They didn't give him the engine,he used it for Death Stranding. Death Stranding is owned by Sony,think of it as them just calling in Kojima Productions to make a game with their tools. They even ended up adding in upgrades to it.

Death Stranding is a fantastic game, but it isn't for everyone. If you don't like it, wait until you go to Chapter 3 and until the second map unlocks. Spend some time there, and drop if you don't like it there.I find all this Komijapretty hilarious.
I haven't played a single game of his so I don't understand it. Although, I am looking forward to playing Death Stranding after 23rd June - not because it's by him but because it looks intriguing.

Decima was used exclusively for Killzone FPS gameplay until it was revamped entirely for Horizon Zero Dawn. Meanwhile, id Tech gets overhauled every 2 or 3 years and has already been used in an open world capacity when it was used for Rage back in 2011.

ID Tech is an engine for fast fps action, but it's not the graphically advanced engine in the industry. I personally never really liked it in Doom, but somehow it looks better in Wolfenstein.

It's kind of silly, but he's certainly the kind of game director where you can immediately feel that its a KOJIMA TM game. For better and worse. I think that's why he has the cult status he has (aside from simply being the creator of MGS).
Good luck with Death Stranding, I think its an amazing game that's very uniquely AAA.

Yeah, as a primarily PlayStation gamer, I am absolutely not upset by this at all, because:
- Kojima is an independent developer. He can partner with whomever he wants to. What's the point of being independent otherwise.
- PS partners always come home because they will never get the same technical support system elsewhere. Look at Insomniac and Bluepoint.
- More importantly, I'd be upset if Kojima was making his main AAA game with someone else and not working with PlayStation at all (upset because that'd mean 1 less game for me on my PS). But that is not the case. His main big AAA game is still with PlayStation which he will finish first. He can do experiments with whoever he wants to. A cloud game (lol) is no loss for anyone.
