The fact that Sony gamers always say "you do understand a controller comes with the system" shows you that they really are a single player gaming household. They are only thinking about themselves and not their friends or siblings etc. I probably have 10-15 controllers in my house amongst different systems so yeah I get wanting to bring controllers forward.

The moment you make a feature optional you condemn it to an existence as an underused gimmick.
Abandoning the old stuff is the only way to ensure that the new stuff is actually used.

But where is the limit?

New controller every gen?
Every second gen?
Every third gen?

I get it why it sucks to buy new controllers, but I also get that new gen gives the opportunity to get new features

Or should wii(u) controllers work on every switch game?

Or ps2 controller on PS5

It looks like xbox didn't add anything new so then it is logical to have old ones working too

I have 4 x DS4 and I almost never play local multiplayer games, so single player gamers know the feeling too. (And 30-60 older gen controllers on multiple boxes)

If gen lasts 6-8 years, buying controllers isnt that expensive on total sum, and those siblings/friends can bring/buy their own controller, right?

At least here all console gamers I know have Playstation so it's not an issue because everybody have controllers

DS4s go 25-35€/used now so it's not like they would be that expensive to buy on launch and sell later, just have to be smart and sell them before next gen if they are not needed.

I guess local coop isnt as big thing anymore as it used to be, almost 100% of people I know play online.

Absolutely. I'd be sad if I had to repurchase 3 new controllers every gen.

In this scenario, they'd only need to program for haptic feedback, which some/most would do anyways. Sony would then handle the 'downgrade' to regular rumble automatically, if the game registrered a legacy controller.

Do you think support for haptic feedback is a requirement in every single game released for the PS5?

No one should expect a revolution with every generation, but everyone should expect an evolution with every generation. It has literally been this way since the first consoles. The only ones to stay stuck in the mud with multiple console gens have been MS.

that's not how it works.
to my knowledge most devs have team of 1-3 programmers for rumble/haptics, don't know really what sony has to do with helping them? and why they should do it in the first place if they want it to support haptics for PS5?

I tell what would happen in my house:

Game A: it uses haptic and feedback. Kid A has the new controller at hand. Kid C has an old PS4 controller. A bloodbath is assured and I, as a parent, would have to take away gaming rights to everyone for a couple of days. Everyone cries and shout.

Please no: same controllers!

Sony could easily create auto-support for legacy controllers if they wanted. I'd imagine you knew that, considering you apparantly know how many people are working on that part of games. If Sony wanted to support older controllers, devs wouldn't have to put any thought to it at all, since it was the OS it self that did the downgrade.

So yes, that is how it works.

Did you have a 360? If so, how many controllers did you have for it? They don't work on Xbox One.
I wasn't sad my PS3 controllers didn't work on my PS4. They were shit controllers. I don't care that PS4 controllers won't work for PS5 games.
It's great that Series X controller is pretty much just a Xbox One controller with a share button, I guess.

I did, yes, and I was annoyed that the controllers didn't work on my XB1, since they were fantastic. But I guess the lack of compability isn't an issue if the controllers are "shit", as you put it.

Disagree. Local coop which is what I assume you mean by couch gaming is personally a big missing feature. And I hear the same among friends and family. No one wants to carry a system over to someone else's place for a 4 hour gaming session and a beer.

I don't think it's a requirement but it's the only option developers have when it comes to vibration. They can't use rumble because the DualSense doesn't have the old motors.

Because they have Series Xs. Microsoft didn't send PS5s to any Japanese if I'm not mistaken. Both companies are trying to avoid comparisons for some reason. It's just my theory BTW but there could be other reasons.

May be because too much negativity was spread from western inflencers about Sony and PS5 in the last 12 months.

Sony: If all in the west will deny me success then all on the west will die. I have suffered from western inflencers for long enough. Their time has come to an end. 😂😂😂
