Breaking: Microsoft to acquire Activision-Blizzard in near 70$ billion deal

It is really up to MS now to make these two acquisitions work. It is not crazy to argue that they have bought two companies that were accelerating into mediocracy.

Both Zenimax and Activision Blizzard are to some extent turn-around cases with very strong back catalogues. Interesting times.

They smelled blood in the water, that's for sure.

And even though I love Game Pass, I don't like monopolies, so this one has me a little worried about the state of the industry.

That does seem to be a killer blow. I've got an Xbox and PlayStation so it's no skin off my nose but there really is nothing Sony can do to respond to this.

It's like all the oil money coming into random Premier League clubs while giants like Man Utd and Liverpool have to sit there and watch themselves get left behind.

I never understood how Disney could just buy such huge chunks of the film industry, and if Microsoft can buy ActiBlizz without a hassle, something is wrong with the monopoly structure in the US.

hmm. maybe it was typed up on the 14th and only went public today?

i'm sure they were getting all their ducks in order and had to wait for some kind of market deadline? i don't know.
Yeah. Says "REDMOND, Wash. and Santa Monica, Calif. – Jan. 18, 2022" in the article its self.

Board agrees to deal. Signs purchase agreement. Final approval put up to shareholder vote. The shareholder vote will be a mere formality considering all the index players.
I'm more of a forex guy than stocks, but pretty sure this deal is assuming a 100% control of the shares. So technically they wouldn't really pay 70B, but a specific price per share that would add up to 70B should all investors decide to sell.
Pretty weird though, normally these sort of deals are announced way before and allow competitors to make counter offers, etc.
Something feels off to me, but again, stocks is not my forte.

Been enjoying GamePass on my PC, but this will probably get me to buy a Series X when I can get one. The glut of new stuff on GamePass is going to be HUGE.

yeah this isn't a over night deal

Dude, I'm more sided with MS this gen but these recent buys are disgusting.
Yeah at first i thought great, more free games on Game Pass, but on the other hand it's dangerous. Imagine them also getting EA or Rockstar. That would be game over for Sony and all gamers would suffer on the long term.

Yeah, like japan would make a difference without call of duty and other big hitters

No, but now they are between a rock and a hard place. Microsoft may (will) become the place to be for people wanting to play western games in the upcoming years. As for getting Japanese games, the Switch has it covered, and probably increasingly so; thus, I'm wondering where Sony goes from here beyond their undeniably strong (but probably insufficient) first party games.
I don't have a dog in this race, I own a Switch and a PC. But it's funny to see everything unfolding.

This would be a nightmare to get theough if it goes to Congress for anti competitive stuff.

I don't see cod being exclusive, I'm sure it would be a timed exclusive

>CoD
Same game since 2007, last ones are especially awful apparently
>WoW
Hasn't been good for a decade
>Overwatch
Pretty much dead and 0 hype for "2"
>Diablo
Nothing will be ever as good as 2 anyway
>Tony Hawk
Maybe a remake or two, but don't expect anything new
>Spyro
Dead
>Crash
4 was okay I guess.

So it's nothing then, no reason to buy a zombie company.
Username checks out

Holy shit it's real.

Massive purchase from MS and at a pretty good time as they can blame all the issues on the previous administration and, if they are smart, really turn things around for some of these IP's

Kotick out had to be part of this deal. Though he probably got a nice chunk of that payday.

*edit - I guess not. Its probably to big a move to make during an acquisition. They must want to phase him out though

This is the best thing that can happen to Activision with the way things have been going. I'd be fucking stoked if I was an employee.

So what, is Microsoft just going to buy everyone? Not a fan. I mean at least the silver lining is that activision Blizzard is terrible and doesn't make good games anymore.
