GOG and Blizzard bring Diablo 1 back from the dead, Warcraft 1 and 2 to follow

GOG and Blizzard have brought Diablo 1 back from the dead, and it's available - for the first time ever on digital distribution - right now (£7.89/$10)!

That's not all: the pair have signed a deal to bring Warcraft: Orcs & Humans, and Warcraft 2 back. No word on when; more information to follow soon.
Diablo 1 on GOG has two modes of play (it does not include the Hellfire expansion - there's "no information about Hellfire at this time", GOG told me). One is the warts-'n-all Diablo 1 from 1996, with classic Battle.net multiplayer matchmaking support.
The other is an updated "DX" version of Diablo 1 optimised for Windows 10.

The updated version doesn't have Battle.net support but does have DirectIP multiplayer.
Specifically, the updates include resolution and refresh-rate control (up to 4 and 8K); aspect ratio-correct upscaling; borderless windowed mode; and vertical synchronisation control. There are bug fixes too.

GerAlt-Right. Ciriously.
When you have nothing else and lost all talent to create new games you go after Nostalgia
What does this even mean? Are companies not allowed to release older games? Should they only be allowed to release new games?

I swear anti-remaster/re-release crowd is the dumbest of the dumb. Anyone stupid enough to believe that re-releasing the first Diablo is such a cost sink that it is preventing the release of a ne game is just that: stupid.

This a GREAT move and one we should all be grateful for and most importantly is not in anyway preventing Diablo 4 from coming out.

Blizzard right now is in a dire state regarding Diablo. Everyone waits for a remake o fD1 amd D2? as Example. With Immortal they got a huge backlash. With the last news they got a huge backlash etc. This is just a thing to get people back on board. Otherwise they would have NEVER thought about it. Not releasing it exclusively on their store/platform.

And no it is not a huge investment that why it is even worse. They do not even put some effort into getting customers back on board. They are betting on nostalgia.

Rereleasing Diablo caters to a niche.

There is no way Blizzard did this in the hopes of "getting people back on board."

Well that's pretty dang cool. Wish it was tied to Bnet so I didn't have to get ANOTHER account/launcher though. I'll consider it.

There are multiple Diablo projects in the works, so I don't get your posts.

They can say alot. When you have noting else than Immortal has finisher for a Blizzcon that was hyped up for Diablo fans by their community manager before than it is a very bleak future you look up ahead. PAth of Exile in terms of mechanics, features, content, content updates is probably decades ahead of the last Diablo entry.

I think he has a point if you look at Blizzard's moves. Starcraft 1 was buried in the sand until it became apparent that they failed to force Starcraft 2 to replace it as an esport. Now they're backpedaling and saying "hey guys, remember that timeless game? COME BACK!"

I think keeping old games available is great and takes no resources away from new releases. But their motives for when to, and when to not, make them available is apparent.

GOG release still has the original CD protection, lol. 10 years in the business and they still dont know how to do a proper repack.

I guess its a GOG release because they could have done the DirectDraw 3 wrapper to Direct3D ... 9-10-11-12?

Thinking of old games for nostalgia, totally off topic but bloody hell I wish EA would release some of their older 16 bit console games. I want Desert, Jungle and Urban Strike.

They did that in Playstation Portable back in 2006, it was called EA Replay. I guess it didn't sell well enough.

Also, I agree, it's highly intruiguing that you get this through GOG and not Blizzard? I don't care either way, but what are they getting at?? I'm stumped on this one!

Yeah. This is actually a big move, IMHO. I expected this to be released exclusively through their Battle.net client thing.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
Shame that the Hellfire expansion wasn't included. Still worth picking up for $10 - I'm happy it's on GOG and DRM free.

I have checked the game and the custom DirectDraw 3 to Direct3D9 wrapper uses the Zeus (nGlide) UI, so it could be his work. That makes me even happier than Diablo itself.

Anyone interested in the OG Diablo should check out the Belzebub mod.

It adds the Barbarian, Necromancer and Assassin classes, new spells, skill, items, spells and a bunch of other things.

Cool! I wonder if this (and/or Hellfire mod) work with the GOG release.

I have said this before: a D2 remaster will recoup its development costs in minutes of release, and need practically no marketing as every single gaming news site and social media will do it for you.

Blizzard. Print some money. It'll look good on that report you submit to Satan every 3 months.

I am shocked it’s on GOG. I don’t understand that at all. Has Blizzard ever sold their digital product through another party?

I love GOG so will buy it tonight but it’s a really weird situation.

I know port begging is frowned upon so I'm going to switch it up and not do that. But, if this did come to consoles, I'll have to decide switch to get it for.

I'm sure it will be great switchever platform you play it on, but I can't help but imagine a world in switch I could switch between playing this on my TV and in the comfort of my bed.

Well, nice try but that's still port begging. Anyway, the reviews on GOG say that it hasn't aged well.

But does it require the blizzard launcher?

Every game on GOG is DRM free. Not only does it not need Blizzard's launcher, it doesn't even need GOG's.
