I'll be honest. I'm sad that the section is gone but not because it was a good place to have some honest political discussion but it was just hilarious reading it.

I just looked up some of the characters I remember from browsing Usenet when I was like 12 and the first Google link from one of the more rational dudes I remembered arguing against weird libertarians and super racists is this (from years later):

Haha I was thinking what the fuck did I say to piss off the crazies again to get reported, yeah that forum was a cluster fuck of an echo chamber and doesn't need to be on a gaming website, good riddance in this day and age nothing good comes from discussing politics, people are too polarized online and imo it was dragging the whole site down

I've been here since the gaming-age days when visiting this (and other) forum was pure joy.

Then the social media explosion happened and everyone had to show every shitty aspect of their worthless existence.

Fuck politics. Ban all political discussion. Make the internet the awesome place it was.

Sure, ideal if all side disarm. Sadly, the balance of power is out of whack.
 
I'm a little lttp here, but I definitely don't support removing politics discussions from GAF. It was one of the few places where people could talk without getting insta-banned for not being extreme leftists. Sure there were many shitty threads (and users) as well, but I think it could've been allowed to exist with better moderation.

Too many people adhering to white supremacist ideology were crapping that section up. Too many people were DRAWN to the forum because those people weren't being banned so they thought they were safe to spread their racism here, too. Evilore did the right thing. That place was toxic. A lot of us reasonable posters tried to ignore them but ignoring doesn't work. Better to not leave something up where people get the wrong idea about this forum and further try to crap the place up.
 
Didn't really visit that section, but good move. Never felt it has any place on a Gaming forum and Off-Topic already covers interesting enough threads that have nothing to do with it; Communities as well to some extent.

We can have open discourse ... but not everything is a battle. Not everything is a race war.

Not everything needs to be discussed. If you're looking for strictly conservative, possibly far right, talk... maybe Parler is a better match for politics for you?

Because your charged response to me was reasonable and measured? Maybe your right, discussing politics should be forbidden when you have an imbalance of immature posters around.

Goldie Locks snuck in to the Resetera forum, but their porridge was too left wing.
Then Goldie locks went to Parler, but their porridge was too right wing.
Finally, Goldie locks had come across ??????? and their porridge was straight down the middle.
 
The right move, very probably. It was a pretty divisive forum, with a lot of people talking past one another and nothing much constructive being established.

Edit: I would add that for anyone who is incensed, angered, upset or enraged by this decision... it might be healthy to take a look at how much time you're spending online, and how much importance you are assigning it in your life. It is not good for anyone's mental health to see online forums as anything more than a light and easy way to piss away your time when you don't have anything better to do.

It never was an open disussion. it was a majority of far right posters agreeing with each other and 2 or 3 far left trolls playing the Devil's woke advocate.

Dude... no politics discussion here... Parler is the only other conservative place I know of... And it seems like it's no or little moderation there. Far right, far left... Folks calling the politics forum the only decent place on here ... the only place that some folks had free reign to talk crap... but folks usually go too far. Never saw you in Politics but I tried to get along with everyone.

Shmunter is a right leaning guy... But some of his posts... I'll just leave it at that.

You just gave the reason why something like that doesn't need to exist. Also, just check the ban list for the last few days and it's an immense number of users banned for endorsing white supremacy.

Not related to you, but it's quite strange that if someone doesn't want white supremacist shitting up the board, is immediately considered far left.
 
I also think it was the right move for NeoGAF. After all, the roots of this forum are gaming and not politics or other topics.

If you let something like this develop freely, then at some point it becomes impossible to moderate if you want to be open to all sides. For this reason, you can't compare it to ResetEra or other forums, left or right, because there is a very clear political sentiment there that doesn't allow any free discourse. This makes it quite easy to moderate.

Viewed detached from NeoGAF, you can of course ask yourself whether such a step does not go exactly in the wrong direction when people simply resign and instead of free exchange of opinions they think it is better to allow none at all. But as I said, that only applies if you ignore what NeoGAF actually is or should be.

Genuinely not even joking about this, a woman when I was doing the night shift had her face covered in grey paint.

Frightened the shit out of me. Had no idea if she needed help or some baby-wipes.

She was CAKED in it. And that's when I learned people like sniffing paint.

wtf Twitter is literally the worst social media platform for discussing politics. It's got a massive bot problem, people are more interested in saying controversial things just to get clicks and attention, not that they necessarily even agree with themselves, and most of the people on there aren't interested in having an open discussion, and how could you when you're limited to the amount of words you can put up
