The PS5 Reveal Has Put All the Pressure Back on Microsoft - Ryan McCaffrey

Come out swinging with a fantastic new FABLE and all it well :goog_hugging_face:
Ha. Fable will not sell in this modern era, it was never a huge franchise to begin with....Fable got most of it's hype from Molyneux's proppings and delusions of grandeur. Molyneux is the quintessential hypeman. Never forget, Milo....

When MS reveals their first party titles and many look better visually then what Sony showed, i'm expecting a healthy dose of crow served to a bunch of people. At least 1 or 2 games I'm expecting to have visuals close to what epic showed with the unreal 5 demo, and better use of ray tracing to augment the visuals then only adding reflections to some surfaces. We will know in a few weeks.

Um. MS already had a reveal remember? And the games looked average (even while running on PC) - that's the capability of these machines.

Don't kid yourself that MS's studios are going to suddenly produce anything better than the 3rd parties - they're all using unreal and DX, so what you saw is what you'll get.

You should tell the witcher series that. All those games took what fable did and built it on it. If they modernize the game there is no reason it can't be good. Ill give playground the benefit of the doubt they defeated gt as the best racing series with horizon who the fuck would of thought that.

Is the "They poked the bear and now they are striking HARD with a Vengence" GAFs new "They shot themselves in the foot?"
I don't know about you but I know for a fact the OP is an expert on bears, and understands bear culture very well.

...hang on, that last bit could mean something entirely different.

no, their First party games will be shown in July. It's already confirm.
And I mean did you see Hellblade II and Project Mara? Looked better than anything on PS5 so far.
Also flight simulator says hi. One of the best looking games ever.

That was the 3rd party and Indie showing.

July is first party showing.

I thought Scorn and The Medium looked great as exclusive Indie games.

Sony's show was a 7/10 at best, MS is far from quaking in their boots. The one solid move Sony played is continuing to play price chicken.

These takes are extremely premature.

Halo and fable need to look great in their next showing. Pressure was always gonna go back to MS if Sony's reveal was good or not. I thought it was disappointing overall but still decent

Go take a survey. Regular people loved it yeah.
Tha's true for major games. But Sony (as did MS) showed mostly Indies. Indies can be bought fairly cheap if a company needs to bolster their line up since they don't sell that well without heavy marketing.

I doubt many of those 3rd party Indies will stay exclusive to PS though - Sony don't need them. The ones MS has bought will probably stay on xbox - MS does need them...
Flight Simulator! lol I can't believe that is being used in list wars now.... How many flight hours do you have ace?

The last Halo anyone cared about was Reach. Hellblade - wouldn't even be mentioned if not for MS exclusivity and that'll be out 2024 - generation half over.

No the PS5 wasn't a 10/10 show - for you. But MS screwed up theirs badly, all Sony needed to do was not screw up and that's what they did.

Never interrupt the enemy while they're making a mistake - that's Sony's strategy and that's why it's up to MS to fix their lack of games and messaging if they can before July.
That's a totally unrealistic expectation. MS doesn't have the resources to achieve that - unless it's all "representative of xsex" PC based trailers - in which case they'll be torn to shreds for releasing a console that no one has seen a game running on.

They'll have a couple of 1st party games - Halo and Forza, and the rest will be 3rd party/Indies ... if they're desperate they'll show flight sim lol
So you're saying MS will - at this big xsex 1st party reveal - show PC Sims?

If flight sim is shown - MS are in trouble and getting desperate to show anything... that isn't a console "game" and if that's what they've built it'll be a deader franchise than ACES left it.
Can someone please stop this guy? Is this a bot or what's going on?

Five posts in a row. And only real pathetic console warring and plain bullshit. MS doesn't have resources LOL WTF is this?

I think he consumed too many toad mushrooms.

Y'all see it right?
Do you want to build a snow man?

Exactly. That proves nothing stopped them from putting it on Xbox, but they didn't even consider it worth the effort.
Atlas is an idiotic company that is known for being extremely stingy with ports and hating money, so what they do is pretty irrelevant to the grand picture.

SE has released many titles on Xbox, but DQ is a very Japanese-centric series.

I know we are all just talking and have our opinions but I just don't see this at all.

Gran Turismo is a huge franchise. Ratchet and Clank is really popular and amazingly high quality (except for the weird experiments at the back end of PS3). Horizon sold 10 million copies. Spider-Man was one of the most popular games this gen. Demons Souls is a clear play at the hardcore fans. I'm watching the DF rundown and these games look great. People are going to be happy with this.

To me, the reveal showed that Sony is not just working to keep their enormous existing customers but trying to expand the audience. This gen IMO they leaned a bit too hard on gritty third person AAs but now they want to give people more.

It was a great show and MS has a lot of work to do. Can the same company that needed six years to put out a piece of shit Crackdown 3 compete with this? Sure but they are way behind.

What' i can't wait to see if all the people eat crow that were saying:

1. Wait for sony and them to show true next gen games
2. The low end xbox are going to hold games back
3. The SSD in PS5 will allow for new gameplay types previously not thought possible

1 and 3 already happened. Are you really that tied to your brand that you can't see that?

Atlus hates money? That's their reason. Ok, Jan.

There are more examples. Disgaea, Atelier, most Tales games, Sword Art Online, etc.

Then there are games that come to PlayStation and only IF they sell enough copies, will be it be deemed worthwhile to port an Xbox version at a much later date. Games like Nier Automata and World of Final Fantasy fall into this category.

Dude that wasn't a reveal. that was an inside xbox event ( the same event they have a number of times per year) that got overhyped. Not a single first party title, and for the most part very few 3rd party titles were shown there. It was mostly indie and small studio games.

Don't kid yourself that MS's studios are going to suddenly produce anything better than the 3rd parties - they're all using unreal and DX, so what you saw is what you'll get.
Get your head out of your ass. Can't wait to see you eat crow. All of a sudden you are saying unreal isn't the next coming of god when its on Xbox and not a tech demo running on PS5? pathetic.

Are people actually impressed with yesterdays showing?

I have a hard time imaging Microsoft being particularily scared after that show.
These fanboys work themselves Up over the most minor things. fucking tired of who is better argument

At this point the Xbox consoles are basically a standardized PC without the extra positives and negatives that come with typical PC ownership.

Which is not a problem, really, it's just the logical conclusion of the console market. The only reason Sony hasn't started the dual release strategy like Microsoft is because Microsoft makes Windows, and if you're Gaming on a PC, there's like a 98% chance you're doing so within Windows.
You need to read up on PSN for PC.

Are you joking?

They were obviously going to say that no matter what was shown. The show was an absolute onslaught of huge games.

He didn't even mention Demon's Souls, Spider-Man (about as big of a game franchise in the industry today) or Ratchet and Clank (the most impressive next-gen title shown yet).

1 and 3 already happened. Are you really that tied to your brand that you can't see that?
1 and 3 have NOT happened yet.

1. Sony haven't showed "true Next gen games" yet when TLOU2 looks better then everything they showed for PS5. Ratchet looked good, but for the most part what they showed didn't look better than PS4 titles outside of the fast level change portals
3. what new gameplay type did the SSD allow for? The only game i saw was Ratchet and clank doing something interesting, but not something that couldn't be done on the new Xbox.

Seriously there are 2 - 3 games out of what sony showed that are true first party exclusives coming to PS5 this year. The timed exclusives don't count imo. Which of these games outside of Ratchet and clank showed that 1 and 3 happened?

  1. Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales (PS5 Exclusive, PS Studios)
  2. Project Athia (PS5 Exclusive)
  3. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart (PS5 Exclusive, PS Studios)
  4. Stray (PS5 Timed Console Exclusive, Available on PC)
  5. Returnal (PS5 Exclusive, PS Studios)
  6. Destruction AllStars (PS5 Exclusive, PS Studios)
  7. Sackboy A Big Adventure (PS5 Exclusive, PS Studios)
  8. Oddworld Soulstorm (PS4/PS5 Timed Console Exclusive, Available on PC)
  9. Kena: Bridge of Spirits (PS5 Timed Console Exclusive, Available on PC)
  10. Goodbye Volcano High (PS4/PS5 Timed Console Exclusive, Available on PC)
  11. GhostWire: Tokyo (PS5 Timed Console Exclusive, Available on PC)
  12. JETT: The Far Shore (PS4/PS5 Timed Console Exclusive, Available on PC)
  13. Godfall (PS5 Timed Console Exclusive, Available on PC)
  14. Gran Turismo 7 (PS5 Exclusive, PS Studios)
  15. Solar Ash (PS4/PS5 Timed Console Exclusive, Available on PC)
  16. Demon's Souls (PS5 Exclusive, PS Studios)
  17. DEATHLOOP (PS5 Timed Console Exclusive, Available on PC)
  18. Little Devil Inside (PS4/PS5 Timed Console Exclusive, Available on PC)
  19. Horizon Forbidden West (PS5 Exclusive, PS Studios)
  20. Astro's Playroom (PS5 Exclusive, PS Studios)

You have no objectivity, and you are asking me about brands? This is what its going to comedown to. How many first party titles will be available this year, and how good they look. It's the visuals for titles at launch:

  • Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales (PS5 Exclusive, PS Studios)
  • Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart (PS5 Exclusive, PS Studios)
  • Gran Turismo 7 (PS5 Exclusive, PS Studios)
going against:
  • Halo infinite
  • Forza 8
  • Whatever else MS has coming from the 14 studios

If you paid attention to Atlus you would know they basically hate money with how they don't port games. Persona 5 would do gangbusters on Switch, still nothing. P4G is still stuck on the fucking Vita. Square Enix is also rather terrible about this though they've been getting better. Still no FFT : WOTL port though. Sony's handheld exclusive versions of games are cursed.

The games you cite are Japanese-centric, and don't fit with a lot of the Xbox market. Microsoft tried early on with the 360 to get a fanbase for JRPGs going with titles like Tales of Vesperia, Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey so it's not like they didn't try with more niche stuff. They must not have sold enough to invest in getting such titles in the future.

So you're saying MS will - at this big xsex 1st party reveal - show PC Sims?

Umm, its an XSX SIM as well. Whats wrong with sims?
I mean GT is considered "The Real Driving Simulator "
Flight SIM will sell a bucket load, and its a game that Sony doesnt have an equivalent for.

The market doesn't care what Xbox fanboys think. Those who follow and gauge social media reactions and engagement know PS5 is generating the kind of attention that Xbox will have a hard time matching.

There's a lot of pressure for the Xbox July event to turn heads.
The mindshare in favor of Playstation has been cemented into it's userbase over the course of this gen.
Sony still has TLOU2 and GoT. PR for PS5 will start now that the event has taken place.

MS has a massive uphill battle. Only this time, they are standing on their feet instead of laying flat on their faces.

Flight Sim has never been on consoles. I can't think of a single game of its type on a console, ever. Something like Pilotwings is probably the closest...

Still it looks great, and on PC, people will be playing it for many years.

Seriously there are 2 - 3 games out of what sony showed that are true first party exclusives coming to PS5 this year.

The console likely will release in November. This year consists of a couple months at most.

Any games that don't come out the same two months of launch don't count? Moving goalposts here.

We get Spider-Man day one. Pretty sure others like Godfall. And of course games like Assassin's Creed Valhalla.

Likely we will see most of the games shown spread out during the console's first year. Hopefully, Ratchet comes out first quarter 21.

You are trying really hard to downplay PlayStation exclusives. You'd think you'd learn it always backfires, generation after generation.

Your first and second paragraphs contradict each other. You talk of sequels and remakes as the highlight, then claim the reveal shows they're trying to expand their audience. You expand your audience by showing something new and exciting, at least compared to your normal selection.

They didn't show any games that weren't expected from them, or that truly raised the hype meter from what came before. There's still a lot of time for them to unveil more games before launch, and give better showcases to the games revealed here, but right now they're just doing okay not great.

I guess I was so underwhelmed by the presentation that "Microsoft better come with it" never even crossed my mind. I think it has been such a slow and long burn that I just really don't care anymore. I'll probably get hyped a week or two out from release but this drip feed of anticlimactic information has had the reverse effect on me.

Ok. Well, Japanese games are a huge portion of the industry. If Xbox can't convince them to even bother porting their games to Xbox when nothing is stopping them, they are fighting an uphill battle.

What other publishers worldwide are just choosing to put their games on everything except PlayStation? I can think of only one - Microsoft (and even they put some of their games on PlayStation).

I did give them credit during the 360 days with trying to support JRPGs with Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon (I played both games on my 360). But, that was a decade ago now and it does very little now that they threw in the towel so quickly.

Are diehard Xbox guys losing patience with Xbox? Is McCaffrey a traitor? Will Xbox's event in July change everything and make articles like this age poorly? Let's see.

Xbox has been poking a very quiet bear for a while now. Yesterday, that bear woke up and struck back HARD and with a vengeance. How will Xbox respond? Do they have the ammo to make a counterattack? It should be interesting.
Oh my fucking god get over yourself. "Traitor", "bear struck back HARD with a vengeance", "counterattack". Do you guys ever say this shit out loud and hear yourselves.

McCaffrey is saying what any logical person would be thinking (which given he, like you, loves to console war is kind of astonishing). It's not some magic revelation the situation MS and Sony are in right now. The fact MS dropped the ball with their messaging and over-hyping of their last event doesn't change the fact that when it comes to actually having a first party event, they simply haven't done it yet. Saying "boy they're under pressure now!" is the most "no shit" thing ever.

And here I was thinking that the general consensus (on gaf) on the PS5 reveal would be pretty good lol.
I saw a pretty great line-up with great gfx and most of all diverse.
Can't wait what MS has to offer next month. Sure they have a ton of goodness as well to share.

I have only money for one console for the coming years, and while I lean more to the PS5, I am sure it will be a touch decision. MS offers great services and has a lot of studio's building new games for them as well. Choices, choices

Insomniac's Spider-Man isn't even a technical game franchise till another game releases, yet you're saying it's a goliath in the industry? It's mid tier until it has multiple proven games.

I'm talking day 1 - end of year is launch window. People want to get the new console and play something that shows some advantage over last gen ( and not just 4K) .You don't think MS is also going to have timed exclusives? But I seem to recall sony fans downplaying timed exclusives as not being a factor until now. Funny how that works when it's sony doing it to supplement a lack of first party.

Anyway, Godfall didn't show well at the conference, it looked mediocre imo. Assassin's creed if multiplat. Wait, i thought Ratchet was a launch title?? You telling me only spiderman is a launch title from first party?

I really want a blue dragon sequel and a few more japanese style RPG's. they will already get support from capcom and square and a few others. I wish sega had more for the console market then they have in recent years.

You have no objectivity, and you are asking me about brands?

I'm ignoring the new goalposts that you introduced above. I suspect engaging on that would be a futile endeavour.

In the post I responded to your 1 and 3 were:
1. Wait for sony and them to show true next gen games
3. The SSD in PS5 will allow for new gameplay types previously not thought possible

So in response:
1. You might not think that games that are native 4K with raytracing are not nextgen. I disagree and most would. TLOU part 2 is 1440p/30fps on the PS4, it's a fabuous effort but it does not look better than many of the games shown ....... unless you've only watched the original 1080 stream with the shitty bitrate.

3. The SSD allowed R&C to move between full worlds, with high quality assets and huge draw distances in about a second. That is just not even close to possible without the SSD. At 9Gb/s they're filling the entire RAM in under 2 seconds. It would take minutes to do that with a mechanical drive. The jumping between multiple highly detailed environments in a short section would just not be playable otherwise.

Everything in this presentation was running directly on a PS5. I haven't said a thing about the capabilities of the Series X here, we don't know as they haven't showed us anything running on it yet, but I'm looking forward to the day that they do.

Your suggestion that we haven't seen anything nextgen is absurd, but if you want to keep your blinders on then suit yourself. I'm looking forward to seeing what all the platforms can do.

Seems to be a concerted effort by xbox fans to downplay the reveal. The internet has spoken the World loved the reveal. Get over it
It's called applying the same logic sony fans apply to Xbox titles. You can't really argue that there are a very small number of first party sony titles, and even smaller number of PS5 games that look like PS4 games shown. I think once people get past the initial wow excitement, we will see more level heads look at what was shown with a critical eye.

No contradiction. This gen they threw out one so-so remake of the original Ratchet & Clank halfway through the gen. This gen they're leading with the franchise. That's a difference. Note they did show new games, like Project Athia and Returnal, but it's tough to get hyped about new stuff in the same way, considering these reveals are for gamers who know these franchises.

Again, I think they raised the hype meter. I think they did exactly what they had to do.

If MS put out games that looked as good as the ones Sony showed, I would certainly say so. They haven't yet. Their XSX "third party showcase" was a disaster and they basically had to apologize for it after. I hope they do show those games as it would just mean more good games.

Regarding 1: Well I have true 4k games right now on my xbox one x. Perhaps i'm more accustomed to it not being a new feature. Ray Tracing is capable of so much more then simply adding reflections to a limited amount of surfaces. I'm willing to bet that they went with the subtle approach because PS5 isn't capable of handling more and it affected performance too much. Anyway, I'm sure we will see different uses of it from MS first party titles.

Show me one game coming on PS5 that was shown on thursday that looks better than TLOU2.

Regarding 3: I already mentioned the quick level loads in ratchet. Show me something that couldn't be done on the new xbox. That was the running narrative around here, was that the SSD was soooo fast and double speed of the xbox ssd, that it could do things xbox couldn't. I'm fully expecting based on what we saw of Ratchet and clank, the jumping to different areas of a level are more akin to portals used to get behind tough to beat enemies. I'm fairly certain the fast level jumps we saw were more about setup for the story ( separating Ratchet and clank ) then it was what you would see during actual gameplay, but that remains to be seen.

I'll agree that the MS inside xbox event was way overhyped (its happened more than once) shouldn't have been billed as giving you a taste of the new Xbox. However still, I didn't see anything from the sony show that made me think, wow this is a huge leap over PS4. It wasn't just me, but i was watching the show with other PS4 owners thinking the same thing. most of what was shown looked like PS4. that isn't a bad thing, but it didn't do a lot to make me think this could only be done on next gen (Ratchet and clank the exception)

You can't really argue that there are a very small number of first party sony titles, and even smaller number of PS5 games that look like PS4 games shown. I think once people get past the initial wow excitement, we will see more level heads look at what was shown with a critical eye.
Its Saturday, the general consensus is that you are wrong. Ratchet & Clank and Horizon are the best looking games we have seen to date. Period.

OP, it was not just this reveal that's putting pressure on MS...... MS has been under pressure to deliver since 2013 DRM and all the follies that ensued...... This is the time where excuses will no longer cut it or they risk losing the last 40 million that are still with them. They bought 14 Studios, which are mostly indie studios, it's already a toll order for them to compete with AAA PS Studios visually, critically and in sales. It will be even harder for these indie studios to impress against juggernauts like Guerilla, ND and Santa Monica, and pretty much all PS studios which are competing fiercely like Sucker Punch, Insomniac etc....

I don't see how InXile, Compulsion Games, Undead Labs will compete with these heavy weights when Turn 10, Playground, 343 and The Coalition can't even compete visually, critically and saleswise to PS studios, These studios are being lapped in reviews and graphics. Though I must say, I'm looking to see what the hyped up Initiative comes up with. I'm waiting to see what all that money brings....

Ok, we will hold you to that. They haven't yet no, but I'm certain they will.

Not buying that. Ratchet and clank had a lot going on screen, but wasn't a huge leap from the PS4 remake judge for yourself. Watch in 1080p side by side with the new ratchet

Horizon 2 looked good, but the first one looked nearly as good. It still looked like enhanced PS4 to me.

Please utilize the multi-quote function more, especially when all three could be responded to with one post in this instance.

Otherwise it comes off as spamming up the thread. Thank you.

Ok, we will hold you to that. They haven't yet no, but I'm certain they will.

What makes you so certain? They've been overpromising and underdelivering for a decade straight now.

Because they purchased some AA and indie studios? I'm not seeing them having anything on the level to match the combination of Spider-Man, Demon's Souls, Horizon Forbidden West, Ratchet and Clank, Gran Turismo 7, Returnal, Project Athia, Kena, Astro Bot, Deathloop, Ghostwire Tokyo and Little Big Planet.

Forza will be there, Halo. Maybe we will get the first good Fable game? Oh, and the indie walking simulator, Hellblade, that no one cared about until it became an exclusive.

Sure they can compete visually and critically. If you really think those studios are being lapped in sales and graphics lets see what the sales numbers are like?

Wait until they show first party? how difficult is that. You're discounting the talent they added and grew studio wise. Hellblade was made by 22 people if i recall correctly and it was one of the better visual titles, with themes that nobody out there had attempted (portraying a character suffering mental illness ), It received acclaim BEFORE ms purchased them. You really have trouble applying an even hand to both consoles don't you.

Ha. Fable will not sell in this modern era, it was never a huge franchise to begin with....Fable got most of it's hype from Molyneux's proppings and delusions of grandeur. Molyneux is the quintessential hypeman. Never forget, Milo....

Why do you sound so defensive lately? Damage control in overdrive on these forums this week...

It's there for all to see. GTS sales vs Forza and in graphics. Uncharted vs Gears, LOU vs State of Decay (Zombie Game, apocalyptic or even Crackdown if you wish). There's no contest in visuals. Any open world tps from MS studios vs Spiderman/Days Gone. What against GOW? What against Tsushima? What against Astrobot and these are only some of the games.......I'm thinking we should have already seen something from MS first party, even an indie, the last game that came from MS studios is Bleeding Edge from NT....It's been the same trend for a almost a decade....

Im too old to be a fanboy dude. I supported MS for a long time, even bought a One at launch and it was a huge piece of shit. I have a good PC and a GamePass sub so I can play their games if I like them. I would rather see good games than bad ones. I just call it like I see it.

As I said a million times I was really impressed with Sony's reveal and also I think their work this gen justifies trust. Ms' absolutely does not and I'm not yet sure you can buy your way out of the hole they dug for themselves. Making games is really hard as the mess with Platinum showed. And even if Halo looks awesome I don't trust 343 to deliver. But we will see.
