Does Get Out surpass the Shining in terms of complexity?

I'm not necessarry arguing it's a "better" or "worse" film than The Shining, but in terms of complexity does it surpass The Shining

in terms of subtext, imagery,symbolism etc. etc.
 
It's not even in the same league as the shinning.

Don't get me wrong, it was a well made and acted thriller, but as a non American it was primarily interesting as a demonstration of the irrational phobia of, and modern media/political obsession with the bogeyman of racism as believed in by those who follow identity politics, rather than it's objectively silly on screen 'horror'.

It's the wish fulfilment movie of the perpetually offended.
 
Everything in Get Out is explained. The Shining doesn't bother to and that's one of the things that makes it great.

Also, in terms of imagery and symbolism there's few films that have sparked as much analysis, theorising and speculation as The Shining.

I really liked Get Out but The Shining is an all time classic.

Mostly, yes (usual caveats apply - the very hungry caterpillar is probably less complex than Citizen Kane - this is a generalisation and as such exceptions will always exist).
 
Get Out is a decent flick. It is no where close to The Shining.

The best part about Get Out were the reactions of the crowd. Everyone was going crazy at the end of that movie. It kept the whole theater on the edge of its seat. The final 20 minutes was something else. I don't think I'll ever be apart of something like that again. It was like a playoff game atmosphere.
 
The Shining by far. Best parts about The Shining are the cinematography and music IMO. Kubrick is a such a genius they had to reuse his imagery for Dr. Sleep so people would actually watch it.

Get Out is a pretty entertaining movie and Jordan Peele shows he can make a decent Hollywood flick.

They are not really in the same league IMO.

No, I'm saying all literature (not all books are considered literature) is more complex than movies. In this particular case Get Out loses its complexity because it has no subtly in symbols or message, it slaps you across the face with them, they are doing the thinking for you. In literature the meanings and symbols are almost never standing right in front of you, you have to find it yourself, it makes you think, it does not think for you.

But this is only my opinion, others can and do think differently
 
There's nothing complex about Get Out, it repeatedly hits you over the head with its metaphor throughout the film. Same applies to the other film Peele directed except that time the story was even less interesting and made no fucking sense whatsoever.

Lol I love get out but us is a complete mess. At least it made an awesome house at Halloween horror nights and Tim Hiedecker was hilarious.

Agreed 100%.

The Shining is a good movie that has aged well, but it's not a masterpiece.

It is, however, one of the few examples of movies that are better than the books they are based on.

Get out was in no way complex, but I thought it was a much better movie than "US" which made absolutely no sense.

Actually, US was somewhat entertaining until the final 1/3 of the movie, where things just went totally off the rails storywise.

How in the fuck? Who would compare possibly the greatest action film and sequel of all time to an overrated Marvel film only praised to high heaven cause of it's cast and crew not being white?

And no, Get Out has not the complexity nor thrills to even compete with The Shining. It isn't even a fucking conversation! Sorry OP! The Shining is a masterpiece still being discussed today as to what it all means. Get Out, at its most basic is about race and how bad the black community cops it from whites from a black perspective. Doesn't get much deeper than that, and I love Get Out as well.

That's because Peele wrote the metaphor first, then made a story around it and didn't even bother to write a proper ending because the whole fucking movie is just about the metaphor. I understand that everyone has his preferences but as a person that prioritizes the actual fucking content of a movie instead of its "hidden messages" I fucking can't stand Peele's movies, they're pretentious mediocrities at best and the only reason imo they're being praised by critics is because they're virtue signalling.
 
No, I would say that Us is a more complex film than Get Out and it doesn't come close to The Shinning.
I enjoyed both movies by Peele.

There were more metaphors to understand in Us than in Get Out, and also a lot more symbolism.
Little details such as the line "we are Americans" left a strong impression in my mind. Us was a huge metaphorical guilt trip of American consumerism and oppression of the less privileged, but it worked well.

I also don't feel that complex means better, it just requires you to pay more attention.

For a moment I forgot we were only talking about metaphors and symbolism, yeah I actually agree with that.
