good one! imagine looking straight and not having blinders on each side of your eyes! have you used a vr headset? i'm not saying 180 degrees of full focused vision. i'm saying when the headset is 110 degrees, it's like having very snug ski goggles on. very claustrophobic, distracting, not immersive. if this shit really were amazing, then everyone would be playing solely VR games. it's not. and FOV is a HUGE part of that. send all the lolz gifs you want. just stating facts. ever hear of the pimax vr? what could that FOV be?? man, if only i could search that on a device. oh shit! yeah, it's 200 degrees. send them your horse gif! so good!

PSVR 2 will not be using Virtual Link or compressed hevc video over USB. They are using a USB C DP alt mode standard that carries a Displayport signal, USB 3.1, and up to 100W power. DP Alt mode can do 4K60 without compression and up to 8K with lossless display stream compression (DSC), not to be confused with HEVC. In order for PSVR2 to work on PC, it has to support USB C DP Alt mode or there has to be some kind of workaround.

Will Sony provide drivers for PC to be compatible with it officially? I hope so

Ohhhh... I believe the Porn App should be made to use PSVR2... it is on the Porn side.
Of course I'm supposing Sony will enable PSVR2 SDK for Apps and not only games.

They look like Quest controllers, but with Dual Sense haptic rumble. Should have the PS5 trigger resistance stuff as well. Quest controllers work on Alyx, but it doesn't have individual finger tracking.

I can think of some whys...

- PSVR2 doesn't work standalone like Quest 2.
- PSVR2 doesn't have batteries like Quest 2.
- PSVR2 is made for PS5 only.
- PSVR2 delivery the same high quality experience for everybody.

Aren't they practically the same thing? Isn't VirtualLink just like a brand name?

It's all just a USB-C port with 10 Gb/s data, 32 Gb/s bandwidth for A/V, that can also power the headset right?

Its all that's necessary for outputting 2160p, 120 Hz, HDR10, 4:2:2 YUV video. Same as the PS5 HDMI Out port.

No internal speakers on the headset? I never game with headphones, I think it's bad enough on Quest 2 to not see what's going on outside, not hearing anything too would get me anxious.

Also the bandwidth requirements might be a lot higher for PSVR2 which is why they are using USB Type C. Not to mention there's no audio box for it so the PS4 needs to process the audio itself instead of using dedicated hardware like Tempest for example.

I have the original PSVR and the library was really underwhelming. I also hated the breakout box, it looked like my PS4 had messy dreads. I see this only has one cable which is much better. I still don't see a huge library of games though. Teasing us with Horizon isn't going to make me jump until there are probably 5/6 of these types of experiences.

Therefore I will probably only purchase two of these.

DisplayPort over USB-C uses USB-C Alt Mode that allow all the 4 lanes to be used for Display Port... that means 8.1 Gbps per lane... 32.4Gbps.

In USB-C 3.2 Gen1 mode it uses only 1 lane... so 10Gbps.
But if it uses the 4 lanes it is called USB 3.2 Gen 2 that allows 40Gbps.

It almost assuredly uses display port alt mode to increase bandwidth over 30 gbps like what virtual link was suppose to do. 10 gbps is not enough bandwidth for VR unless compression is being used. The ps5 would have to encode to hevc and the headset would have to then decode it. I don't think Sony is using this method otherwise wifi 6 would easily suffice for wireless play and Sony was toying with a patent for hgig which isn't needed unless you're going for raw high bandwidth signal.

Foveated rendering
Foveated rendering is a rendering technique which uses an eye tracker integrated with a virtual reality headset to reduce the rendering workload by greatly reducing the image quality in the peripheral vision (outside of the zone gazed by the fovea).

A less sophisticated variant called fixed foveated rendering doesn't utilise eye tracking and instead assumes a fixed focal point.

With the PSVR2 having Eye Tracking, it pretty clear it's eye tracking foveated rendering or the eye tracker would be kind of useless.

Even the Petent mentions a Gaze Tracker.

It's basically what virtual link was trying to accomplish. If you read what virtual link is it's doing the same thing. Very few graphic cards have that virtual link USB port since it never got off the ground. I don't think any headsets released with that specification so we don't even know if the drivers are setup to even output through it.

When you've had a good wireless VR experience you realise it's a game changer. The freedom to move without tangling yourselves with cables is amazing.

i don't know about pimax but i don't think i doesn't have edges like human vision also more fov the blurier edges get 110 degrees is perfectly fine for mass consumer device.
i think ski google effect has more to do with size of lenses and how close your eyes are to lenses rather then fov.

In any case the USB-C with DP Alt Mode requires 4 lanes.
That gives us the below bandwidths:

32.4 Gbps (Raw)

4K@120Hz
8K@60Hz (w/DSC)

Alt Mode 2.0 (USB4)
80 Gbps (Raw)

You will ask me how USB 3.1/3.2 have 4 lanes for data transfer? Well actually USB 3.1/3.2 can have 2 lanes but it is bidirecional (2 for TX and 2 for RX)... DP AltMode just uses the RX lanes for TX... so 4 TX lanes.

PS. Not all USB 3.1/3.2 ports have 2 lanes... most have 1 but the PS5 one probably has 2.

Edit - Added pic showing the TX and RX lanes... I believe it explain better... there is a total of 4 lanes in USB Type C... 2 for TX and 2 for RX... each lane can travel 10Gbps... some ports lanes are implemented with half the bandwidth and/or half the pins that are tecnically called 1x1 or 2x1... but the full USB Type C pins use are called 2x2.

I use both, a cable works well for seated and static games but it's a major downgrade for games where you move around a lot.

There is one way it could work though, thread the cable through your clothes and up through the neckline of your clothes and up to the headset 💡

Its not gonna work with PS4s, PS4 games, DualShock 4s, the PS4 camera, or PS Move controllers.

Its gonna be PS5 only and PS5 games only. Maybe a DualSense will be able to be used for some games tho.

PSVR does not have speakers. Sony has not mentioned any speakers in their PSVR2 headset.

So it will most likely require use of headphones, same as PSVR. (They include a pair of wired earbuds in box.)

These are the two big questions of the moment.
I don't doubt it will work with PSVR1 games, but we need to know if those will display at the larger resolution and FoV, or we're getting super pixelated output on a 2K*2K / eye headset.

Also, driver for PC? It's using a single cable USB-C so I guess only the higher-end RTX2000 and RX 6800/6900 would support it natively, but maybe Sony or a third party will sell a breakout box adapter for DP/HDMI and USB power.
Valve developed a driver for DualSense to use on Steam games, so I think that much is guaranteed.

It's probably VirtualLink sans the name, though.
We're looking at DP1.4 HBR3, a USB connection for the sensors and haptic feedback and USB power.
At the very least, it's a custom protocol based off VirtualLink... but it's probably VirtualLink.
 
PS VR 3 is already in development, many refuse to accept VR. Buying the first PS VR I wasn't expecting the box and all the cords. That said you can't have ps vr 2 without Half Life.

While they aim to achieve the same thing, they are different standards with some differences in implementation. For example with virtual link the orientation of the cable matters while the USB C DP alt-mode standard works in either orientation.

It is not virtual link. Its USB C DP alt mode. They are not the same standards even when they aim to achieve the same thing.

Dont really care if its not standalone but do wish it was comepletely wireless that my main reason for not using psvr 1 more. Maybe the usb c is for some one time setup lol optimisticaly hoping

Eye-tracking and foveated rendering are a game-changer, especially so on a closed platform like PS5.

I expect some truly incredible looking games. Too bad for no wireless.

Half Life Alyx will be amazing on this headset, console players will finally experience true AAA VR gaming.
