Unredacted reaction to PS5's reveal, "We have a better product than Sony does" - Phil Spencer 30% GPU advantage

Satya doesn't give a flying fuck 😂
Lol....this can't be real.

Am I understanding correctly that phil thinks he assessed the performance from a 1 hour talk?

It sounds exactly like any fanboy jackass. Even I understood the talk better than he did. It took me a week to understand the inverted power scheme but I got it. Because I... y'know ...thought about it for a while.

reads like any xbox gamer chatter back in the reveal days.

Phil still has a chance to show his Xbox SX full power, but the window is closing with ps5pro coming.

Give us that 30% gap!

I doubt you will ever see the full power of Series X realized. Best you can hope for are Series S games with extra pixels, better draw distance, more stable FPS, etc. Same thing will happen with PS5 pro to be fair. Best we can hope for are PS5 games with extra pixels, better draw distance, more stable FPS, etc. These companies cannot abandon their base models when designing games, regardless of whether the pro models launch same time or years later.

Phil Spencer's emails read like they're all sourced from Colt Eastwood.

"We've got a 30% power advantage."

But he's fully aware that every game released has to run on anaemic hardware aka the series S. Which in reality means, thus far, XBOX is yet to build a game that harnesses and showcases that power advantage. In fact, 99% of comparisons show the competition running games with greater visual fidelity and a smoother experience. A 30% advantage yet, you're repeatedly sending developers to get games to even run on your platform.

They gimped and anchored their platform to past gen performance. Their competition is literally running laps around them in terms of mindshare and momentum. 30% is meaningless if 75% of your instal is ineligible.

Phil Spencer needs an intervention. ASAP.

Whats sad here is no company will ever trust using email to communicate ever again.

That and the number of posters (and i use that term lightly, since many are reeally just trolling) in this thread trolling who've never owned an xbox but are industry experts who are smarter than everyone is staggering.

As to what Phil said, it's not that shocking that he thought they had the better hardware, it didn't seem at that point that the ps5 would keep up.

Of course anyone with any sort of reasonable response will just get trolled with more "witty" anti xbox gifs.
That's a pretty pathetic comment to defend the indefensible.

The issue isn't email, where most first world countries have freedom of information requests anyway. The issue is the lack of foresight and arrogance needed to put your demented plans on paper like that.

There isn't a 30% or (only slightly less delusionary) 18% "power advantage" to begin with, regardless of XSS' existence.

Numbers don't lie, we saw the 4k v 1800p launch with the likes of Hitman 3 and now we're getting RT in gameplay with Forza which the same people couldn't believe would happen. It just took time but he was right, expect more from the big first party games after Forza.

Lmao RT in Forza oh man oh man

Because… other studios don't have RT running at 60 FPS, no sir. Always trying to act like arriving late to the party is fashionable.
i think hes talking about GT7. PD was never able to get RT reflections during gameplay.

I just realized why Phil has the job he has for so long at Microsoft. He's S tier when it comes to gaslighting the rest of the company leadership.
And he keeps getting away with it because non of them knows shit about gaming :messenger_tears_of_joy:
That's a pretty impressive grift, have to be honest (y)

im wondering how he handles actual result meetings, must be stressing as fuck explaining "ending up worse than xbone gen, while burning thousand times more cash"
and their whole idea of a solution being flushing even more money down the drain.
guy probably looks like having aged 20 years in the last 5 for a reason

I'm trying to empathize with Phil's position in March of 2020...with console launch 8 months away. He's talking to the CEO of Microsoft. Trying to butter Satya up.

Does Microsoft have a better product, on paper, just looking at hardware alone. Maybe. The teraflop debate was in full swing around that time and most people were firmly in the camp that Microsoft had the most powerful console with the best features. I still feel that Microsoft has the better features of the two consoles.

That being said, I have no fucking clue where he gets the software advantage from. I know he can't be talking about the games. The Series X launched with 0 exclusives. If he's talking about things like Variable Rate Shading and the other "tools"....I mean...maybe?

Comes off kinda desperate.

As someone who spends a lot of time writing executive memorandums and crafting e-mails to C-Suite, yeah, I can tell you this isn't surprising.

I've always admonished people about the argument from authority logical fallacy.

There are people on gaming forums who know WAY more than the average gaming executive and in many cases many of the inline staff when it comes to the history of the gaming industry, strategy, and historic sales.

Just like you can have hobbyists put together emulators that are better than platform holders (given largely time).

Phil Spencer graduated with a BS in Technical and Scientific Communications. You might as well call that bachelors of science a bullshit artist. You look at his career and there is no reason he should actually be CEO other than the fact that he outlasted everyone else.

He was a general manager in the early days of MGS. Then he became General Manager of all of Xbox Europe... Can you name me the high level of success that Phil Spencer had in Europe? He very quickly rose through the ranks to eventually become head of Xbox. You compare his resume with Jim Ryan's and it is a joke.

Waaaait a second.

You're telling me Sony is being run by the guy who made/contributed to europe being a massive, smashing success for playstation and Microsoft is being run by the guy who couldn't get europeans to buy their machine even at 50% discounts?

Probably in that Discord they had.
The same one which knew about the impending Oberon Github leaks that were coming before the leaks were published, a MS owned Github. The same Discord that certain MS execs were also a part of. Not hard to parse the pre-launch/announcement FUD campaign back then.

Almost karmic, this.

The only thing Phil has on Jim is PR skills. And it works. The amount of people that fall for the "good guy phil" persona is incredible to see even in here.

Remember that pathetic interview when Red Fall released?
Does it work though?

Does the average gamer listen to PR?

How does that impact the bottom line?

The craziest thing is that Phil somehow keeps persuading the board of directors to fund his insane M&As. Bethesda was too much, but the fact they green lighted Acti is crazy.

They greenlit Activision before Bethesda was a failure. That have a lot of cash at the moment and the promise of Netflix type revenue for the future was appealing.

If you look at what Spencer says in the mail, it's basically the FUD that was spread at that time.

He also mentioned discussing it with DF and iirc Alex was part of that discord.
Then DF spread the FUD as well.

It's basically a no-brainer and quite a messy situation for MS. Lol

Maybe Jimbo is not a likable public character, but as an executive the is among the best in the industry. Hell, he even somehow slavaged PS3 in Europe. And he's pretty upfront with unpopular things and not trying ot play a good gamer guy.
