I didn't even know this movie existed until I randomly googled what the Raid director was doing nowadays. Stevens + Evans = Win if you ask me.

Yep, all in on this one. Dan was the man in The Guest and The Raid 1/2 are some of the best action movies I've ever seen. The good old fashioned English horror is just the cherry on top.

The Guest was an absolute joy; shamefully overlooked and one of the very best horror movies in recent years. Its also a classic example of how you get an 80's-style vibe without beating you over the head with in-jokey references and obvious homages.

Then I submit to you, you don't actually like horror at all. Nothing wrong with that, but to me it comes across like saying "I love metal but I hate loud guitars". Horror is an emotional reaction, its supposed to be shocking and a little bit transgressive. The current crop of milquetoast pg-13 crap is not horror, its a dismal, neutered facsimile that doesn't deserve the appelation.

Loud noises/jump-cuts/boo-scares are not horror, they are just payoffs to (when they work) successfully crafted passages of suspense. But suspense is just a dramatic device that is at home in a thriller or a drama as anything. Similarly invoking the supernatural does not connote horror either; Ghostbusters is not a horror picture because it has ghosts in it. (well maybe the remake...)

Sorry to rant, and please don't take any of this personally. It just makes me rage when real horror, the type that goes all the way back the theatre du grand guignol, gets summarily dismissed as "torture porn".

The Raid 1 & 2 are some of my favourite modern movies so I'm highly anticipating this, although most of the Netflix movies have been mediocre or bad so I'm keeping my hype in check.

I thought the trailer was decent and looks like it has some pretty disturbing scenes and a nice setting. I saw a brief glimpse of some melee fighting in the trailer and hope that this movie still manages to incorporate some well choreographed and well shot action sequences even though it's a horror movie.

The Guest was also a brilliant film. I saw that one in an empty cinema and loved every second of it.

To take the words of the director himself, Apostle is a "Survival Horror" and stays true to its roots of the influences mentioned in the OP.

There are a large number of subsets within Horror so to dismiss this film just because it fits within its genre is strange. You can like whatever you like but criticising something for being exactly how it should be is quite reductive.

I probably didn't make it clear enough, it's obviously personal preference. I do find torture porn lazy and kind of revolting (and not in an entertaining way) but I don't think all movies that have it are bad, if I did I wouldn't have said that the movie looks good.

No no, I got what you said hence my second sentence! I just found it strange that you dismissed the genre and compared it to another horror genre subset when all set out to dole their scares/shocks in different ways. Some find overt horror scary while some find the "less is more" approach better, it all boils down to different tastes which brings back the talk full circle lol.

"Torture Porn" is a pejorative term coined by some idiot journo to specifically to disparage the Saw movies and their imitators, since then its been expanded in misuse to cover any serious horror movie with scenes of violence and cruelty.

The whole premise is fundamentally wrong as the Saw movies weren't that extreme historically speaking, and bear more than a little resemblance to things like Vincent Price movies of the 70's (Dr Phibes, Theatre of Blood, Madhouse, etc.) where a maniac devised creative deaths for those that had wronged him.

Its just a bad term to use because as I've said this aspect has a long and storied history within the genre, and applying it retroactively would disparage many classics and ignores its roots in the Parisian Theatre Du Grand Guignol. Remember for a long time any graphic horror was kept in check by strangulating censorship, to the extent that stuff that feels pretty quaint today like Hammer's output in the 50's was considered disgusting at the time.

Sorry but if you want to talk what can be fairly described as "Torture Porn" you have to really scratch around on the fringes, I'm talking about unabashedly offensive stuff like Guinea Pig, Red Room, or (shudder) Niku Daruma. Saw movies? Not so much, because if you do that you may as well be throwing classics like Witchfinder General on the fire (pun intended).

scene really did seem to be there for cheap shock value alone - i.e. "torture porn") and there's gender politics angle one can probably read into the whole thing, if one is arsed to (I'm too lazy, beyond noticing some broad brush stokes, so to speak) but overall, I was expecting/hoping for more, given the hype-inducing trailer and the quotes in it ("You are not ready for Apostle," "A bone chilling folk horror tale." etc.).
