Bike thrown at NY subway track

Was this accidental or malicious do you think? (not an east coaster, is this a common issue)?

Hella expensive on a city that's already hurting bad...shame

Has to happen a lot without guard rails not to mention unreported instances. Before subways arrived you just walked down a damn street.

It's a short circuit between the electricity-conducting third rail and the running rails (which acts as ground). Good example of why your subway should have screen doors on the platforms.

For once New Yorkers can be glad there's tons of public surveillance. They'll catch this guy. If its an honest accident fine but they should still pay a fine.

From floods to e-bikes being left on subway tracks, I wonder what's next. New York seems to be the centre of all disaster films, seems like it will all be a reality.

Yeah, I wasn't expecting all of that sparks and smokes. I do wonder even with all of the cameras what if the person was wearing a mask, since covid.

Never understood why there aren't guard rails
Sounds logical. But the probably dont do it because if there's a mechanical failure with a guard rail or gate, nobody can get in or out. Also, the gate would have to always be going up or down after each load, so if someone is standing near it, it'll hit them.

If it's a stationary mini guard rail, the trains would need to align at each one perfectly which isnt going to happen. And you'd still have risk of people tripping on it.

Still seems worth solving those problems when you compare it to babies rolling onto the track and stuff

As someone said in the Reddit thread, back in the old days, like the Cold War or WW2, bullshit like this would be thought of as sabotage. Granted, it could be some scrub-ass hobo tossing his bike on the tracks to chase down some rat for lunch. Because New York.

I was thinking more along the lines of somebody trying to damage the bike, not the subway lol
