They were obviously going to say that no matter what was shown. The show was an absolute onslaught of huge games.
He didn't even mention Demon's Souls, Spider-Man (about as big of a game franchise in the industry today) or Ratchet and Clank (the most impressive next-gen title shown yet).
I think you need to check my posting history. I have 3 PS4 Pro's and a PC, no Xbox. I'm just not here to oversell an event because I'm likely to buy their product.
The event was missing anything from their launch studio for PS4 (Sucker Punch).
It was missing anything from their Tier 1, critically acclaimed studio (Naughty Dog).
There was nothing from SSM or Quantic Dreams either.
There was nothing like The Order 1886
The PS4 event was a great event. The PS5 was decent but that's all. PS4 event opened and showed you exactly what was now possible with the Killzone demo and the SS presentation. The equivalent of the Driveclub reveal was a shaky GT7, in which we still don't know a launch date or if dynamic weather will be there. You saw David Cage with Beyond, Blow with Witness and MM with Dreams for the diversity and wonder. You had Deep Down and Watch Dogs to excite about pushing new boundaries (though in hindsight, both failed at that).
I actually liked LL more than UC4, but the Miles Morales unveil was underwhelming. There was what, 15 seconds of actual in game playtime during that reveal. I think it was 90 seconds long, and the first 45 were intro and cinematic. Then it looked just like Spiderman, maybe a bit sharper on the 4K video's. Demon's Souls looks fantastic graphically but what about all this 're-imagining' we've been hearing from Bluepoint? Is it faithfully remastered or not etc. There were a few character models and what looked like a boss cutaway at the end.
Sackboy seems to exist......just because. LBP3 was poor and stale and I actually don't mind the entire series. I was not impressed when Hub was cancelled for instance.
R&C isn't my cup of tea, but sort of led the bundle of titles aimed at that age group like astro's playroom, Sackboy etc. that are aimed at and was visually impressive. I believe the remake did good numbers but it wasn't 'mindblowing'. And then we get the tier 1 franchise at the end. HZD was always pretty and HFW looks to follow that trend, but noone said the problems with that title were the graphics. It was the clunky gameplay, the side quest cutaways straight from oblivion and skyrim, the ridiculous and stupid A.I. of the humans etc. We saw breathing underwater, did we see flying mounts though? Did we see a larger array of rideable mounts than the first game?
I get everyone is excited for the new generation coming in, but Sony don't need a crutch from fans. It was a middling event. And this is from someone who actually liked Contrast on the PS4 at release so don't think I'm discounting the indies. There just wasn't enough excitement there. Titles like Volcano High, Bugsnax etc. shouldn't have been anywhere near this. Destruction AllStars looked like f2p - Returnal was interesting. They should have done less titles with more 'reveal'. And then they close the event with one of the ugliest consoles ever made.......
And yes, Sony may have another showcase later down the line that is better than this event. Or at least I'm hoping for that.
Microsofts 3rd party event underwhelmed
Sony's 1st party event underwhelmed
That's where we are.
