Hospital I work at are literally getting 70 ER visits a day..we had to open an old unused unit for more ER beds..
Another hospital is using the hallways for ER patients..

It's become heavily politicized. I go from one county to another to work, from a deep blue county to a deep red one. The difference is huge in terms of mask compliance. A giant chunk of the country thinks it is their patriotic duty to not wear masks to express their freedom.
A decent chunk of people don't think COVID is real, and basically think its the flu. Our media is significantly worse than most developed nations, and so distrust is at an all time high. A lot of people get their information online from untrustworthy sources. Multiple leaders also created a climate of mixed messages and resentment.
Our population is extremely unhealthy. Obesity, diabetes, hypertension, poor diet, poor work / life balance, increasing addiction / depression rates.
Our population tolerates extreme poverty. Lack of basic healthcare, lack of quality education, lack of COVID assistance during lockdowns, growing personal debt, lots of employers not protecting employees with proper practices while they are shielded from liability.
COVID is exposing the multiple levels of societal dysfunction present in America that have needed attention for decades: poor education, poor health, extreme inequality, corrupt and paralyzed government, corrupt media, growing partisan divide, lack of ability for country to unify around important goals. It's a stress test of how well we're functioning as a society, and we're not getting high marks.

The US is an amalgamation of different states all doing different things, as it should be. And it is becoming obvious that most of the measures being taken are completely ineffective. You have states like Florida and Texas basically open. Then you’ve got states like California and New York relatively shut down. It doesn’t seem to be making a meaningful difference.
Hard lockdowns will obviously work, temporarily. But they are damaging, unsustainable, and the benefits fade quickly whenever we reopen. At some point we’re going to have to get on with it. Try our best to control what you can within your own life and stop trying to control everyone else. It’s not working anyway and it’s just making people angry with each other. Worry about what you can control.

The UK is pretty much locked down in most places around England. Scotland is doing it's own thing, fully locked down as is Wales.

So, what is the point of a lockdown, disrupting the economy even more, if people aren't even abiding by the guidelines, might as well just open the shops back up to let the economy find its feet again, it won't differ much from now with how people are behaving.

Gave up a long time ago. Where I live, the restaurants, bars, and supermarkets are full of people not wearing masks or following any guidelines whatsoever.

Seems like the sane thing to do would be to protect those most vulnerable populations and get them the targeted aid they need instead of crippling the economy and ruining people's lives with sweeping and indefinite lockdowns and restrictions.
The problem with that is you still have the possibility of contamination from health workers and family members, unless you also lockdown just health workers and stop people seeing their families.

Shutting down the entire country or entire regions does not work. Making healthy people suffer and lose their livelihoods because there's a possibility of spreading to grandma if other people are irresponsible is not a sane policy.
Would have been great if the aid had been targeted and the "most vulnerable" could have been better protected, but that was never in the cards.

My relatives in the US caught it. They're in their 70s. Very mild symptoms. It's very hard to draw any conclusions from the published stats when 1. They're incomplete (e.g. if testing increases, you're gonna have more cases, but I didn't see any metrics for how much testing was being done); 2. There is an atypically high variance in symptoms; 3. The left has history of crying wolf and messing with statistics; 4. The media has been caught lying repeatedly for years.

I don't think there is such a thing as a right approach, people hailed Swedens approached, and look what has happened there.

I'll be very honest. I had no hopes about my country but I expected the US to do much better. Pop culture really portrays you all much better than you guys are. The politicization of a disease, that's just petty politics. Many of your politicians in power spread lies about vaccines and masks, that's just disgusting even moreso considering they are the first ones getting the vaccines now. I thought US would be like NZ. Those guys are roaming mask free now. Who knew wearing masks and following guidelines rather than bitching about them would keep the virus in control? NZ, and now look at them.

That is with no one taking any precautions. Imagine if no one from the start of pandemic was taking precautions then the deaths and cases would have been higher. Comparing apples to oranges over here. You can't even account for the loss to patients of other diseases, my friend's mum has cancer but the doctor advised to skip treatments due to the precautions and how the hospitals are full, I imagine similar case in US and that too with other diseases too.
