Oh man, I'm surprised they didn't wipe you from existence for that, you can't simply go suggesting things willy nilly, you might end up coming to a conclusion. Seriously though, it does feel off that things would get that organically crazy but if it did and that is where they are coming to get away from life for a minute then fuck, I can't even begin to imagine what hell their lives are off of the internet. It's kind of ironic that they've went off on Cyberpunk 2077 with such hate cause the social themes of a cyber dystopia are what is seeding among them right now.
 
Not surprised, GAF is a lot better than the other site. Those folks there are crazy and love to ban for the flimsiest of reasons.

GAF is also a place where people of differing opinions can discuss while the other place is an echo chamber.
 
Do I understand correctly, that Era banned discussion of Cyberpunk?

I went there, and I see one Cyberpunk thread, pinned to the top of the first page: "CDPR is a transphobic company, it's time we stop making excuses for them." It is 99 pages long. 99 pages. I see no other Cyberpunk thread. They literally banned discussion of the game, unless you want to do in the context of a politicized discussion about trans people? Good lord.

And the Nintendo General Discussion thread is subtitled, "Trans rights are human rights." :messenger_dizzy:

WTF. I left there years ago, but I assumed -- wrongly -- that cooler heads would eventually prevail, and they would ease up a bit on the lefty authoritarian craziness. But no. It just keeps going. If anything, it's gotten worse. Insane.

I noticed that too. I visit there from time to time and the place has really gone down the shitter. It keeps getting progressively worse and the fact they can't discuss videogames without shit getting political is just bizarre. A videogame forum that is preoccupied with politics more than actual videogames, sheesh.
 
Good stuff. I like the fact that people put effort into posts here so they are better articulated than something like a YouTube comment. At the same time people don't get into mad deep arguments here.
 
I don't see how era members coming here is a good thing. I mean, it's a good thing financially i guess but isn't it best for them to be contained into the asylum instead of infesting this place?

And for any era member reading this, sorry but you knew what kind of place that was for years now, yet you decided to stay there. That says a lot about you IMO, especially if the only reason you are here is becauser you got banned there.

So, what are the precautions and defensive mechanisms in GAF so these people not get control of it again?

Sure it's a useful container for the crazy people - but not everyone there is straight up crazy. Lots of people left GAF for greener pastures just because they wanted to follow their friends to where the action is/was. "There is no such thing as a good conservative" is something they like to spout off all the time, let's not stoop to their level of intolerance. Everyone who comes back will be judged on their individual actions and ideas. If those ideas don't stand up to scrutiny then they're not going to last long here anyway. The people who made fools of themselves as they were leaving have already been banned and likely won't be able to come back even if they want to.

I know this is mind-blowing but a lot of people didn't see the intolerance till quite some time later.

I quit posting here after the site shut down and didn't pay much mind to the politics, I just went there to discuss shit.

It wasn't after the two events I referenced earlier that I realized what kind of weird place I was in.

I wouldn't call myself a "Reeeeeeturner" necessarily. I always maintained my account here but just didn't post all that much - I did check in every now and again - and focused on Resetera because that's where the newest gaming talk was.

Especially when, as referenced earlier, NeoGAF shut down in 2017 (albeit just for a short time).. I was thinking initially that GAF was done and that Resetera was the new GAF. Like pre-2017 GAF, Resetera's politics didn't match my own (far from it), so I just stayed away from that... I barely posted unless it was carefully worded because it was clear that you could get permabanned easily for merely having a different opinion against the majority.

TLDR: Glad I'm back at GAF and that GAF is thriving. GAF is working like an actual forum where different thought is encouraged too, so there's that.

Their gaming OTs get thousands of posts quickly. Tons of people post there just to discuss games. Tons of people who post there create high quality threads too.

If you actually stand for free speech, then it shouldn't matter at all who signs up in theory. You create fair rules, and have fair mods enforce the rules. If they follow the rules they stay, and if not they get warned and then banned. All you're doing is just grilling people that literally hate SJWs and want to discuss video games.

I started at ResetEra, but Black Chamber getting banned was the last straw for me, so I decided to give this place a shot finally (obviously, I've known about NeoGAF, but I usually prefer sticking to a single community in terms of game discussion instead of juggling multiple places). Anyways, happy to be here and not feel like I'm walking on eggshells when discussing a game. ResetEra has far too many people power tripping, and I'm betting it'll be the death of that place in some form or another.

I distinctly remember not being able to access the site. Maybe I was nuts. I thought the site got shut down and people moved to Ree. I was always there to shitpost about games and politics, I didn't follow too much of the mod / admin drama.

As far as the great exodus occurring right now, this appears to be completely due to Cyberpunk 2077.

Which is fucking amazing.

I check era daily because I found it had more info and more people discussing games, I just stopped coming on this forum because last time I checked it looked a little dead to me.

That being said, I hate these brainwashed woke sjw and would just mute threads and users that were pushing their shit agenda. I just can't stand that place anymore, and all the shitshow with cyberpunk was the last nail in the coffin for me.
 
quite alot of people still dont realise that era is not a gaming forum...it might pretend to be one but it was pretty clear what was starting to happen after a few months
the same people that made this place a shithole became admins over there and the same groups of assholes here pretty much setup shop over there

there's also a large chunk of people that followed the communities over and in most cases they dont go into the political threads but when the political crap started to infest into their areas
and now that place has became a worse version of Gaf prior to the purge.

This place has a pretty good mix of left and right views but its gaming first and foremost and culture around that and we can actually have discussion about things
Enjoy this as its not everyday cancer cuts itself out and walks away to grow somewhere else

Yeah I got temp ban a couple years ago multiple times for having a differing opinion. I finally got permabanned after losing my shit and making fun of a girl in news story they posted, named 'Dirreah' or something like that. I said 'WHY would someone name their kid after a horrible bodily function' I got banned for being insensitive or some stupid shit like that. Glorious.
