause the same to happen over there as all the political and moderation is moot for the average member who stays out of those thread and is just there for the game news, Game OTs, Game and OT Community threads etc.

For this site to continue rebuilding it's going to take getting more news threads posted, making sure there are good OTs for most major/semi-major releases going forward etc. I'll try to chip in by posting some news threads here and there, game OTs aren't my forte though with the expectation for the amount of info, images etc. for a good OT. Maybe the staff here should start posting OTs for a while to help drum up traffic.

I hear ya. I unfortunately can't/don't help a ton in those areas. I'm not as "plugged in" to the gaming stuff as I used to be, and I don't play games enough these days to get REALLY active in OTs and stuff. Most of my gaf/era time is quick pop-ins while I'm at work. We'll see how things go.

And they were dealt with by a mod almost instantly. A small handful of troublemakers does not a trend make. Of the couple thousand that frequent GAF these days, I doubt the 10 or 15 trouble makers are what is causing people from coming to the site. The only reason they would is if they were trying to find reasons to not come in the first place.

Sadly, the majority of those Gaming OTs get bogged down by politics and the same overly harsh, authoritarian/far-left moderation that plagues the entire site. Hell, some games you can't even really talk about specific subjects (such as its developer in the case of Kingdom Come) or the game in general (such as any of the games they have banned for being *evil*).

Now to move the topic a bit, this is a thread that talks about off-site communities (not only Reset), and I have to say that there is some odd disconnect between groups. For example, there was a post on the Easy Allies forum that stated:

It seems that some people on the far-left are very much keen to believe that the "SJWs" are a boogeyman created by "videogame peoples" (as apparently 'gamer' is too scary for them to say). Also the idea that Jordan Peterson is excusing closeted bigotry is just... that is hilarious.

Meh. I never found that to be all that bad over there. Most game OTs are fine, and even for games with controversies attached like Kingdom Come they usually had mod warnings in the OP of the OT to keep that out of the OT and had dedicated threads for discussing the controversy around one of the developers. Game OTs were/are especially good once they get moved to communties as it's only fans playing the game at that point.

But again, I'm pretty far left so a lot of the stuff that triggers a lot of you all leaning the otherway didn't bother me. I just got tired of that place due to rampant fanboyism/console warring and the constant negativity and hostility overall.

This is a thread for discussing other communities/forums. GAF has generally always liked to keep threads as on-topic as possible, and I assume that's still the same. From your post elsewhere, you're not used to forums getting 1,000s of posts a day--there's not really much in the way of general chat threads on here. The closet things are some of the threads in the Community forum areas, but those haven't bounced back yet in gaming or off topic.

The issue comes when you are told you cannot speak about a part of the game (and talking about the head developer in a positive light is part of that discussion). Being told that there is no discussion to be had and that something just *is* (in this case: Daniel Vavre is a racist/GG-supporting/asshole) does not sit right with me. Sure, you can have that opinion - but that is just a personal opinion. Not a fact. They push it to be a fact.

I agree with your stance on this for sure, I just never saw any of that in any of the game OTs I was in. The political threads about some games, yes (and still lame there), but not the OTs. But I'm sure I just missed some.

Did they every really intend that to be permanent? I was there week 1 and the gist I got of that was it was a temp thing as there was no sense having Junior/New Members when a majority of people signing up were long time GAF members.

In any case, not having a Junior/New Member (Neophye/Neo etc. here) is unwise unless it's just a no-holds barred forum with little or no moderation. You need some restriction on creating threads to stop spammers and trolls, and new members who go on rants, attack people etc. should be treated more harshly than people who've been around a while. They haven't earned the benefit of the doubt like a long time member who the post is out of character for has, and if someone is aggressive and breaking forum rules from day/week one after signing up that's a pretty good sign that they're just not going to be a good member.

I'm not saying their standards over there for what a "good" member is are appropriate or reasonable by any means. Just that I think it's good to have a junior/new member system and have those folk on a shorter leash. I'm glad GAF is still doing that as well, paired with more reasonable moderation.

The state of resetera(and of neogaf until last year) is not enough to this people. They really want a small bubble of like minded people.

All one needs is a little empathy. But the second you do show exactly that to someone The Names or The Little Helper don't like, that empathy nets you a ban.

They want one thing and then the other ever so erratically. It is really gobsmacking how much it took a turn for the worst the last month or so.

It was indeed a temp thing, which is why things like Adopt-A-User (Which we also have!) were a great service to newbie members without postings rights. Then, the admin closed those threads without any explanation beyond something like ''they outlived their purpose'' or some stuff like that. The most prolific helpers at the time, including me, really didn't get that.

In hindsight, perhaps that moment was a sign of things to come in the way it was handled. :/

Remember these are the same group of people who used to run around this place with their "Believe" slogans that referred to if any woman brought forth an allegation against a man it is 100% true.
