I own a Pro and mine's quieter than my launch PS4, which isn't all that loud to begin with.

I think you might be overstating the issue.

Neither PS4 console has been anywhere near as bad as the launch PS3; especially as they approach EoL.

Yeah plus voiding any warranty. Just a waiting game at the moment till we know the final specs, price and performance of both consoles.

Sonys exclusives are a big draw, but it's not impossible for me to go with the XBSX.

PS5 is reportedly loud as fuck. And also gets really hot. It may be more expensive than the Series X, and more powerful.

I merely told you how my consoles sound. That doesn't invalidate anyone else's experience with their own console.

If you can acknowledge the variability in console manufacturing such that some consoles are loud, then you should also be able to acknowledge the converse fact that some are quiet.

If you're able to provide comprehensive data to support the point that a majority of PS4 consoles are loud, then please do so. Otherwise, any point you're trying to make is based on the same anecdotal evidence that doesn't provide nearly enough data to inform on the scale of the issue; or if it even is an issue.

Hundreds of posters online complaining about loud consoles, when over 100m consoles have been sold, doesn't really look that bad as a statistic. But if you spend all your time online being exposed to those few hundred posts, your perspective on the issue is likely to be warped.

Of course I can't produce comprehensive data - I can't poll 100 million PS4 users and ask them if their console is loud. Hundreds is a number I pulled out of my ass. For all I know it could thousands or millions. All I know is that I'm not the only one and there have been numerous reports of the issue existing. The fact that the PS4's fan noise has become a meme and a joke among Sony's hardware quality in the PlayStation topic speaks volumes of the issue.

But this is where my beef is. MS took the feedback to heart about the X360's lousy cooling and overheating issues and provided next-gen consoles who (in the majority) produce no heating problems at all. The question is: Will Sony follow suite, or did they learn fuck-all from the PS4's fan noise?

This is my belief as well. We can only hope that the Lockheart will do so poorly that MS will be forced to discontinue it soon and have Series X as the sole next-gen system.

I also hope that MS will receive so much negative feedback about Lockheart from the devs that they will decide not to release it at all.

My PS4Pro sounded like a jet engine when it first arrived. After swapping the thermal pads for better ones and paste it actually sounds MUCH MUCH better.
There is also a fan mod that can be made but that i didn't do.

I wish I was techy like tht to switch the thermal pads but I get scared ima mess it up as simple as it seems fir some ppl.

You only need to Google "loud X1X console" to see just how prevalent the occurrence of loud Xbox console is too. And that's expected, because the Hovis method MS uses creates an additional degree of variability in the console acoustics and power consumption.

The fact that people meme something in a closed community doesn't really mean anything in the grand scheme of things, and given just how many PS4 have been sold versus Xboxes, it stands to reason that statistically there's will be a higher absolute number of users with abnormally loud consoles, even if the percentage of loud consoles overall was lower than for xbox. So you need to look at things in perspective.

The core point, however, is that memes on Internet forums and anecdotal evidence of defective consoles, doesn't prove that Sony is shit at designing console cooling solutions (which is your original point I was arguing against). It just means that some unfortunate folks were unlucky in their console purchase, which is inescapable regardless of the cooling system and console accoustic performance design.

It's an issue of manufacturing variability, not poor design.

They both have to go down more in price, could still sell approaching 20 million more.

What about for watching UHD movies etc? It's kind of addressing the effects rather than the problem. Plus I spent a fair bit of money on my audio setup.

I disagree with this, actually.

I don't think Lockhart will sell well at all. And while I agree that people don't care about resolution, because the average consumer doesn't have a clue, they will care about having the best console experience.

I do think the concept of Lockhart is fundamentally flawed. A next-gen console is by definition an upgrade. So the idea of a weaker upgrade just seems like a solution that's undermining its own existence.

I think it'll sell as well as the 20GB PS3s did; that is to say poorly. And will only become less desirable as the XSX comes down in price.

There's also the factor to considers that Sony having a single console SKU will potentially have more flexibility in their ability to price their console as it moves towards EoL, because they won't have to concern themselves with trying to keep a value differential between the premium and value console SKUs.

As long as the CPU and storage system isn't too far behind, how could a slower GPU hold anything back. In your opinion, PC is limited to the capabilities of the weakest GPU available?

Lockhart should still move the baseline forward from last gen in most areas, unless it uses a 5400rpm spinner and a CPU that is 1/4 the power of the larger consoles. Games will be scaled down, not up. In MS's position, even lack of RT shouldn't really amount to much, it will be a long time before RT is a standard on the PC (too many old cards that don't have it), and MS and third-party games will be looking to support PC as well.

They're obviously referencing the devkits. Which likely aren't even final hardware at this point (probably still an overclocked 5700xt).

So folk should be able to relax a little at least.

If they're truly shooting for $599 price points they'll have plenty of fat in the budget to have a large enough chassis/fans to have adequate cooling within reasonable accoustic performance limits.
