What's a completely useless interesting fact you know

The sun and moon appear to be the same size. But the sun is 400 times bigger and coincidentally 400 times further away.

......

There's a town in the US that is (in)famous for having killed an elephant by hanging. The elephant, which was part of a circus, killed her trainer and it was decided they'd put her down by hanging because shooting didn't work. They used a large crane to hang her. The wounded elephant cooperated with her 'punishment' as she was very docile and well-trained. The first attempt failed when the chain she was hung from snapped, breaking her hip. Hundreds of people were watching and cheering as the elephant screamed out in pain, and finally died after another attempt. There's even a picture of it.

That's not a hundred percent true. There is a dog that can.

the peasant's revolt of 1381 was actually a huge success whereby the lower classes captured the king (Richard II) and had him agree to fundamental changes to feudalism and society as a whole. he went so far as to give the revolutionaries official documentation giving them his blessing...

... then as soon as the King returned back to the realm, he was informed by his council, treasury, and other advisors, that no, lol, he would not be doing any such thing. the revolt was quickly and violently squashed.

the king also died like a decade later in a dungeon.

feel like this knowledge could be useful for pseudo revolutionary types who always seem to be yelling "Kill the rich" these days.

Oh yeah Mary. Happened somewhere in Tennessee.

President James K. Polk (GOAT) had severe stones in his bladder when he was a young man. They did a surgery with no anesthesia into his testicles and below, cutting into his taint basically to get the stones out. He just drank some whisky and they went for it.

Needless to say, he never had children.

The Sun makes up 99% of all matter in our solar system. So the vast majority of gold in our solar system is floating somewhere in the sun.

Sailors used to wear these hats and they put these pom-poms on there, so when the sailors were out at sea and the waters were rough, they wouldn't bash their heads. It gave them extra protection, just by putting that little pom-pom on their hat

Anytime a store says "We are contributing $1,000,000 to charity", the amount of money they actually donate is close to zero.

What they do is add up all the donations customers toss in the donation coin box at checkout, and add up various fees suppliers pay for. Retailers will charge suppliers $1,000s for things like golf event schmoozing, trade shows, charity dinner galas, extra fees to be part of a supermarket's charity drive (ie. put your company logo on a poster).

Some buyers at retailer HQ have no shame too. They will literally ask an account manager if the company will donate to the retailer's charity. The people at the retailer's HQ get measured on how much charity funds they scoop up from suppliers.

Add it all up, and really all they did was compile funds from you and the suppliers and claim "it comes from them".

Typical restaurant pricing takes the cost of goods (COGS), and then you sell it for 4x that. The cheaper the product, the more you can safely multiply it.

For stuff you buy at the store, pricing and profits can be all over the place, but for clothing/textiles, it's often a 70% margin ($100 pair of jeans costs a store $30). Normal stuff you buy can often have a 1/3, 1/3, 1/3 pricing structure.

Sell for $10.00
Retailer cost $6.66
Supplier cost to make $3.33

One key exception is Costco. The profits they make are roughly only 10-15% of the regular price you pay. That's it. The only kinds of places that make less margin are wholesalers. Costco makes a good chunk of profits from banking all those membership fees right to the bottom line.

The remote controller and mobile phone "varial" side flip that happens when you trow it upwards is caused by physics, not your super slick ability.

'Perkele' (Pear-Kay-Lay with a rolled R) is a Finnish swear word that can indicate determination to see a difficult task through to its conclusion.

It's also the name of the rain and thunder god in Finnish mythology.

The main characters of the HBO show Rome, Titus Pullo and Lucius Vorenus are the names of actual soldiers in Ceasers army. The first scene they are in is embellished but Titus did break ranks to try kill as many Gauls as he could.

When the 8chan AMA desaster at THQ Nordic happened earlier this year, the twitter link was removed because I pressured someone who worked there into removing it due to how crazy the internet and especially ResetEra acted about it. No one will ever believe me.

Einstein couldn't speak fluently until after his ninth birthday. His parents thought he was mentally retarded

And that retard's name? Albert Einstein.

The thing about a mama bird not taking back a fallen baby bird if a person touches it isn't true. Touch baby birds all you want, all day.

When roosters open their beaks fully, their external auditory canals close so they become completly blocked off. This is so that they do not become deaf by their own crowing (basically an evolutionary earplug.) This only occurs in roosters, not in hens.
