BREAKING: Sony is acquiring Bungie for 3.6b

This makes sense, especially as a counter to MS nearly cornering the FPS market. The price tag is not that high when you look at Bungie's revenue.

I think they should pump some money into them to expand, and work on more than one IP/game at once.

Why would they buy Konami? Is Sony opening a Pachinko parlour or an chain of gyms? They should focus on video game developers.

Remember, Sony isn't just trying to buy up legacy IP catalogs, they're looking for people to make games that will sell systems.
True and I don't think Konami has any studios left, correct?

Problem w/ that is Bungie isn't even made up of the same team as it once was in it's glory days. In similar fashion as Rare. They still put out out good stuff just no where near the capability to even begin to try and bargain w/ MS when they have all the major FPS's via Bethesda/Activision, COD included, in their pocket now.

Seems like they did this to slightly offset eventual revenue losses. Nothing more, nothing less. Revenue wise, it's a good move which is pretty much all Jimbo cares about these days.
That is a talking point, not a problem. Bungie's teams still know how to make a shooter that feels good. This is certainly about revenue too, but ignoring their technology as it relates to shooters is insane.

I'm cracking up at the posts about departed talent. Was Destiny PS a stealth exclusive all along? It's the only way the departed talent talking point makes any sense.

You know what would crack me up. Is if Microsoft and Sony are secretly having calls and meetings like " apple and tencent, Facebook, they are trying to get into gaming…..let's just all buy as much shit as we can and keep everything multi platform between us so these fucks can't force their way in"

that's my dream anyway.

You had one job Sony….

Yes Sony doesn't purchase publishers and 3rd party IP like MS does, but to protect other 3rd party Ip's being bought by MS, Sony needs to do the same.

But Bungie?? Fuck me Jim is so out of touch. Bungie have no relevant IP. Or loved much.
They could of bought Square, Sega, Capcom for a bit more money.

Bungie….. ffs Sony

Bungie prints money with D2. So from a financial perspective, I can see the benefit of this deal. Also, the fact that Sony wants to leverage Bungie's expertise in developing GaaS games for their own WWS games.

Other than that, it's hard to see the intent behind this. Unless Bungie themselves approached Sony for this acquisition to secure their studio future. They could also make new IP exclusive for PS platforms while using the D2 revenues to offset their dev costs. Their IP makes them a strong candidate for acquisition because any development is low risk because of the sheer amount of recurring revenue Destiny 2 generates for Bungie.
It's been set up more like a partnership which is a good way to do it if you are going to bring something under your umbrella that has a big history with other platforms.

Phil isn't mad. For some reason Bungie is still multiplatform under Sony. Not sure why?

LOL. The people on Twitter who think Sony just bought the rights to Halo. I've never seen so many Sony die hards get excited about Halo!

I like to know when I said otherwise in my posts....
You doubting sony budget for acqusitions in a post where i was talking about M having more money felt self-explanatory to me...

Why even argue if sony has 18 or 180 b if the point was just M having even more money because you know...they are the far richer company...

Destiny isn't relevant?

Bungie left Microsoft because the wanted to be independent... now they sellout to Sony. Apparently they didn't like being independent. LOL

Bungie is another studio "founded" by Sony.

Yeah no doubt they are playing chess.
Sony are a very proud company they even fucked off Nintendo and made there own console (ps1) after planning to release a cd-rom Snes.
Also the folks at playstation are very proud and competitive, they want to win.

This is a very good acquisition by Sony. Bungie is one of the top-tier FPS developer in the world and they have a track-record in being able to create universes with lore that consumers fall in love with. This also fills a void in Sony's line-up that was severely lacking and would have been disastrous once COD leaves PlayStation behind in a few years. Will Sony's big exclusive be Destiny 3 or a brand new IP however? This is the big question.

Would've never thought Sony would go after Bungie. As the only notable IP that Bungie owns is Destiny.

Capcom would've provided a lot more market diversity as well as IP value. But now it's clear that Sony knows its weaknesses and prefers being an all rounder instead.

Definitely not a bad get and it's safe to assume that Bungie now has at least 1 new big IP in development on the level of Destiny if not higher.

Generally excited bout this acquisition and for sure an amazing counter to the Activision Blizzard deal.

Currently 46k players on Destiny 2 on Steam alone.

The boner for Sony to buy Capcom on GAF when they don't have a single game in their catalogue that fills a hole for Sony. Pretty funny.

Jim Ryan said this is their opportunity to expand beyond the console, so I don't think Playstation exclusives are in the cards.

Yep, PS exclusive, but it guarantees Sony has now shifted to day and day for PC and PS consoles going forward. No way Bungie is launching a game that isn't on both console and PC simultaneously. So it means no more Xbox most likely, but it means Playstation and PC. Unless Sony is allowing Bungie to publish games onto Xbox themselves at their own expense.

$3.6 billion for Bungie is great bang for your buck compared to $70 billion for Activision, but compared to some of the alternatives ($4-5 billion for Capcom for instance) it is a bit pricy

This dick measuring is pointless. MS has always been a far richer company than Sony ever since they released the first xbox. It hasn't mattered all that much when it comes to who's been objectively winning for 20 years.

I wouldn't say Destiny is irrelevant. Long in the tooth, yes, but as far I know a loooot people still play it.

That said I agree that buying Square or Sega would have been more interesting

And I tell you such companies change their planes to react to the counterparts strategies. I never argued for a second Sony has the same financial situation of MS. Where do you read it in my post.

Under Sony, based on published information, they are still going to be able to act independently.

This is almost the same price as Konami, Capcom, SE and SEGA, WTF Sony are doing bro holy shit

WHY BUNGIE, just WHY FFS, SMH

every company isnt eager to sell. 3.6 for bungie means they offered them more than they could refuse. The others you listed probably closer to 7-10 billion in a sellers market.

Again with the goalpost moving...who the hell was even talking about being more succesful??

Do you see any other xbox one in my home other than the one i use as a door blocker because the switch is too light and flat? it's right there close to my shiny day one ps5.

Basically, what Konami has left is it's IP, specifically, It's good, valuable IP, but no dev will want to buy a company with no talent left to make the games; it'd be cheaper to just rent the IP license if you really want to work with it..

I have the same opinion on this as I do about Activision's acquisition, it's all shitty. What a dismal outlook for this industry if this is how it continues to go.
