Every day I fantasize about throwing all of my shit away and being homeless

It sounds like you're really stuck in your situation that you would fantasize about going to that extreme. I'm sorry you're feeling so stuck, but you can choose to have more productive dreams too! Instead of dreaming about lying in the gutter, think about what it would be like to be single again and working in a less stressful job. You have the power my friend.
 
I read an article like 5 to 10 years ago, I think it was in Wired for some reason. Dude just said fuck it and walked away from it all and made a little shanty shack in the middle of the woods. He survived by breaking into nearby homes/cabins and stealing food. I guess he forgot to steal a toothbrush and toothpaste, because at some point his health, in particular teeth, got so bad he let himself get caught. If there was anything impressive about the story, it was his ability to stay hidden in the woods in spite of several attempts to track him down.

I think a lot of homeless people just do not want to deal with the BS required to own a home, have a job, and all the responsibility. One thing I took away from playing Red Dead Redemption 2 was, there was a time when you could live off the land, do some hunting and trade furs for basic supplies and could live on your own schedule and be your own boss. Really hard to do that these days. Essentially being homeless is the closest thing.
 
If you ever fall off the Sears Tower, just go real limp, because maybe you'll look like a dummy and people will try to catch you because, hey, free dummy.

I actually thought this thread was going to be about downsizing one's footprint and be far less depressing. I've actually thought about giving away my house once paid off and trying to live in a tiny home or RV. Funnily enough someone posted an off grid cabin video I've watched recently. But since this thread is about loathing, Jack Handey it is.

If you ever teach a yodeling class, probably the hardest thing is to keep the students from just trying to yodel right off. You see, we build to that.

Grab a piece of paper and write down everything in your life that's a problem. Make sure you capture all of the details, and not just "Wife".

That's your checklist to happiness.

Work on it and remember each one you cross off is one step closer.
 
My uncle (my grandfother Brother) did this, he left the test of the family and went to live on the streets, he died at 76 in the Train station in Rome. He had a lot of Money never used in a bank and The last time we spoke with him he said that he waa really happy and that if he could go back in time he'd do it egain but younger.

I would never do it, but he was looking genuinely happy.

Although I could never live like a homeless person, I due strive for the minimalist lifestyle and find myself happier for doing so. I'd love to find a small studio or tiny home to rent, fill it up with the minimum/bare necessities and spend my money on traveling and experiences. For me possessions are stressful.

Did both of these things almost 10 years to the day now except the office politics were even worse because my ex-wife and I worked for the same company.

In the midst of it, it was damm tough to see the forest for the trees but it's there all the same.

The anger and resentment from those times now has been replaced by something best described as gratitude. That pivot point changed my life forever.

OP is already at a state of thinking of drastic life changes. Would never tell you to go homeless or any of that shit but the mere fact you're on this wavelength suggests you are ready for fundamental change...even a change that still leads to having a roof over your head.

Every day I drive by my local homeless encampment and am grateful I've managed to keep myself afloat.

I also spent $300 on Splatoon plush toys the other day.
 
May be best to just set a goal money wise then go backpacking, I spent 3 months in South Africa living on 20-25USD a day. Half of that was the bed in the hostels.

Had similar thing before I went, felt pretty crap.

I think everyone has moments like this throughout their lives.. Make a radical change to life circumstances and ponder the what if's. Its what we do with these thoughts and inclinations that kind of determine who we are.

Not advocating following through or anything. That is up to each individual person based on their circumstances, just wanted to point out its absolutely normal.
 
Just leave your job and divorce from your wife if dying on the street is something so liberating to you.

You must be pretty unhappy to have these thoughts.

Maybe go living in a farm or a little house in the woods, you strike me as a man tired of everyday life and chaos.
 
I thought that exact thing. Thus I bought a gym membership and dumbbells, worked out for a year and a half, greatly improved my self esteem and self worth, saved money, and got divorced.

It's ethically and morally wrong to do what I did but when you are literally faced with your own happiness vs doing what is "right" but living in hell for the rest of your life what do you choose?

Is there a god to punish you in the afterlife? Is that why you are living this misery and doing the right thing?? I decided that there wasn't.

It was rough at first, but now 10 years later I'm remarried to a woman who shares my hobbies/interests and life is great.

My parents-in-law are farmers and I do not wish being a farmer on my worst enemy: you have no idea how fucking hard and excruciating that job is. So let's stop with being romantic about 'living off the land' - it sucked, it sucks, and it will continue to suck.

Most homeless people are nothing like 'not wanting to deal with it' - they are on the streets because of bad habits and most likely substance abuses and addictions.

There was a dude here who had issues, was in newspapers.

Inherited a lot of property but chose to live on the streets with nothing. He wanted none of it.

He refused help and eventually died, homeless, although he had houses. It can happen.

Apparently people did try to help but he rebuffed them continuously, rich family. Heartbreaking shit.

I fantasize about leaving a baked good outside during precipitation and being distraught I will not have the ingredient list and instructions on how to bake it.

Farming is terrible. Nothing like romanticizing peasant farming where serfs lived to 45-50 years old because of the backbreaking labor lol.
Long term homeless (i.e. longer than 1 year homeless) is like 95% mental illness mixed with substance/sexual/physical abuse.
Short term homeless is majority economic but personal action & safety nets get these people off the streets (although not always permanently).

I get OP life sucks sometimes and working on it is worthwhile but don't glamorize homelessness.
 
Being homeless sounds unenjoyable. Have you ever even been locked outside your house for like an hour? I have. That was the longest hour.

I think we've all felt this way at one time or another, even just for a few moments. As in "What if I just got in a really bad car accident? At least then I wouldn't have to go to work", etc.

I will say this though - if these are persistent thoughts, I strongly recommend you talk to someone. Not because there's anything wrong with you for feeling this way - but just that sometimes having someone listen to you, who's not directly connected to your situation, can really help. You don't have anything to lose by doing it, and it could really help you feel better.

I missed the part where there was farming in Red Dead Redemption 2. When I played RDR2, you and your crew lived in small camps. No rent.
 
No need to immediately become homeless guy. Why not have a little trial run first. Test it out. See if ya like it? It's pretty easy. Just pack a bag. Head to another city/state and start walking. After a few days you'll either want to keep going or you'll be running back home.
 
You could join Second Life and live out your fantasy. Don't do it and ruin your real life. Maybe a simulation is better than doing it in real life. See what you get out of it.

whatever hardships you're facing, dealing with them is easier than the alternative - you're fantasizing with the easy way out, and I can relate, but guarantee you would miss the things you hate, because you'd remember the good things instead of the bad ones

While this is good advice sometimes a situation can feel so bleak there appears to be no way out.

We live in a shitty world that revolves around money and status. Wish everyone had the same so we would see people as people. Not what they're worth or have to offer.

Look into living out of a vehicle instead of the streets. Good luck man. I know it's hard out here.
