Discovery is a massive PITA. And yes, I'm speaking from experience. Incredibly stressful, as every line of everything you ever did is picked over and taken out of context to make you look bad.
I can't see how Sony will be able to limit it, given the thrust of their objections. Both sides will be hoping this is settled without going to court.

That's pretty clear that they are looking for how it is produced and not what they're producing. Now, I don't see a link to the actual subpoena with details of what they were asking for but it sounded like SIE pointed out that they delivered it to the wrong person and therefore just need more time to respond to it. It didn't sound like they were actually challenging it but just saying that the timeframe was impacted by the clerical error (wrong recipient).

Sony had a lot to say to regulators so they should be more than happy to show how MS owning Activision keeps them from being able to compete. I'd imagine they should be excited to share.

What is Microsoft's angle in this? Make trouble for Sony so they back off? Trying to show that Activision being bought doesn't impact the nuts-and-bolts process of Sony's game development (even though the argument is about market share--not production process)?

This was to be expected. Sony has made certain claims that now need to be backed up with due process. As a key voice in the move to block the acquisition, they at some point were going to have to speak their reasonings in court. No surprise here.
I imagine MS is fishing for any confidential conversations between Sony and other publishers that hint at systematic maneuvering and agreements that inhibit MS ability to sign third party deals, or moves that Sony has made that can be perceived as Sony using their marketplace position to strong arm studios into not playing fair with MS. Who knows what they will find or if they will find anything at all.
Another thought, maybe MS would try to show that Sony has the ability to indeed create a competing product to Call of Duty, but imply that because of an under the table agreement between Sony and Activision, Sony stays out of the Call of Duty space. This of course is just conjecture, but IIRC Sony hasn't developed any competing multiplayer first person shooter games since they signed the marketing agreement in 2014 with Activision for Destiny followed by CoD.
In all likelihood, nothing will come of this and this is just a case of MS lawyers posturing. I can't imagine Sony will be compelled by the courts to release any proprietary information.

Wouldn't that kinda work against them too if they are asked to share the same details? I mean, they have 23 studios, they must be doing something too. Hell, even Aaron said last year they had a lot in the works that hasn't been announced so I dunno, it just seems weird.

If you want the Government to intervene on your behalf because you claim it'll be harmful for your business based on your current practices if they don't, you have to know that at some point you're going to need to prove that claim. Sony will need to show how Microsoft buying Activision allows Microsoft to foreclose on them. The FTC running with Sony's claims means Microsoft really has no choice but to get Sony to explain those claims, because the FTC clearly can't. Sony will need to explain how all of its developers, studios, games, and revenue streams are pointless garbage compared to Call of Duty. It's not that hard Phil. Just dont layoff developers the year they are supposed to ship a game.
That said, I'm all for this. Jimbo is running his PS division like the Manhattan project. As if just revealing the existence of some games is some kind of top secret thats going to jeopardize national security. If they have to reveal what they are working on in a filing then at least we will know what these studios have been working on for the past 3-5 years.

I don't see why Sony should accept Microsofts subpoena to show all the games they have in development. Seems like Microsoft is trying to show the FTC that they have very few games, while Sony has a lot of 3rd party games.

Its just you. They basically want them to show the courts exactly what/how many releases they have coming up and why the acquisition could hurt them as much as they claim when they have so many of their own games coming out.

There is a stat out there that shows how CoD is literally played by 55% of console players. It was from some market research firm. Sony should have hard data backing this up. With Warzone now being F2P, the percentage is probably even higher.
For example, GTAV which has sold over 150 million units is second with 45% among all console players. CoD sells 20-30 million a year and is played by more people. Go do the math. It is going to completely devastate Sony's Playstation business which relies heavily on 45 million PS+ subs that are primarily driven by yearly CoD and the 30% of digital sales cut which would take a massive hit even if half the console's CoD userbase decides to jump ship. Enough to turn Sony into a third party publisher or a smaller much less ambitious first party manufacturer like Nintendo who simply couldnt compete with the big boys and left the console market altogether. Or the handheld market. Pick whatever. They basically had to condense their handheld and console business into one to remain competitive. Sony will have to downscale to account for 50% less revenue.

The Lawsuit is frivolous. I'm not aware of a law which compels any entity to give their direct rival a tour of their IP, accounts, and production schedule. That looks like desperation and I'll be surprised if MS gets any relevant info out of Sony.
