He makes YouTube content and the attempt at attention towards the channel he puts content on is almost certainly for financial gain either from monetization revenue or sponsorship deals, and he's even still in videogames. How the heck is that "retired"?

It definitely is. Remember the whole "6ix9ine" debacle? It has showed us that getting a lot attention doesn't automatically result in respect, neither does it result into longevity. He only was relevant for his antics, but his songs didn't have any staying power. He charted high, and fell off of soon after, until he did the next stupid thing. No one was really listening to him, they only wanted to see the clown do his thing.
Getting a rise out of people by selling controversy is nothing new, but if it's literally all have to offer, then you will end as a one trick pony and in the long run you've haven't earned much, and most certainly not a fanbase.
Same applies here. Jaffe now has attention, which is why he is milking this, but he won't earn any respect and most certainly won't win any fans over this.

The dude just wants metroid to be Contra or some other platformer with guns. I don't understand why he wants to phase out metroid's formula that many people still love.
Exploration and the testing of the environment is still fun for many of us.
Him finding that Nintendo put out a video to make the game's objective more explicit for a wider audience doesn't mean the game has a bad design. It's more of an equivalent to a booster seat that allows babies to sit at a well designed table for adults.

As a fellow older gamer I can relate to struggling with games some have zero problems with. But he should’ve walked away a long time ago. It’s clearly not for him. Could’ve used the time to play something he actually like instead.
I’m closing in on my 100% run now, gray beard and all, it’s not a piece of cake but it’s definitely doable even for us oldies.

There's some times where you can point to specific things that ARE badly designed, though. If you can articulate the reasons why, it's not "lazy".
One example this year that springs to mind is the end game design from Outriders, wherein the developers forced everyone into a pure DPS glass cannon build if they wanted to have a chance of getting the best drops in a run. By making everything based solely on completion time, they removed the ability for players to have tank or healer builds, because there was simply no way for players to finish the challenges under the time limits, if they wanted to get a Gold tier drop (and the drop rates were remarkably stingy anyways). For a game that had a ton of good mods to customize your character, the end game was most definitely "bad game design".

Well, of course. But I don't think that is what we are talking about here. Dread has design choices from a series that pioneered a genre. You can dislike those design choices and wish it were modernized, but that doesn't make it bad design. It's like comparing modern open world designs to the games that proceeded them that lacked in game maps, quest markers and fast travel. I understand why those modern niceties are appreciated, but I personally loathe them. What good is an open world if you can't be lost? My expectations of the genre is just different and counters what a modern audience wants and what modern designers are trying to accomplish. I don't think design philosophy is bad.
And again, I struggle to understand how anyone can be lost in Dread. It funnels down the critical path. I'm not a super skilled gamer either. And I'm not defending Dread either, it's mostly just an okay game.
Since you mentioned Outriders, I'd say that is a bad game that has a few really, really good ideas in it. The loot customization system is amazing.

I'd argue the majority of anyone's audience probably doesn't post comments or on gaming forums. Even if the majority of Jaffe's audience disagrees with him in this scenario, they are more apt to shrug and move on than to kick internet rocks at him.

Played through the game a third time and first hard mode playtrhough.
The room he b*tched on about has both two crawling enemies on a breakable wall and two flying enemies above the same. Also have breakable blocks different shadow. What do his advocates expect, how should a game signal something without making it insultingly handholding?

Yeah dislikes unfortunately pays the bills as well on Youtube. But he could’ve just bought some stocks if that’s his motivation, and spent the time playing something he actually like, the earnings from one single Nvidia stock during October alone would’ve payed for Dread.

I take back what I said after playing through the game. Jaffe is being dramatic lol.
The game is great. Blocks hidden in the geometry is not my favorite design choice, but it has only stumped me twice, and briefly at that.

You should try looking into the fighting game genre if you want to experience game design clearly not meant for gamers new to the genre. I’m sure I’m getting old and slow but frame counting and move cancelling and the crazy stick wiggling going on right now is complete madness as far as I’m concerned. I just don’t see how anyone can do that with actual control. I still wouldn’t say it’s bad game design, it’s just a bummer I never invested any time into the genre early on while it evolved into what it is today, feels like it’s not worth the time needed to get good now. I’m mashing buttons and looking at the pretty graphics at this point.
Regarding Metroid Dread. It’s awesome. It’s a real shame you missed the earlier games and can’t fully enjoy this. For me it’s the best thing I’ve played in decades. Finished it awhile ago, closing in on my first 100% run now, doing a parallell playthrough with the kids as well. Possibly the easiest GOTY choice I’ve ever experienced

I disagree with your take on the game, but it's just an opinion about a game - not a personal attack on anyone (maybe the Metroid devs, but you're allowed to feel differently than they do). FYI, I think you'd enjoy watching a video of the final boss fight. Reminds me of God of War actually, or Dragon Ball Z.
P.S. You could probably pull off a crazy publicity drive for your channel doing a playthrough of this game for charity or something. If that early room in the game has grown your channel this much, just imagine the sparks flying off your subscriber numbers if you try to get some of the more devious secrets in this game lol. I want to see a Jaffe shinespark 100% video. Just make sure to pad your room first so you don't punch any holes in the walls.

You can disagree with the phrasing and my words are a little muddled for the point I was trying to convey. Youtube comments are largely pointless to the veracity of an argument presented by any creator.
That's not the argument though. And I'm not defending Jaffe's viewpoint here as per the usual, it feels clickbait'ish. My point was that the majority of people in any audience aren't going to comment and that by human nature, without incentive, you are far more likely to critique or comment on something when dissatisfied. It's why I have a hard time wanting to look at a yelp review, user ratings for movies or games, or comment sections on a video or article. This incident spawned two threads and while there is some measured responses, that's juxtaposed by all sorts of nonsense including some really fucked up comments to David and his family. Thankfully those were deleted. The only thing I really agree with his stance is that Nintendo's fanbase tends to be one of the more overly defensive among gaming communities (See the reaction to Gerstmann's Mario Sunshine review). That's all to say that I find discussion a more meaningful measuring stick than rankings, ratings, ratios and whatnot.

The enemies on the ceiling should get you to shoot at it, and the enemies above the breakable blocks should pull your attention, there’s a lot going on up there. You also just jumped up through an area that’s way more constrained than most, hinting that sections you can and can’t pass through are less than black and white. Not ever using the aim takes most of that away (and rz/rl and r/l should be swapped), but I don’t know if that’s in the designers. That’s a mechanic that feels new and clearly communicated to players, and not just, you need to know Metroid, to know what to do. And how do you start a new game and not press all the buttons first :/
And if he has played Metroid before, that’s Metroid 101, though you usually bomb down at a section like that. I’m kind of surprised by how long you don’t have bombs this time.
I got through there pretty quickly (I’m not streaming but my kids start getting impatient if I get stuck), and I was honesty just surprised that there was an area like that that still, the rest of the game has been pretty streamlined.
In Super Metroid there were sections that I thought I was exploring on my own and finding secrets, but it ended up being a necessary item, and for me those moments were the most memorable part of the game. Really glad that Dread didn’t remove this entirely.

It's a video game, man. I think it's got some bad design in it. Also think there's some cool stuff in it. Even the BEST games I've ever designed had crap in them.
Beyond THAT it's all a question of delivery.
I appreciate and understand a number of you don't like the way I delivered it. I get it. But all you do when you push on me to change the delivery is make me want to triple down. Because I just find the whole thing so fascinating/funny/disturbing why ANYONE cares so much about what someone says about a game (or any creative product).
For ex: I LOVE Phil Collins and Taylor Swift and Adam Sandler comedies and the show Supergirl. Oh, and Auburn football. Hell, I even like some songs by Nickleback (Burn it to the Ground is fantastic). All of these things are widely hated and mocked. And guess what? I still love them and am very public about my love for them and I genuinely don't care if people mock these things. Hell, in the case of Supergirl, I even GET and agree it's pretty bad...but I still love it. I guess what I'm asking is: why do you care SO MUCH?
And before you ask me why I do, let's be clear (again): Video #1 I cared. All the other videos I cared about putting out content that was honest and engaging but I had already said what I wanted to say about Metroid. After that it's just been fun marketing and money making.
