Phil Spencer feels it's counter productive to lock people away from games by making them device exclusive, prefers to scale games across ecosystem

But why does it have to be that way? It seems like these rules about exclusives pushing sales ect are just made up for the console world. It's purely a marketing narrative made to sell you on new expensive things when your old inexspensive thing can still run it...

Also, someone needs to show me all these "next gen" features that can only be done on an Xbox Series X or PS5. I get the faster loading and level switching instantly ect, but it seems like by making your game reliant on one specific brand new piece of hardware that wont have a mass consumer market until a year or two in is kind of limiting the potential of sales. Shooting yourself in the foot one might say.

As far as i'm concerned, Xbox does have the most next gen title so far with Flight Simulator 2020. Show me a game on that scale that looks nearly as good or detailed. We're talking planetery scales here. I'm not worried about this whole "downgraded because not exclusive", i know any competent dev who wants to maximise the potential of their title can easily accomodate to all devices with relative ease as they all are back and forward compatible with each other, just more or less powerful.
That's not only business, exclusives are the very reason why Playstation (and Nintendo) dominates the console industry.

Sales for systems will pick up, these companies can't even fullfill demand at launch.
From there word of mouth does most of the stuff and what will people be talking about mostly?
Games.
And guess which company will have games you don't need a next-gen console for?

Also, you know MS has a problem with their games library when Flight Simulator is being used to counter the competition.

Has being on xbox and pc generated more sales than a ps exclusive yet?

Genuine question, surely forza has, or halo?

Nobody knows, but surely they made more revenue than if they would support nothing but XB1. Apparently the revenue turned out to be significant enough to change their strategy and go all-in into multiplatform.

If you really want to know how Xbone will limit the potential of SeX, just research Jaguar cpu. Then research multithreaded Zen 2 processors.

Its an OCEAN of difference. And that's just one part of the dev puzzle. SSD and RAM could be as much or more affected.

Development of software that runs on both hardware will have to be limited in scope from the very outset of process to make it work.

This is of course how cross gen always works. But the way Phil is talking, it seems they want software running on Xbone for the long haul. THAT will impede software development in a major way.

Except we are yet to see those Zen2 CPUs put into proper work, I haven't seen any gameplay mechanics, physics or AI that would indicate that Jaguar isn't enough anymore, actually pretty much all games shown so far are cross-gen titles, if any game won't be released on current-gen consoles it's solely because of business decision (mybe except R&C, but not because of the CPU). And that won't change for at least next one or two years, just as it happened during previous generation transition. It'll all depend on the people, how fast will they switch on the new hardware, the slower it will go the longer the PS4/XB1 will be supported. It has been experienced over and over with each generation, that the transition period takes some time, and MS is fully aware of that, that extra year or so of XB1 support won't change much, if anything, and MS wants to actually use it as a marketing tool. 2 years from now we will see whether it paid off or not.

Ummm we don't want games to be developed for a 7 year old platform if we pay 400/500 Dollars for a new console. Tech moves forward and not backwards. On PC you have to upgrade your hardware too after a few years to enjoy games that bring new stuff to the table. So if people buy a new Console that has a more powerful GPU, CPU etc they want games that are build for this specific piece of hardwarde. It is that simple. Capiche? And publishers like EA, Ubi and Co. will most likely bring crossgen titles to the market for a long time. At least for 2 years I think. So all is gucci.

You have a beautiful PC for that approach, it is not how consoles have ever worked and nobody has really well argued how that improves things over the BC + generations based approach that defines the medium.

Why do you want consoles to become like closed / fixed specs PC's? What is the benefit if we move to generationless iterative HW like mobile phones and have devs aim to more and more generic HW even on consoles and spend more time configuring and testing on more HW variations?

It's up to developers to bring the quality on both platforms, and every time a shit happens, guess what, it's never on the newer platform but on the older one. I think we should stop treating as a incompetent children but rather ask that they should bring quality no matter what platform they are working for.

I obviously get that these are new hardware, but developers will bring these games for both generations at the beginning for profit as there's a very active base on the old generation on the start of the new one.

I get your point, but if you look at the games Sony showed, there wasn't one that would be held back by the CPU. You could scale all those games to work on low end PC and ps4

I was going to be snarky, but no, you simply don't know what is going on on either the CPU side or GPU side without metrics, so I would refrain from making claims like that. You don't know what is going on on each thread, what processes are running there and how much CPU time they are taking just by looking at a trailer. You need performance tools.

I mean, I'm sure there's a lot of stuff that can be cut out from the game or scaled down, but you simply don't know given that they are working with a very high baseline and designing their game around it.

What features can be scaled down and which ones need to be cut? And what can't be cut? In the case of Horizon, what if a low end PC can't load up the terrain on time due to slow SSD or worse, an HDD? What if the low end console has to cut out flying because the terrain can't be loaded fast enough? What if fluid simulation takes a significant part of gameplay and that needs to be cut out? What if the game simulation is too much for a jaguar CPU alongside all the draw calls it has to make? What if you have to remove/replace too many assets since you are working with ~13 GBs of high speed ram?

"EVERYTHING IS SCALABLE!!" is a marketing theme by MS, maybe it works, maybe it doesn't. Maybe you have to cut out so much the game is just way too different. I mean, you can "scale down" any game to an Atari 3600 by removing everything, but that's not the point.

If we are talking about the same game just with some settings turned down, with the same features, you WILL design the game around the old CPU and I/O, you just have to.

Microsoft have made terrible decision for long time now. As other said they want to have as many user as possible for the subscription based service that is the only goal they care about. In that case I think there will be a time they could also provide their games, service on all other platform as well

If you want to do this "pro consumer" and "consumer choice" charade then put your money where your mouth is and also release all your games on PlayStation, Switch and even Stadia. He must think people are stupid.

Maybe they are if they cannot understand that it's not that easy to release your software on someone else's hardware, as oppose to all Win10 driven devices...

"The highest fidelity PC games rival anything that anybody has ever seen in video games. So this idea that developers don't know how to build games, or game engines, or ecosystems, that work across a set of hardware... there's a proof point in PC that shows that's not the case. "

This is utter nonsense. Anytime you have to optimize to the lowest common denominator there will be sacrifices made. Things like resolution, geometry/tessellation, textures, rendering distance, lighting, shadows can be more easily scaled for the best performance on different hardware. Things like animation and physics systems, and AI routines built to take advantage of the new Zen CPU cannot. Factor in the speed of the new SSD and just forget about it.
They should hire you. Seems like youve got a finger on the pulse of the industry. Like, why listen to the actual devs of the consoles when we have gaF forum dwellers like you around?

Arm chair devs have really upped their game these days. Look out Phil! Youre days are #'d!

lol it's so stupid

like yeah it would be great if Taco Bell sold McDonald's hamburgers too. or if i could pay Kroger prices at Whole Foods.

the world doesn't work that way.

Also Phil Spencer.

Anyone got a link to this quote?

WRONG! He never said that.

During a recent interview with Japanese economic website Toyo Keizai, ever-charming Ken Kutaragi had this to say about Sony's goal for the PS3: "for consumers to think to themselves 'I will work more hours to buy one'.
LOL Oh that's right, you got me, I must have thought about all the articles written around that quote that said it means people should get a second job. Work more hours, or get a second job, basically have the same meaning in this context.

You've got to feel for Spencer having to spew this bullshit because the board demanded X1 support be extended.

I guess it's the price of being a high-ranking exec.

Like, seriously, imagine complaining about a company giving you the ability to invest in next gen and its games at your leisure while adding in a cheap rental service to play over 200+ games on the cheap every month. Just, wow....

Since you buy into the theory that the older console is holding the newer console back (despite us hearing that they design for new hardware and port down)

How exactly do you know these titles aren't making full optimal use of the hardware? Please explain
Let's step back a bit as we are defending not how Series S could hold back Series X, this is about supporting Xbox One S and it not holding things back at all. Yeah, totally getting them at their word that taking a title targeting a 3.8 GHz octa core Ryzen with an SSD backing it is no way held back by you having to run the same game on an HDD and 1.6 GHz octacore Jaguar powered system (with players expecting cross generation MP too) and run it well.

Sorry, but I do not buy either the pro consumer angle they are selling nor the game is designed to maximise Series X and then ported down to Xbox One S (unless it either runs like shit on the latter or limits the scope of the former, not sure why Xbox fans would be happy with either choice and call them pro consumer moves).
This is arguing One S support for a year I s anything but a temporary solutionfor studios not ready with Series X exclusives a little over a year from now and selling it as a pro consumer move.

personally I don't think BC is that big of a deal. I get all my games through GameFly so BC is not an issue for me. When I buy a PS5 this year I don't plan on playing my PS4 games on it.
Stop lyin'! Lol Got Derm!!
You know damn well youre going to play your old games on PS5 if its available. TF? Dont lie broski. Holy shit..

I am struggling to understand why Microsoft is in the console business. This kind of talk shows a complete misunderstanding of console gaming and generations. We are in the 8th generation. Console gamers know that to get better games you need to buy into the new generation. I was born after the first atari game, I have literally been conditioned to accept that one day my console will be useless. It's all I have known. How does Phil not know this?

It seems they want to be a third party publisher. They want their games available everywhere then release on Sony and Nintendo consoles, why dont you? Why stop at support for Xbox one. Let's mandate every exclusive runs on the Switch. Switch will end this gen as the best selling console. Surely it would be pro-consumer to support it for the rest of eternity. 0.19 tflops baseline for all first party MS games, let's do this.

Everything he has said here is misguided. PC gaming IS held back by bad hardware. Xbox One was a bad hardware and it has held back every single PC game since. And Xbox One WILL hold back Xbox Series X games that could've been built around a console with almost 10x more tflops, 8x more CPU power and 40x more SSD speeds.

No one is this clueless. I think he's just fucking with us, and is preparing to unleash half a dozen games that look like Hellblade 2 on July 23rd.

unfortunately I think he is this clueless

Phil has been with Xbox for a long time, head of studios throughout late 360 and Xbox one era when there were no exclusives at all

anyone who says console generations are an internet meme is full of shit

I expect a lot of cross gen looking stuff on the 23rd

Hellblade 2 was a cinematic trailer, we won't get anything close to it in actual gameplay

Do you genuinely believe that or is that just a tongue in cheek narrative that is still bandied around.

If you do, can you than please explain to me how PS4 managed to amass that huge lead, when there really weren't any hits till 3 or 4 years into the generation? The exclusives sell consoles narrative too me is hilarious, because its completely fabricated, yet so many people latched on to it. Its as if they still have the mindset of when exclusives were a huge thing in the PS1/2 era, which was a time before many of the posters, that are still spreading this ancient spin.

Most people didn't buy a PS4 for Killzone and Knack. They bought a PS4 because they knew PS4 would have the best exclusive software

Spider-man Miles Morales will sell consoles and most likely more than Halo, Horizon Forbidden West will do the same in 2021. They can release big titles early to get people to buy the new console

Then exclusive games launch is useless and MS plan is better, good AAA cross games you can profit them, and 2 years after true exclusive next gen titles.

What do I have to gain about lying. I'm not buying a $500 machine to play PS4 games.
And you still lying. Lol.

But youre gonna pay $500 dollars for a machine that can play PS5 and some PS4 games. No need to BS. C'mon! Especially if PS4 games see an uptick in performance and visuals. Now youre just trolling at this point.

It does highlight how "you poor people get a second job and stop meaning" was neither the intention of what Kutaragi's said nor anything more that a popular way to mock the high price of PS3. Once you take away the replaceable bigger HDD, you factored in HDMI by default, and built in WiFi (and take that $65-70 or whatever it was for the Xbox 360 WiFi adapter)... the real price of the 20/60 GB PS3's was a lot less outrageous and the BC support at launch of PS1 and PS2 titles was leagues leagues beyond what the competition offered for their previous generation.

His quote was ready a "we made a premium product full of value, you will want to get it and do what it takes to do so" and considering how much they were losing even at $599 I am not sure how customers were the ones getting screwed...

Microsoft is gonna have a tough time when the time comes to drop support of old platforms. What is tbeir justification gonna be? "we dropped support of xbox one because we would like to provide our customers with new experiences......" 😂

Phil is a good dude and Microsoft is better off having him leading the charge for the gaming side of things. But,he's like a politician, with no real beliefs or stances, like a leaf in the wind just blowing along ready to say whatever is beneficial in the moment.

Like it or not Sony is not this way and I can respect that.

They can make their choices and I make mine as a consumer. What I expect from first party devs selling me a new console is some focus on that one, some tiles at least that are taking it to the next level and proving its worth.

Sony has been able to give lots of exclusive support to the new consoles with exclusive titles in their launch windows as well as tons of big titles and small titles to the previous console even after it had been succeeded. Look at the late generation PS2 titles when PS3 was coming out, look at the late gen PS3 and PS4 titles when PS4 and PS5 were coming out respectively.

Not sure why MS should be held to a lower standard.

"We gave you bums one years to pony up the money to get the new console, what's the matter with you?!" :P.

This whole "being left behind" thing is total and utter bollox.

If someone buys a current gen Xbox now then they have 6+ years worth of games to play and enjoy, that's the deal they are getting, there is no promise of what's to come beyond games already announced for the system.

The same goes for someone buys an old Nvidia GPU, they can play older games and maybe a few newer games if they scale down to their hardware. But they are not being "left behind" if a developer decides to not support their old arse GPU that Nvidia themselves don't even support anymore and no longer release new drivers for.

What's funny is in a year or twos time once their get their shit into gear and start focusing on next gen games they will then suddenly "leave behind" millions of gamers on older hardware. What's the messaging going to be then? "We have a product for those people who have Internet, it's called Xcloud"?

They are digging their own hole on this one with the messaging. All they have to do is say something like "we are doing cross-gen for a while because it suits us and it will help game sales (and subscriptions) due to larger install bases etc". Not this bullshit of "anti consumer" this, "pro consumer ", "locked away" this, "inclusive" that.

Just fucking say the strategy suits you at the moment and be done with it, spare us the bullshit.
The deal is that with the new console you get all those same games with better visuals (higher res & HDR) and more smoothness (higher framerate, less input lag). They don't care if you play their games on Xbox One or Xbox Series X, as long as you're using Xbox. It's actually going closer to the PC model, where an upgrade gives you a better experience of the games you already have.

I get why they want to do it, do not see what it is in it for me. Buying a $499+ box to get the same games with ever minor improvements... bah... that would not be that good and one of the reasons I like console generations and consoles.

I think Microsoft is doing the right thing in some cases. Sony is screwing ps4 owners out of spiderman miles dlc to keep it "exclusive". It was not built from scratch for the PS5 that dlc could of been on the ps4. The first real next generation game will be horizon how many years out. If Microsoft is done with cross generation by then they are fine. I would be mad at Microsoft for cross generation but not like Sony has a from scratch naughty dog or horizon at launch.

Its stronger for Sony sure but we are down to 2 home consoles and went from near 300 million consoles sold to less than 200 million. If your a fan of 1 company controlling everything sure its great. Im sure Sony won't trample rights and be dicks if they drive Microsoft out to lol. Now get a second job!
Sony screwed me by giving me a next gen game on a next gen platforms?

PS4 was released in 2013. It's fucki g old and need to be retired

huh? this is a weird take. some people arent into replaying old games. i dont think i ever turned on my ps3 after buying a ps4. i didnt play a single 360 game on the xbox one.

i recently upgraded my pc and even though i have over 250 last gen games on steam, i havent bothered downloading them to run them at 4k or 120 fps because i just dont want to play these games.

There is a good mix of forced naïveté and disingenuous straw man arguments in there, congrats :).
You really believe MS is going to allow Sony to show them up on 1st party visuals with their games even though the Series X is clearly a more powerful machine - even if their games are cross gen? If you do, I got a bridge to sell you. You guys know better than this. .

Because Playstation already had build up strong brand-recognition and mindshare due to their exclusive output through 3 gens prior.

It really is that simple to figure out. Why can't you?

Stop projecting your group discord pack behaviour with this "you people" "you guys". You can keep towing the company line, be happy that you one one the other console in this eternal console warring scenario and miss out... that is the standard you hold your dear company to. I am past the point of telling some hardcore Nintendo fans that their attitude to OS designs and online was also helped by a fanbase that hardly pushed back.

We will see what the better and newer game experiences are and what make each console unique. Stay stuck in the 12 > 10.2 "we won, we are faster, better number" angle and ignore anything else... it looks like that bridge you talk about is a used one as it sounds like you bought it already from someone else ;).

Fail spin sir said in 2017 when they released the XoneX thst they don't believe in generation and that they will do a PC like strategy.

I assume people who decided to continue with Xbox know this and they are happy with MS offering.

What projection?? You cant be serious.

MS is basically doing the same thing Sony is with the PS5. Games on Series X will be of Series X quality with Smart Delivery. And they still will deliver the same games on older hardware for those who still want to keep their One's. Thats with all their first party games.

3rd party can do what they want as they dont want to mandate what 3rd party developers do. Its literally a win-win. No projection. No BS. It is what it is.

Some of you kats seem super salty about all this for some reason.

Of course devs want to be able to use existing tools and assets they've created and have their game be cross generational with a much bigger user base.

My post was about comparing how devs approach development on customizable PCs vs hardware locked consoles. Some things can be easily scaled for performance, some can't.

Yep, "we" sure sound salty and maybe angry too .

Super the same thing... except Sony's PST games are PS5 exclusives, the console has BC, and the PS4 titles being released are PS4 titles first and foremost. See, you can have generations and not screw over your existing users :P.

Thats why they have the tools in place to deal with the situation. All this concern about next gen games being held back is just odd. If there were to be no differences between Series X and One X, why would they waste billions in developing it in the first place?

Doesnt matter though, tbh. In a couple of weeks, we'll see just how " held back" Series X games are. If the games shown dont look any better than this gen, Ill habe no problem admitting i was wrong. I certainly dont think that will be the case though.

what game take advantage? Spiderman looks like could run on PS4. Or you are talking me about games not releasing until later 2021 or 2022 such as Horizon or Ratchet?

You keep taking my posts out of context and it isnt meant that way. I whole heartedly oppose the opinion that Series X games will be held back because their cross gen. We'll see in a couple of weeks...

So it wasn't due to actual exclusive games that people played on their PS4, but their brand recognition. I guess being $100 cheaper played no role this generation nor did being $100 more expensive play a role last generation. It is just such a silly and disingenous narrative that doesn't what so ever. Games come in 3rd after price in 1st and power in 2nd.

Well, it's probably gonna be the first next-gen system-seller, right? 😏

It does look good though, if that's what you want to hear.

Out of the entirety of M$ library, picking MSFS as somehow being a non important IP, a game that has nearly 40 year history, is not the one to do it with.
