This thread has got me thinking:

Let's suppose that the XSX shows more power by being able to push 4k/60FPS with all 3rd party titles but the PS5 is only able to push either 4k/30 or 4k(checkboard)/60FPS. All other things being equal. Which would you be willing to live with?

The Xbox Series X GPU is like 18%~ faster than the PS5 and the rest is nearly the same how would the XSX get 100% more performance out of that?

At best there is a small resolution difference. 2160p versus 1800p or so.

Because you are judging by theoretical performance and not real world. That's the point of the thread. Suppose you see realworld?

We ain't outta here in ten minutes, we won't need no rocket to fly through space
The difference is going to be pretty negligible. If I wanted peak performance I wouldn't be choosing between consoles.

It's gonna be a PS5 and a PC upgrade further down the line for anything I can play on that instead.

It entirely depends on the game.

Personally, I'm still wowed by Switch and PS4 graphics. My peasant eyes will even tolerate down to 240p. Performance and feel are more important to me than visual fidelity (within reason, of course) so I'd prefer 60fps in a vacuum with no other factors.

I'd go with the XSX if this was true

You don't seriously believe that's going to be the case though do you?

Edit - Nevermind I didn't see the Checkerboard/60fps. That'd be PS5 still then.

Most people, especially on here, will tolerate whatever they get because they’ve already made their mind up what console they’re getting. I doubt there’s more than 10% of people on here that are actually on the fence.

60fps for me but only as long as the dyanmic res isn't something stupid. I will not be impressed seeing less than 60/1600cbr for example - assuming xsx is hitting 60/2160 native

It's kind of another reason why I might wait a little longer this year too. See the first DF videos that come out. I'm not expecting big differences from Ubi, they like to be non controversial from memory and their workflow probably works better on a more balanced experience across platforms than having forked optimisations. But others yeah, if I go with PS5 I want to see what the real world hit/difference is like. My line of thinking right now is:

At the moment first choice is PS5 upgrade and I have a pre-order (just because I have a PS4 and am embedded in the ecossytem - friends etc. have no bearing on me moving platform)
If the launch lineup is still as gash as it is now with a couple weeks to go, I'm going to cancel unless it's £350
If the XsX manages to come in at an astonishing £350 and the PS5 doesn't then I'll pick one up to play some of the titles on the BC with a view to better third party performance over the generation. Might look at a PS5 later depending on what and when GG, ND etc launch their next games.
If PS5 is > £400 with the same lineup and the XsX is cheaper than the PS5 then I'll lean towards the Xbox but probably still hold off until the new year and watch the DF comparisons in the meantime

30 vs 60 will never happen, the devs will just drop down the resolution or implement a dynamic scaling and call it a day, and everyone will be happy.

I voted the first option, but honestly, I'm "willing to live with" whatever they deliver, unless it's abominable. I'm fine with a large range of outcomes. I don't have rigid criteria for what tech performance is acceptable in a game. I just don't think like that.

If the game is good, little dips in framerate or marginally lower resolutions, compared to some version I'm not even playing, doesn't even register with me.

There's no reason at all why the gap should be more than 2160p vs 1800p, and as long as that's the reality, I don't care, because it's basically impossible to tell the difference between the two.

You are making a thread for theoretically smallest difference in performance between any consoles released in history.

Differences are smaller than ever.

i’d just like more 60fps games this gen, for playstations first party stuff i could live with the odd game being 30fps.

Sony

Nintendo
For third parties, I would go with Series X without question. Not because of the graphical differences, but for future support and Backward Compatibility.
I'm much more comfortable investing in Microsoft's ecosystem than Sony's.

Don't pass gaas, it is your Destiny!
I just wouldn't buy 3rd party stuff on PS5, stick with PC or if I was getting a console Xbox SX.

PS5 for sony stuff, xbox for the rest.

Sounds like a funny thread, you've not been paying enough attention to the news lately.

.

Many other games are 30fps with no raytracing on XSX so far, so better keep that thread for another time.

Variable refresh rate is going to be much more important this gen, I think. It won't be a straight 30/60 battle for those of us with screens that support it.

Either way, I'll keep doing what I do now. I'll play it on whichever console runs it best, unless there's such a stupid deal that I can't avoid it.

Plot twist

If XSX has its own version of reconstruction with Machine Learning similar to nVidia's DLSS, then what?

I just don't understand why people are expecting such a large gap beetween PS5 and XSX.

From the official specs the only advantage the XSX has over PS5 is a 18% more powerful GPU.

When compared to PS4, Xbox One has a 28% weaker GPU, 3 times less GPGPU power and a horrible memory configuration and for the majority of time it was a 1080p vs 900p situation.

The PS5 is much closer to the XSX than the One was to PS4.

The most important thing to me is getting frame rates right. If it’s 30, it’s gotta be locked and stable. It should 60 next gen for 90% of games. I know it probably won’t be, but that’s what both consoles should deliver. Resolution can always be checkerboarded, upscaled, DLSS and whatever other tricks they use. So I’m assuming both can accomplish that.

I grew up playing on a CHEAP standard def television and now I am old and wear glasses..... Could stay at 1080p forever and I would be completely happy. I can never tell when content is 1080 or greater on my 65" 4k TV.

What time is it?
I'm committed to Sony's ecosystem since I went all digital for PS4. And as much as I love the Xbox One X hardware, their UI is a miserable experience. Until target resolutions stabilize for multiple generations, developers will not target 60FPS in the majority of games on consoles. Maybe I'm old, but I have a hard time discerning resolution differences these days.

Hmm this is such a loaded question as it depends on so many factors. Not only how scalable said 3rd party engine is but how these two machines benchmark against each other, what customizations beyond the (still incomplete) spec sheets are, how API and abstraction impacts performance on each and how easily these customizations are able to be leveraged by 3rd parties. That said, with how good CB and DLSS type solutions are becoming, I'd gladly sacrifice a bit of native resolution if it keeps frame rates consistent but there won't be any games going from 60 down to 30, that much is certain.

There should be a clown emotes to replies like this.

I will take good exclusive games.

I have been playing since the mega drive/snes and never once cared about if a game is running better in one console or another.

What matters to me is having the maximum number of games that I enjoy to play.

Haven't you all heard. Starting this generation, graphics don't matter anymore. In fact, 4K is overhyped. It's all about how fast your SSD is.

I'm trying to find out what's behind this new narrative. I hope to get to the bottom of it one day.
