The PS5 Reveal Has Put All the Pressure Back on Microsoft - Ryan McCaffrey

I agree but last 3 months have been omg launch exclusives are the most important thing ever. Mario's, halo and 9-9-99 are the exception. Hey people going to talk lots of shit of all the big hitters at launch and Microsoft with cross generation only should eat some crow for fun.
Exactly. If you can show gamers the future of what they can experience on the PS5, then they'll come even if the actual launch lineup isn't that great. Nobody was buying a PS4 at launch because of Knack, but they were buying it at launch because soon they'll be playing Kingdom Hearts III and Uncharted 4.

I am a diehard Xbox fan. Last gen was so bad that I considered heavily to pick up a PS5. After the announcement of the PS5, and a lineup that has only 1 game I'd want to play, I think I'll pass for now.

Sony had an okay PS5 event, but what really disappointed me was that they set the bar so low for the launch that if Microsoft was to show 5 minutes of the new Halo gameplay, it would do more for Xbox fans like myself than anything Sony did for me as a neutral. It would take an incredible misstep from Microsoft to not top Sony's conference.

I don't think PS5 event was 10/10 show.

I don't see fully designed PS5 games much better than Flight simulator/Halo infinite & Hellblade 2. (Ok, Horizon in terms of environment but it's not in game, character model is not more impressive than Halo infinite imo and not match Hellblade 2)
Guerilla Games dont seems to have sorted out their facial animation yet. The girls face looks like a beefed up UFC fighter now . Kindda weird ...

It was $100 more for less than six months. It's been at price parity since can and the One S has actually has retailed less than PS4 in the US for most of the gen.

Ask Nintendo how being weaker than all of them has worked out.
Nintendo isn't a direct competitor and isn't fighting for the same gaming market as Sony and Microsoft, I think you know that. Nintendo themselves have said that.

One S came out 3 years after the xbox one. At which point the PS4 already had hold in the NA market. Also the price drop after removing the kinect happened 8 months after launch. Not a big difference from what you said but still wrong. It dropped further a little while later but this was pre One X so any sane gamer would still buy the more powerful console in the ps4.

Why though? The PS5 reveal wasn't that good.
Sony is under pressure. They talked about "generational leap", "no loading times", "paradigm shift".

and they haven't shown anything of this.

GT7 has pop-ins issues, ratchet and clank has hidden loading screens, none of the ingame gameplay looked like a generational leap. It all could be done on PS4.
So, Yeah I think Sony is under pressure, they have to show the generation leap.

IMO releasing games on PC hurt them. But Microsoft has to come out all guns blazing. We need competition. If they cannot make impact in first couple of years then I think it will be repeat of this gen.

I always thought Aloy was a more muscular Kristin Bell.

Y'all see it right?

nothing from a technical level shown yesterday can't be done with the Series X.

And? All ps4 games can run on xbox one. Doesn't mean having exclusives isn't a huge deal.
It doesn't matter if the xbox one can run FF7:remake or Uncharted if they have to wait over a year to get it on their platform or if they never get it at all.

Ofcourse the pressure is there for Microsoft. Not because of Sony's reveal but because they got absolutely destroyed this gen.
Unless Microsoft have an amazing show in July, this gen will be no different. Other than the usual suspects are we expecting anything from July's show?

What loading screen on Ratchet and Clank?

Xbox is getting FF7 but

We havent had this confirmed, could be only coming to pc.
But let's assume that's true, The fact is having specs that can run it didn't stop them from having to wait a year after release to get it on their platform.

I'll never understand people downplaying how popular the Halo franchise is. I'd argue it's STILL the biggest franchise between MS and Sony. Zelda, Mario, Pokemon and Mario Kart are the only exclusive franchises I'd consider bigger in 2020.

I'd grant you that point in 2007 but the arse has fallen out of the franchise post-Bungie. Halo 3 was a beast at, what, 15 million units? Halo 4 dropped to, a still respectable, 8 million-ish and now Halo 5 sold like 5 million units. There's at least half a dozen Sony first party titles that have handily outsold it, and I wouldn't bet against TLOU2 and Ghost of Tsushima adding to that list.

Yes Halo is still their top selling first party game, but it's hardly the draw it once was.

It was the most watched stream in YouTube history and the general internet buzz for PS5 is really positive. Sony also showed a lot of exclusive games.

I think it's safe to say that there is some pressure on MS to deliver next time after their disappointing third party showing. I think they have a good shot at delivering something equally as impressive. Hopefully Halo blows away everything else that we've seen from next gen so far.

Yeah there is huge pressure to answer to a 2022 game (horizon) , a quick spin off (the spider man game), a.......ratchet game, a gran turismo game with no release date, a sackboy game that looked like an average ps4 game and a ps3 remake that we only saw cutscenes from. Add to this all the amazing timed exclusive 3rd parties like godfall, that Tokyo game and more and I see no way that MS can have a better show than this «jaw dropping» Sony show.😂😂😂

He must be referring to the 1 second you spend in the rift before landing in the next world.

Which, I think, ignores that when not in the "on rails" sections it looks like you have some choice in interacting with the portal.

Sony sold more than twice as many PS4s as MS did XBox Ones.

It's going to be fascinating to see how monstrously big Halo Infinite is when there's 60 million XBox Ones, and 125 million gaming PCs on the market, along with Series X at launch.

People are sleeping on Halo big time. Infinite is gonna be big time.

That's what Gears 5 said. RIP.

But hey it's 50/50.... a game like Sea of Thieves has found its niche on PC so I ain't betting.

When I was watching the PS5 stream on YouTube, there was over 1.1m people livestreaming it. The XSX first look reveal has 1.3m total views. Yeh, I would say MS needs to do better.

If xsx undercuts ps5 and Sony don't have a worthy equivalent to GamePass, then it's a pretty simple decision to go xbox for me.
It doesn't even have to undercut the PS5.

PS5 + 2 Sony Games = X + 140
XSX + 2 Microsoft Games = X (with 1 month Game Pass included)

Of course after that month you have to pay if you want to continue playing them, but if we are talking about how much money i have to spend at the beginning, X sounds better than x + 140.

It was over 2.5 million on the YouTube livestream by about 15 mins in. More when you add the other 4 or 5 language versions.

I can't see MS beeing under extrem pressure, but pressure nevertheless.

They might turn this thing all around by announcing their exclusives.

Don't belive the thing is over.

I usually buy both consoles at launch.

With the RTX 3000 series releasing a couple months before, Xbox having it's new Halo be a launch title, along with Game Pass....

There's no way I'm going to shell out another $500-$600 this time around for just a standalone expansion of Spiderman, which is the only launch title I'm interested in. I will probably buy it 6 months - 1 year after once it has a more decent exclusive library.

In other words, no bear was poked.

Whether you like the games or not, the mindshare is absolutely huge. It's all I ever see in social media.

You make fun of the memes but it also adds to mindshare.

I don't understand how anyone who witnessed how Sony steamrolled MS in 2013 since the January "Antonio Banderas gif" presentation and basically secured the generation in the bag at E3, can think that Sony's presentation two days ago was in any way comparable to that complete and utter victory.

The only pressure on MS is to not fuck it up majestically like they did at E3 2013. They're not going to win because there's no winning against PlayStation, and whoever says there's a chance for anyone is a bare-faced liar. But they can do very well, if the console is priced reasonably.

Bear woke up and struck back HARD with a vengeance? LOL. How can you show your bias more clearly?

Really. I thought it was shit. Console launches are so weak. Nothing new and exciting confirmed for launch. The only reason people are excited is that they want that new console experience. I'll probably get one for that and then let it collect dust for years. It seems like they have learned that games don't matter at launch so they try to hold back their big guns for ~ 6 months when the supply of consoles hits the point where you can find reams of them at Costco.

It's fascinating how many folks seem to so much of the PS5 event lineup is actually PS5 exclusive. Generally if Sony ain't publishing it, it won't be exclusive. Games are too expensive these days for publishers to limit their reach.

Tha's true for major games. But Sony (as did MS) showed mostly Indies. Indies can be bought fairly cheap if a company needs to bolster their line up since they don't sell that well without heavy marketing.

I doubt many of those 3rd party Indies will stay exclusive to PS though - Sony don't need them. The ones MS has bought will probably stay on xbox - MS does need them...

Flight Simulator! lol I can't believe that is being used in list wars now.... How many flight hours do you have ace?

The last Halo anyone cared about was Reach. Hellblade - wouldn't even be mentioned if not for MS exclusivity and that'll be out 2024 - generation half over.

No the PS5 wasn't a 10/10 show - for you. But MS screwed up theirs badly, all Sony needed to do was not screw up and that's what they did.

Never interrupt the enemy while they're making a mistake - that's Sony's strategy and that's why it's up to MS to fix their lack of games and messaging if they can before July.

Ryan is taking the correct position. Microsoft needs to show compelling AAA nextgen games. No indie nonsense, no weird cartoony We Happy Few clones, and no AA Gamepass shovel wear. Everything shown from their first party need to be on par with the Hellblade 2 trailer. There needs to be no doubt that what the viewer is seeing is nextgen. Microsoft knows what the expectations are given the praise of the Unreal 5 demo. That's the quality that needs to shown.

That's a totally unrealistic expectation. MS doesn't have the resources to achieve that - unless it's all "representative of xsex" PC based trailers - in which case they'll be torn to shreds for releasing a console that no one has seen a game running on.

They'll have a couple of 1st party games - Halo and Forza, and the rest will be 3rd party/Indies ... if they're desperate they'll show flight sim lol

Let's see, MS will show off Forza 8, which apparently is going to be a showcase.
They will show Halo Infinate, which I hope, and expect, will look amazing.
They will show off Fable, and considering PG are doing it, it will look amazing.
Ninja Theory will show more of Hellblade 2, which looks nuts.
Flight SIM will get a gig, and that is insane looking, and Sony doesnt have anything to compete with that genre wise.
On top of that, possible new games from their other first party games, and whatever other exclusives they have been working on.
Put that with their initial show, and in totality it isnt really going to hard to match or excel what Sony did.

So you're saying MS will - at this big xsex 1st party reveal - show PC Sims?

If flight sim is shown - MS are in trouble and getting desperate to show anything... that isn't a console "game" and if that's what they've built it'll be a deader franchise than ACES left it.

Xbox is in a much better state now than what it was at the at the start of this generation that's for sure. Still, it's going to be hard for Microsoft to top that showing from Sony, even if we're comparing first party games. Come July, Microsoft will need to show a ton of games, and a wide variety of them, if they ever want a show comparable to Sony.

This is obviously a sarcastic piece. The PS5 actually relieved alot of preasure from MS. The games shown did not blow anyone away and the system is HUMONGOUS.

I didnt like sony's presentation because not all the games will run at 60 fps, I dont want another crappy 30 fps generation.

My recommendation

Build a PC.

Consoles are the not the platform where you expect 60FPs with all titles. Only PCs offer you that and can nail 60FPs by adjusting the settings. Something that you can't do with consoles for the most part.

The market doesn't care what Xbox fanboys think. Those who follow and gauge social media reactions and engagement know PS5 is generating the kind of attention that Xbox will have a hard time matching.

There's a lot of pressure for the Xbox July event to turn heads.

I think they can have a good first party showing , all the indies are done.

You saw how much of those where in Sony's showing.

They can exclusively focus on their first party games.

What other chips do they have? ND and Sucker Punch are releasing two games in the next month. Sony literally has revealed games by all of there other studios at this event.

According to Shinobi, MS has plenty to show and they've acquired like 7 studios in the past few years

Are you joking?

They've said nothing so far about new features, backwards compatibility and/or cross-gen enhancements, PSVR or really anything that's not directly a game.

We've seen nothing at all from Santa Monica, Bend, San Diego, San Mateo, London Studio, Media Molecule or PixelOpus. They may not have launch titles but they're certainly working on shit. We've had nothing substantial from Japan Studio (just the Playroom and Demon's Souls which will be mostly down to BluePoint) who are a multi-team Studio as are Guerrilla who are known to have a second project on the go.

We've seen nothing from a whole bunch of traditional second party studios nor have we seen any of the significant third party exclusives we typically see from the likes of Atlus and From, And sure Naughty Dog and Sucker Punch have PS4 games coming out imminently, but both Studios also have other projects.

So, yeah I think PlayStation still has a few chips to play.

And I totally expect Xbox Studios to have plenty to show us and I'm absolutely looking forward to it. Can't wait.

What' i can't wait to see if all the people eat crow that were saying:

1. Wait for sony and them to show true next gen games
2. The low end xbox are going to hold games back
3. The SSD in PS5 will allow for new gameplay types previously not thought possible

When MS reveals their first party titles and many look better visually then what Sony showed, i'm expecting a healthy dose of crow served to a bunch of people. At least 1 or 2 games I'm expecting to have visuals close to what epic showed with the unreal 5 demo, and better use of ray tracing to augment the visuals then only adding reflections to some surfaces. We will know in a few weeks.
