As a traditional console box they are already. They will continue with licensed PC's and handhelds and subsidise that with gamepass inclusion to try and remain competitive as a third party.
Licensed PCs will be a nightmare.
Much more expensive since OEM brands won't subsidise them and want to sell them at profit and games won't be properly optimised because each brand will use different parts (memory amounts/speed, etc).

The future of Xbox is AI created Gamepass shovelware. Every action they make is a step towards that.

Xbox died when them fumbled the 360 positivity. Here in the UK that was an all timer of a console. We all had them, I couldn't name 3 friends who had a One. Now you don't even need their consoles to play their games so what's the point of them?

Is a terminally ill person in an induced coma basically the same as being dead? (for the thread's purpose)
This exactly, and microsoft enabled it. They stripped their own brand so much that it has nothing of purpose or value left. Its essentially in a coma. Any attempt to create a new console after xbox series x will most likely be an extension of that life support system.

Exactly it was only earlier this week, I booted up the 360 after a long while, a console where you had the likes of Project Gotham Racing 4, James Bond Bloodstone, and Transformers fall of Cybertron, where did those type of games go?

Been dead to me since the Xbox one fiasco. They keep getting more nails driven in day by day. It's only the vast fortune of ms still keeping them alive. Anyone one else would have shed this rotting brand years ago.

This last couple of years it's been all been intentional I think.

Starfield needed to be a big success in terms of console sales and Gamepass subscriptions.

It failed to achieve either and after that they felt they were just wasting their time and losing money.

Xbox died when Peter Moore left in 2007, after that everything was restructured and management went to shit

Funnily enough 2007 was the best year Xbox ever had

Not yet, but they need a big game and they need big game soon for the platform.

The Xbox ROG Ally Is something I'm going to look at. I mean, that's hardware, right? It could work.

Two weeks, trust in the plan.
E3 2013 was the bullet

ABK acquisition was the final nail

Xbox is dead

Microsoft Gaming is what remains

Not going to lie, I actually would prefer Microsoft Gaming because it's going back to the old PC publishing days in all sweet full circle irony. Just this again but evolved in today's world.

I just use Game Pass PC for their stuff so anything of this with better API software for anything else I am more than content. Steam is my main platform outside PS5/Switch 2 for TV console.

They suck at creating great games, they excel at creating and churning out turds, they are great at that and Game pass is a testament of that.
I have a Series X sitting in my living room, and when I look at gamepass, I really can't see quality in that subscription.
My gaming time is precious to waste it on generic uninspiring games, just because they are available on the platform.

They have been dead since the start of the generation, 80 Billion dollars didn't cut it. They suck ass.

Xbox's problem is not being fun, the original Xbox was inspired by gaming but they merged media, streaming and apps together which is great but seems like a problem now.

Let me ask you, is SEGA dead? No, worse case scenario they be some third party publisher like them.

How can a console manufacturer that has more money than anyone else in the space by a massive margin. Who has bought massive game studios not be using this this better effect. I am guessing they just simply see the subscription based model as the future and will wait it out. They have the money to do so after all.

As a platform, absolutely.

Sorry, but no PC handheld or any other windows based PC device is ever going to be an actual Xbox just because it has an Xbox sticker slapped on.

They are basically switching over to PC and becoming a third party publisher.

Xbox was supposed to be the gamer's gaming machine, with the vibe surrounding Halo, Ninja Gaiden etc, that was supposed to be it's identity is that it was a little more hardcore than Sony or Nintendo.

In addition to that, the other side of it's identity was supposed to be bringing a more PC like experience to console gamers, hence devs like Bungie or Molyneux who had never or rarely worked on console games before, hence series like Crimson Skies making the jump to PC.

However the trouble starts with the Kinect, suddenly they're dropping the hardcore audience and chasing the Wii audience, with the One's "TV, TV, TV, SPORTS" approach further driving the nail in the coffin, at the same time, the line between console and PC becomes so blurred that "bring the PC to console" no longer has any real meaningful distinction.

So the whole thing is left with a complete identity crisis that really means nothing, it was never as broad from the start as PlayStation nor as specific as Nintendo, they toss out every niche that could have made sense as the third wheel, so it becomes pointless.

I'm really sad to see it, I loved the original, I loved the 360, but I've never touched a One or a Series X, I can't even tell you off the top of my head what even published by Microsoft I've even played since 2013.

Its death started in the 360 era due to RROD.

360 was fun but RROD had to turn off a lot of consumers. And it wasn't going to help the next box.

And then of course X1 really sealed the deal.

But 360 had a chance to really hurt Sony as Sony "X1'd" before X1 with the $600 PS3 and hard to develop for cell processor. RROD held the 360 back. And by the end of the generation, PS3 sales topped 360 sales.

that's what a lot people don't understand with the meme of "Xbox is dead". it has been a slow process but the seeds where planted since the second half of the 360.

Xbox is not dead and the joke is on everyone saying otherwise. Xbox SDK is actively being updated: https://github.com/XboxDev/nxdk/compare/2aab910b17b648e31403bcee629a54adf74ce501...master

Updated tools, expanded Xbox branding, and the zero exclusive policy. Phil is just getting started.
It's dead dude. This was the final nail in the coffin. Cancelling Perfect Dark, Everwild, 2 of the biggest exclusives they had is showing how out of focus they are. They couldn't even pull it together to turn them into multi-platform games.

They don't know how to be a good publisher. SEGA transitioned into a successful 3rd party by continuing their pipeline and making good games after the Dreamcast. Panzer Dragoon Orta, JSRF, Otogi, Gunvalkyrie, Skies of Arcadia Legends, Virtua Fighter 4... I mean they still knocked it out of the park in the GC/PS2/Xbox era. Yeah they had some duds, but considering the position they were in compared the billions of dollars Microsoft has...

This is a total fuck up. This is utter mis-management. One studio after the other, every year. Nobody knows what the fuck they are doing anymore. Cancelling games left and right, just to keep game pass afloat and for what? Some lofty dream to be the Netflix of games?

They had a chance and they failed, miserably. It's sad in a way cuz Sony has totally fucked this Gen too in terms of games, and they are being rewarded for it just because Microsoft went full retarded.

They went from being a major competitor in the console space to... trading blows with the Steam deck? Are you fucking kidding me? In 5 years?

Massive failure. If they could get their head out of their ass, maybe just maybe they could be a great publisher. But the writing on the wall seems like this is just the sad beginning. All of the great studios under their wing being mis-managed are on the chopping block.
