Sony tried to kill Xbox, but Microsoft simply decided to finance Xbox more and Sony realized that Microsoft was not going anywhere and now was backing Xbox for real. Sony was close and even Satya questioned Phil at one point regarding why were they in gaming. Sony clearly tried to kill Xbox but they failed in 2014, despite being close. They decided to do that at the next gen launch.
By the 2020
* Sony had deals with every big third party IP - GTA, FIFA, NBA, COD, FF14
* Sony had various moneyhats with third parties that they have announced early on - Deathlop, Ghostwire, Forspoken, FF16, KOTOR. They were even trying to get Starfield.
* Sony expected a very good launch lineup and the first years - Spider-man, Returnal, R&C, GT7, Forspoken, FF16, Horizon, GoWR
But they could not predict COVID, they could not predict Microsoft spending big money on acquisitions.
* So all the games failed to be delivered on time (games like Forspoken, GoWR, GT7, Horizon were delayed)
* They failed to sold tons of consoles fast due to shortage
* Microsoft's decision to provide a cheaper console paid off
* Microsoft's acquisitions changed the market dynamics and so on
