On the gameplay itself, it looks virtually identical to the first game. You wait 5 years to end up playing pretty much the exact same game, but with a bad plot and an ending for the characters many won't find satisfying. Kind of a waste, but also to be expected. TLoU really didn't need a sequel. TLoU2 only proves that, by how much they've had to twist and turn it into horrible shapes to get something of a follow-up out of it.
I kinda disagree. A sequel is fine, but the natural manner would be either to completely focus on someone else than Joel And Ellie, though giving info on what happens with them through notes. Or as I imagined years ago, that "The Last of Us" would work much like "Final Fantasy", each title at least somewhat being self-contained experiences. So my idea was originally that TLoU2 would be about some sort of disaster befalling the planet and following the last people making their exodus and attempting at terraforming other planets. So basically each game would be a take on the human condition and human relations in post-apocalyptic scenarios. I think this works really well, especially considering that Naughty Dog has been somewhat struggling within their general third person shooter-adventure genre for a while.
I won't lie and say I wasn't hyped by the TLoU II reveal trailer, but that a follow-up that included Ellie and Joel would struggle in many aspects and that with Naughty Dog's track record on Uncharted, I didn't feel like they'd do very great in a follow-up scenario. Then again, people were so invested in Ellie and Joel, that they kinda had to do a sequel about them to capitalize on the TLoU brand.
