I considered making a dedicated thread to raise this observation but felt as it was commentary on GAF itself I should maybe try airing it here first of all - even if the audience for it is not entirely apt.

Short version:
I keep seeing instances of people here losing some humanity and a whole lot of compassion.

Longer version:
99.9% of my GAF time is in the Politics sub-forum, so this is where my observations are coming from.
Real world events are frequently reported and discussed, many of them concerning violent incidents.
Increasingly I'm seeing more responses to events where partisan lines are drawn and where the most extreme of views has gone from "Lock them up and throw away the key" to "Give them a bullet".
I appreciate that things out there in the real world are tumultuous and have been escalating in 2020, it's a bit of a worry to see these escalations reflected with GAF comments.
GAF doesn't seem to me to be a place for radicalisation of anyone, and I do have great faith in the Mods' light-but-effective touch.

I just don't think this is a healthy path to go down and we've all seen more extreme versions of where this can lead.

I'm not sure what solution there may be. Or even if people think I'm just seeing stuff that isn't there (maybe I am). I don't want to control speech. I don't want to limit anyone's freedom of expression. But I also don't want to see people forget their humanity and compassion.

I have to admit, the reason why I am a bit less often here than I used to is, that I have the rule for myself that whenever I feel the urge to report someone, I rather stay away from a forum for a few days.

This has happened a bit more often lately, unfortunately.

While some vicious stuff is okay when it's said in fun (see my comment above about Ethomaz ;) ), I don't really want to read that hate shit that Schrödingers Cat described in this forum being a regular occurence..

I appreciate the feedback.

I also want to say that I don't think people are actively promoting hate and violence as part of an ongoing exercise or something premeditated.
Just that events occur or a nerve is tapped and that some people can momentarily forget themselves.

I'm also very fond of savage humour and the ruff-and-tumble that occurs between higher-profile community members.
 
That's really hard to regulate. While I don't want to be reading hideously negative, murderous calls to violence (see alt-right stuff) every single day, you have a nation that looks more and more on the cusp of war. If you look at the cities, or something like the Kyle Rittenhouse footage, a miniature version of it is already circulating.

You have people who are hated, and rightfully so, trying to upturn every American value that anyone has ever loved, and fundamentally destroy everything good and cherished.

To a not over-the-top extent, these kinds of things are going to be real things that people feel, are justified, and reflect the environment outside of the forum.

I don't want to read a story about someone getting murdered during all this, lose my patience and vent, then have to worry about losing my Gaf account, for expressing something that I feel so strongly (which is the entire reason any of us are here, expressing ourselves) and need to get out. Likewise, I don't want to make a frustrated steam-letting joke about helicopter rides or something, and get permed, either.

I don't really have a solution to what the line is there, but I would hope it isn't too far in, and that there's some wiggle room when the reality is this bad.
