NeoGAF is heating up!

You can feel that the forum is coming alive. I just hope that the moderation stays the way it is. I'm a little concerned that the wrong people will get the power and start 'policing things'.

Personally, I've now stopped visiting ResetEra for ANY reason. That putrid little forum represents everything wrong with social media and how it has impacted our society. I literally cannot stand that place. Ugh.

I'm a huge Nintendo fan. Please tell me what I can do to be more annoying about said fandom.
Make a thread suggesting that Nintendo start treating its games like Disney treats its films... wanna buy Mario Odyssey? Better hurry, 2 more weeks and it goes in the Vault™! When will it be available to buy again? Who knows! 😉

I do like post here more then Restera but just coming off a 3 week ban for posting a funny titled Gold PS5 preorder thread doesn't feel great. Only getting vague warnings before that and not actual post strikes also kinda lame.

But what ever, sad I missed most of the Lying Ryan stuff lol

Moderation is staying the way it is. There's a circle of accountability now with the transparent ban page and ability to discuss mod actions openly in the designated areas. I can also be contacted directly and I act as an advocate for users when I see anything that appears to be unfair or shady (which is a rarity these days). I also have much better logging tools now on Xenforo to keep tabs on things day to day. If abuse of power started creeping up again it'd be spotted immediately from multiple directions. Our current group of mods are great, level-headed people who want positive outcomes for the community. We don't have any ideologues, activists, or egomaniacs on the team.

When I first came here again, it was wonderful (duh, otherwise I wouldn't be here), but there was always this sense that an absolute disaster had happened, and things were recovering, both in the speed and numbers that the forum moved, as well as sometimes tone.

Today, I don't really get those vibes anymore. Tonally, yesterday is disappearing. Gaf is reassembling itself in my mind as a constant from 2005 to today, and those weird few years just feel like something from a dream. The numbers and activity speak for themselves — I'm actually having to adjust a little bit, as the pond becomes bigger and bigger, and myself a smaller part in it, lol. That's okay, though.

Particularly recently. One hopes for less butthurt/crowing about Bethesda eventually, lol, but you can't deny that Gaming Side is fun, vibrant, and alive. Same for the other parts. All the bustle you could want, completely minus the absurd 2010s power tripping that's everywhere else.

I think normal is back, or very close.

The only thing left is the day of non-stop Burns laughter when Reset falls under this forum, and has an utter meltdown about it.

I must say that the thing which I really respect (and also am puzzled about) is that the new generation of mods here have somehow avoided becoming 'personas'. I recognise maybe one or two red names, but I couldn't tell their stance about anything.

Looking at pre-2017 GAF and 2020 Era, ideologue mod brands seem to be the root of the downfall. Whether that ideology is about Nintendo, black people, Hillary or trans does not seem to matter that much.

To me, the mods seem like folks who love video games and want to help create a space where folks can discuss without mind virus bullshit infecting everything which I am so glad for. Also agreed on the lack of discernable "personas" with the mod team. No more idiocy like Bish and more folks in the background who occasionally pop their head in and say hi.

I've been with this message board since almost the beginning. This account I think was started in 2004 but I've been around much longer. I really miss the old, old days of photoshop contests. People really brought the funny.

I was using NeoGaf as my news source about gaming. For many years I was just reading. Not being active etc (no account).

But about a year and a half ago (if I am not mistaken) I registered and joined da club. I'm enjoying myself so much and have a great time here with you guys. Thank you!!

It's a good forum. Each section (Gaming, Politics etc..) has good posters and moderation is fine. As long as you don't troll too much or do personal insults you're fine.

For extra laughs, check out the Ban thread in Off-topic if you haven't already. And correlate that with the Ban link at the bottom of the page that shows who got banned.

Not too many babies who will make a dedicated thread complaining. But it happens every so often.

No I never visited the ban thread. Thanks for letting me know.

I have popular OTs I'm looking for sinking into the third page within a matter of hours. :messenger_fearful:

Are the activity numbers exponentially increasing or something? This seems insane.

The absolute best thing I can say about GAF these days is that you are free to express opinions about pretty much any subject, and provided you are not actively seeking to troll, there's no chance of you getting banned.

There are some people's opinions on here I don't like in the slightest, but they have a right to voice them as they see fit, as I have a right to challenge them.

Unlike some other places where the purple hair dye flows free, nobody is singled out or banned just for not conforming to an opinion. And that's why it won't be long before this is the biggest games forum on the internet again, just like it was when I joined about three hundred years ago (2014)

We're at a full 2x the post activity compared to the beginning of this year. It's likely time to return to moving OTs that are more than a month old to the Community forum so they can continue along peacefully, too. People will want to check the Community tab more often.

I think the Gold membership should be upped in price, and subscribers to it get to pick one person per month they'd like to ban for a period of two weeks. Additionally, when non-gold members disagree with Gold members, I would like for Mods to get involved and back up the Gold members.

These are truly winning ideas, and I hope GAF leaderships carefully considers them.

Let's test the limits of free market.

I've heard a rumour that the numbers are driven by ex-reddit users flocking to somewhere where they won't be shit on for their life choices; the Virgin thread.

You're welcome

I do sincerely appreciate the lack of ideologically possessed moderation here, it's an absolute relief to be able to express yourself freely. This forum deserves to be the #1 gaming forum in the world on this distinction alone. Thank you for that.

I've noticed this too, I've been using the filtering tools to just click on the orange "|OT|" tag to see them all which makes them easier to find.

Damn I totally put my action figure OT in the wrong forum. I thought it had to go into Communities by default, but I guess I skipped a step 🤦🏻‍♂️

Well, I guess I'll see everyone in 2022.

Not if we can also counter vote. You'd get my vote to stay 😘

I can float it back in one of the primary forums for you for a month if you'd like. It helps to pick up some subs and eyeballs.

Great seeing the forum coming back with a vengeance. Been here for 11 eleven years now (and I've always been a big lurker before being a member), GAF is the best we have on the interwebs.

This is what strong bold leadership looks like people! Embrace it

Most of that's down to me though. I appreciate a funny or thoughtful comment 🤔

Trendlines look promising. Keep striving for excellence.

This is a much, much better Neogaf than the one from 10-13 years ago. There's much more freedom, and moderation is not oppressive as originally.

I'm betting it's all because of the tits (thanks to big MVPers Classicrockfan Classicrockfan and CaptainVanHelsing CaptainVanHelsing ) and the ass thread ( CaptainVanHelsing CaptainVanHelsing and many many others). Not a lot of other places where you're allowed to respect women and the beauty of their form nowadays. :messenger_grinning_sweat:

Personally I hope for getting more people with different views to engage in the politics forum, as a lot of right-wingers take up a lot of the discussion there and the discussions can end up being very US-focused. We all have good discussing different point of views, even when we vehemently disagree with them. That allows you to develop as a person and you to strengthen your argumentation. Putting politics to its own sub-forum was the best decision ever made though. Avoids having the political topics clutter everything up and despite the nay-sayers talking about how it would be hard to moderate, I would say it has been done generally well and made it easier to browse the site. It also allows to set a border between a person and their political opinions. Often people are antagonistic because the "other" is something they never have to accept as a person of multiple facets. Thus having the politics part split-off from the other areas of GAF has done well to see people as more than what political opinion they have.

Gaming is rather fun nowadays as well, with a lot of intense discussions. Even when some "drama" comes up, it at least comes with a lot of defenders as it does detractors. That's good. Nothing is good about just being exposed to your own opinions. Even when I disagree with someone, I can at least respect their drive to argue for their case.
The memes, the salt of the console wars. It's all in good fun, even though some take it far at times to antagonism. I'm also glad that the mods are so good at trying to avoid intervening too quickly, often just trying to ask people to cut things out if they continue for too long. This avoids resentment over calling the mods, by only using them as a means once things are getting way too out of hand and antagonistic. It also helps the sense of cliques and personas of moderators. Cliques having their mods they'd reach out to in order to demand action was a bad thing back in the days and which continued at Resetera.

The posts of this last page had me LOLing loudly in my office. It's great that the forum is picking up because this really is a great community. Being able to talk about games, laugh, and have a joke without the risk of getting banned for having an opinion (hey, isn't that what a forum is for?" is great.
