The US has been proxy warring Russia through Iran while Russia and China have been working with Iran together. The US also has a bunch of sanctions against Russia, China has none. What makes you think Russia will side with the US?

That was one of the 3 points raised by BIll Gates, that vaccine production facilities could be built in advance and even though different vaccines in works require different facilities, that is still one hell of a smart investment, given the impact of the virus.

China likely lies about victims (just instinctively reducing the figures), but lying about stopping the virus would be too much.

+77k is actually good news, as it is around 10% of active cases, which means doubling every 10 days, which is pretty damn good, vs doubling every 3 days that we had before.

I am Jewish myself and I will say that these chassids are living in their own world and becoming a danger to the community at large. They will only listen to their Rabbi, who only follows the Torah.

Now not all orthodox are like this and many are following the rules, but there are still those that think relegion puts them above the virus, even while the outbreak is ravaging through their community. I think 1 in 7 infections in Israel came from one orthodox community.

And with passover coming up in about a week I fear its going to get worse not better.

I'm always interested in seeing a modern jew opinion on the orthodox community. I'm currently watching a series called Unorthodox and I watched the whole of Shtisel as well. They live in a whole different world indeed and remind me of Amish people.

I don't know the numbers but I know that there are large outbreaks in the orthodox communites in NYC and the surrounding area's. No numbers but I would think that the bigger hotspots are the area's with these communities. Their lifestye is like Italy x10. Lots of old people, large famalies, usually in small spaces. Its not uncommon for families of 6-12. And most of life revolves around large groups of people in small closed places. Perfect conditions for the virus.

But these kinds of estimates depend so much on future development and make so many assumptions. It's easy to be wrong there.

We all know Japan has a "military", they have tanks, aircraft, etc even though the constitution forbids it. It just depends on how you interpret this. They even re-interpreted this a few years ago, to give the military more power. There are numerous parts in the constitution talking about protecting the public welfare, or lives, etc you could interpret things in certain ways to restrict movement.

Secondly, they could just, you know, amend the constitution. It is one thing to get support for amending article 9, it should be easier to get support to make a state of emergency clause or something.

Well, with the SDF, you have the GHQ to blame for ordering Japan to form a defense and peace keeping-oriented armed forces during the occupation (although I'm not saying Japan never would have set up a self-defense force/army had it not happened otherwise).

Anyway, I certainly wouldn't want the government to just willy nilly reinterpret things on a whim to give themselves new powers. They can pass new laws if they want to, but that is hard without support of the citizens and I don't think that exists currently.

I don't know/think that ALL of the excess deaths are COVID-19 related, but I have to imagine a large portion of them are.
